  1. You'll find those signs mostly in the Eastern part of the country. Tunnels there usually go under harbors and the like, so their ends are higher than the middle. Escaping propane, being heavier than air, will congregate at the low point creating a hazard. In the west, tunnels tend to go through mountains, not under harbors. Mountain tunnels have at least one end lower than the middle for drainage. You don't see as many "turn off propane" signs because any leakage will naturally drain out the end of the tunnel and dissipate.
  2. Be sure to include an appropriately sized fuse or circuit breaker where the second feed comes into the RV. Yes, it will be protected by the pedestal's breaker if you plug it into a 15 or 20 amp outlet. But it won't be if someone uses an adapter to plug into a 30 or 50 amp feed.
  3. Actually, federal law says all of the cell phone carriers have to pass through calls to 911 and other emergency numbers whether or not the calling phone is currently activated. I have an old deactivated phone in my glove box that was on a different carrier than my primary phone for just that reason, in case I need to call 911 and my primary phone is damaged or I'm in in an area where it's carrier doesn't have coverage.
  4. When did you start staying at Escapees CARE?
  5. That topic, if I remember correctly, was a new user promoting Atthotspot.com, a rather questionable web site offfering "unlimited" data on the AT&T network. What made me question it was the site had no direct contact info and no physical address, just a text number and Facebook/Twitter for support. He also faked a low SKP number and said he was a Life Member. I reported it and both of his similar threads were removed. He did the same thing over at RVForum.net with the same results. The Mobley offer this past winter was to clear out AT&T's final inventory of Mobleys. It's history. The Connected Car Unlimited plan is still available, but you need a car with a built-in Onstar type hotspot to use it. Or you can buy the Mobley's replacement, the Harmon Spark. But unlike the Mobley the Spark confirms it's actually plugged into a car, and shuts off 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off or after 30 minutes if the car stays in one place with the motor running. This makes it unsuitable as a Mobley replacement.
  6. One more thing ... do you have two air conditioners? If so, it's best to have one on each side of the 50 amp service to balance the load when they're on. If they're both on one leg, it will work in theory but this increases the current on both that hot lead and on the neutral. The fix is to open the breaker box and move the second AC's circuit breaker to the other side. If you have a whole house inverter, sometimes installers save a buck by using one side of the circuit breaker panel for the circuits powered by the inverter instead of installing a subpanel for the inverter. This means all of the large loads have to be moved to the other side of the panel, putting them all on a single leg. If this is the case, you'll have to install a subpanel on the output of the inverter and move the inverter circuits there. This will free up both sides of the main panel so you can balance the large loads between both legs.
  7. That's correct. The reason is the voltage delivered by the controller is the ratio of the resistance between the controller and the load. With a load connected you'll see a full range of voltage on the blue wire as you advance the controller's knob. Without a load, there's nothing for the controller to work against so you'll only see two voltages, on (12 volts) or off (0 volts).
  8. You need a load on the blue wire to accurately measure what voltage the controller is putting out to the trailer.
  9. WD-40 sprayed into the air intake works as a starting fluid but is much gentler on the engine. At least that's what I observed when the glow plugs went out on my VW diesel.
  10. Right. But keeping the old frame preserves the original VIN number. A new cab and hood is just body work and accomplishes pretty much the same thing, updating the truck with all of the new bells and whistles.
  11. So keep the old frame and install a new cab and hood on it. Maybe replace the front end steering components while you're at it. Not a glider, just a body upgrade with a tight rattlefree cab and all of the new bells and whistles.
  12. This is a gas motorhome, right? If so, and the generator is also gasoline powered, then all the suggestions about glow plugs, water pumps, fan belts, etc. don't apply - these are for a diesel generator. Vapor locking from reformulated gas in the unpressurized fuel line, or the rubber portion of the fuel line collapsing are the most likely culprits.
  13. Usually there's just a seperate suction tube going 3/4 of the way into the tank that feeds the generator. Engine mounted fuel pumps worked fine sucking gas out of the tank for many decades ... it's only been with the advent of reformulated fuel that automakers felt the need to put a pump in the tank to pressurize and raise the boiling point of the fuel in the lines. I'll bet the same thing is happening with the Onan generator. It has a fuel pump mounted on the generator that sucks gas out of the tank. Since the generator's fuel line isn't pressurized, it's boiling and creating a vapor lock when the underside of the RV gets hot. When you stop the engine, you stop the air from the engine's fan from circulating air under the RV. Pavement heat percolates upward and vapor locks the generator's fuel line. You might try adding a pump adjacent to the fuel tank and eliminating the one on the generator to pressurize the fuel line between the tank and generator, thus raising the boiling point of fuel in that line.
  14. I use a Beheringer USB audio interface, essentially the same as a USB speaker without the amp and speaker. It takes the place of the computer's internal soundcard and provides more audio definition as well as stereo audio recording capability (which is why I originally bought it). It would be a good choice if you're happy with your existing speakers.
  15. "Semi" is actually a fairly common name for the tractor that pulls a semi-trailer. Short for "semi-trailer truck".
  16. Easy way is to add 1/4 cup bleach to enough water to fill the hose. Raise one end and pour the mixture into the other until the hose is full. Join the ends so the hose is sealed into a loop and let it sit for an hour. Maybe shake the loop a couple of times to ensure the bleach mixture splashes into any air pockets. How to tell how much water you need? Fill the hose, then empty it into a bucket.
  17. I believe Joe Peterson was the first to use that phrase. Part of the KOA overhead that doesn't apply to other campground owners is KOA franchisees pay KOA Inc. a $30k franchise fee up front, then $1500 a year plus 10% of their ongoing registration fees (site fees), placing them at a competitive disadvantage to others who keep 100% of their generated revenue. Although I have no way of knowing, I suspect the "site registration" percentage in the past may have only applied to the basic site rate, encouraging the franchisees to price things like electric-water-sewer, pool passes, etc. separately so they were exempt from the KOA percentage. And thus justifying the "Keep On Adding" branding when customers found themselves nickeled and dimed over stuff that they assumed should have been included in the site rent. https://ownakoa.com/build-a-koa/requirements/
  18. How about using an electric linear actuator instead? Run some wiring down to a switch and it will raise and lower the panels without needing assistance from a pole. If you wire it so the motor leads are shorted while it is stopped it will have dynamic braking to hold the panels in position. Here's one example found with a quick Google search. This has a shorter stroke but more lifting capacity than the gas lift so it's just a matter of changing the geometry of the mounting points to get the proper lift on the panels. Reasonable price, too. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Heavy-Duty-Linear-Actuator-6-Inch-Stroke-12-Volt-DC-225-Pound-Max-Lift/408252473?
  19. Good article, except for a missing hyphen. "The Escapees have “Coop Parks” that are owned by the people who stay there." The word should "Co-op", from their co-operative ownership structure. Not "Coop" as in a chicken coop.
  20. That's called "ear horsepower". Loud engines always go faster than quiet engines. Ask any Harley rider.
  21. A starting draw of 1500 amps for 12 seconds is the same as charging at 30 amps for 600 seconds (10 minutes). 😉
  22. How about a 10 year old 1.6L Nissan Sentra? At one of our transmitter sites a Class 8 winch truck was stuck after the driver left the headlights on over a long weekend. Amid much derision I jumpered the Sentra's battery to the big rig's 8Ds, ran the engine at a fast idle for 10 minutes and the truck started right up. The Nissan's alternator did get a bit aromatic but it worked fine until I sold the car 8 years and 160,000 miles later. 12 volts is 12 volts.
  23. x2 on the Brave browser. I downloaded the Windows version from their website (https://brave.com) and it works as claimed. ALL and I mean ALL of the annoying third-party ads disappeared, leaving nice clean web pages that loaded faster since you only download the page itself, not the third party ads. Even embedded ads in YouTube videos went away. If you keep the stock Home Page, at startup and every time you open a new tab you get a running tally showing the number of trackers and ads it's blocked. Since getting Brave yesterday my total is 88 blocked trackers, 2,122 blocked ads and 3 blocked HTTPS upgrade attempts. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, I will continue using Chrome for my sensitive information like online banking and payments. It already has that information so it's not as big of a risk to keep those activities there instead of sharing them with Yet Another Entity. I do have some questions about their Rewards program where you view "non-offensive" ads to generate credits you can send to websites to compensate for the revenue they have lost from your blocked ads. At least for now this is an optional program so I'm going to wait a while and see what others think before signing up.
