I lost a pinyon seal on the differential which made a horrible mess. I have gear oil all over the front of and cap of the Mobile Suites. Wife is not thrilled with the look to say the least. It's available at Dollar General, and I believe that I've seen it once or twice at Walmart. I've never known it to damage any finish that I've used it on. Most people will use Dawn to remove the wax. A new coat of wax can never hurt. Get some cold beverages. I use a clean cotton wash rag like an old towel and immediately after soap and rinse. The high sulfur content in gear oil WILL stain painted surfaces quickly.
