Not Dumb at all. You need to contact the DMV in the state you live in. Most all seem to have different rules/regs. Good Luck

THIS

How is your Volvo 780 registered? If it's registered as an RV, Truck Home or something OTHER than a commercial vehicle, I would doubt that a CDL would be REQUIRED. There are drawbacks to having a CDL. BEFORE you get a CDL (and especially a "CDL-A") be sure you FULLY understand what you're signing up for.

When I lived in NY anyone could buy a printed copy of the NYS Vehicle & Traffic Laws at any DMV office for $1.00 + sales tax!. My agency got copies of "last year's" book which they handed out to LEOs (for $1.07, I'd buy my own NEW copy when they were available). Maybe your state has a similar deal?

Not to judge anyones opinion, but we each have to become educated with what our personal situation is and how it applies to what we are doing and then decide to address it so that when WE are asked questions about how we came to have the type of license, classification etc. we know the answers, not "well this guy told me that I didnt need it".  The ticket or other accountability will have our name on it, so know what you know and then decide how you will choose.

Corey, I've had my CDL since its inception. Nevada does not require a CDL. Having one will only expose you to additional scrutiny, expense and regulation, for what benefit exactly? I can't imagine any scenario where the CDL has any value for you, unless you plan to put it to good use. Jay

Yes.

CDL is federal, not state. It applies to "COMMERCIAL" use.

Some states, may require an "air brake" endorsement or other endorsements, but not all states.

On this site...Justdownsize, (that is an https site) it says Nevada requires a "special license for vehicle over 26k/lbs. But not a CDL.

I'm a work'n on it.

I’m not sure why everyone is talking about commercial licenses.  Cory (Vegas Teacher) asked if he needed a NON-Commercial Class A license.  Nevada, like California, Texas and some other states, requires a NON-Commercial Class A license when towing heavy combinations.

Tahoe Shark is also a Nevada resident and had to get a Non-Commercial Class A to tow his heavy 5er with his HDT.  I don’t have Nevada’s specific code section to reference, but I know from conversations with Tahoe Shark (who did the research) that you can’t legally tow a heavy 5er with an HDT (or any tow vehicle) without the higher level of license.

The HH RV Resource Guide,  https://www.hhrvresource.com/node/44.html was created to stop all the wife's tales about commercial, non-commercial, and other driver's licenses.  It has copies of the state codes that define the need for licensing.

Your state of residence, which also be the state of your driver's license, determines what you need to drive your rig.

Of course that's true and very helpful. Corey likes to ask a lot of questions and many like to respond and be helpful. Jay

Well, I blew that.. I was sure Corey was asking about a CDL yet again, but apparently I misread it. I seem to be doing that more as I "mature". Jay

No problem Jay, I am a high school teacher and I am used to kids not reading instructions. No harm, no foul you get used to it after 25 years of teaching.

Chad,

Thanks, I was wondering the same thing as I read through the responses. Then again I teach high school students and I am used to kids not reading instructions.

What ever happened with your wreck, you can private message me if instead of putting it on the forum.

Everything worked out.  The old trailer got totaled by the insurance company.  I was thankful for that because I didn’t want it back after the damage it received.  We lucked into a brand new DRV Full House toy hauler.  It was the model I was trying to convince my wife to buy and was custom ordered to almost the exact same specs I would have ordered it with (it actually had a couple of things I wouldn’t have thought to add).  The people it was ordered for ended up not being ready to take it, so we stepped in.  The timing couldn’t have been any better, so all is good again.

The HDT survived with only some minor cosmetic damage, so that was lucky as well.  We have been traveling a lot since the incident and I am leaving again in the morning to head to a Rolling Retreats to do some work and get some work done.  It has been a very busy year.
