Stan Wright
My truck only came with one key. Do I have to go to Volvo for spares? It's a 2004.

Yarome
I don't know a thing about Volvo keys.. they might be special.. but if it's just a standard electronic key you might shop around. Just a few months ago I told one of my sons that he would have to go to the dealer to get a second key and he informed me, "No Da (insert youthful sarcasm here), I went to walmart and they had a machine that would read an existing keys chip and program a new one for about 1/3 of what the dealership wanted." Dunno if that helps, but sounded pretty nifty to me.
jeffw
Any key shop should be able to cut a copy. If you want an 'original' key punched from the VIN you'd need to go to volvo. 2007 Volvo 780 Volvo D12D, 465hp, 1650 ft/lbs tq., ultrashift
MrSeas
Found this quote on Truckers Report....don't know if its true or not. Might be worth a try. Stan Wright
Thanks. So far I've had no luck at Lowes, Walmart, or a couple of local locksmiths. Are the Volvo keys chipped? I'm thinking not, but that seems to be a common question asked of me.
hone eagle
Take your VIN to a dealer ,got mine in a couple of days direct from the factory. I was told the key is a 'laser cut' and cheaper to go to a dealer then a locksmith,I was told this by a locksmith - he turned my business away. 2005 volvo 670 freedomline singledNewmar Torrey Pine 34rskswoot woot
Alie&Jim's Carrilite
When I had my Dodge, I used a spare key one day instead of the chipped factory key. 3 starts and it locked out. Had to get towed to the dealer and have a module reset. Don't know about the Volvo, but I'm not going to chance it. Jim's Adventures Old Spacecraft.... Nuke-E
There are two different types of keys for the Volvo trucks. Most of the fleet trucks will have a double-sided key, while others will have an internal cut key (sometimes referred to as laser cut, or sidewinder) like mine. Neither has an RFID chip, so as long as you can get it cut it should work. Going to Volvo isn't very expensive either--I ordered a key for mine (internal cut) based on the VIN for about $15. One word of caution about going to Wal-Mart or similar for duplicate keys--most are using an optical system now, instead of the mechanical key duplicators that have been around forever. They're not as accurate --I'd highly recommend a real locksmith or hardware store. I dealt with a GM key a few months back that just wouldn't turn when copied with that system, and tried multiple times. Locksmith copied it in about 15 seconds for $2 and it worked fine. 45' 2004 Showhauler -- VNL300, ISX, FreedomLine -- RVnerds.com -- where I've started to write about what I'm up to Headlight and Fog Light Upgrades http://deepspacelighting.com
lappir
I had remote key fob locks installed last year. Great addition, just wish they would lock with the truck running. Have to use the "Spare" key to lock when stopping at a rest area for just a short time. Haven't had a chance to check with the installer to see if there is a way to override. RickW
My Ex-US Express truck uses same key for door/ignition. Carl our key may even be the same as that is not too unusual for trucks coming out of the same fleet. My guess for 2 different keys is either a failure or somebody not wanting to use the "Fleet" key for security purposes. As for ordering a key from Volvo. With my vin they had a key the next day for something like $20. If you do not go the Volvo route definitely go to an actual locksmith. I have had mixed results on keys from box type stores. They have always been good about trying again (and again) but can turn in to several trips and lots of time. 2017 Entegra Anthem 44A SOLD - 2004 Volvo 780. 465hp and 10sp Auto Shift (from 2010~2017) SOLD - 2009 Montana 3400RL

I lock my truck with the motor running while unloading my van trailer with a lift gate. Few years ago when I didn't lock my truck. I was unloading my trailer at 3am into a store. While I was keeping a eye on a shady looking guy watching me, his friend jump in my cab and stole all my personal stuff.
Stan Wright
Thanks for all the input and suggestions. We were in Louisville today so we stopped by the Volvo dealership and ordered some spares. All they needed was my VIN. Three spares, sales tax, and shipping to my house...$74.
