Flying Js and other truck stops

We never stay at truck stops - reason.  I have a son and 2 brothers that are truck drivers.  I want them to be able to park for the night and have showers, food, bathrooms, laundry or whatever available to them that they need.  I do not want them parked on the side of the road because they couldn't find a place to park.    They do not have a tow vehicle that would enable them to go get a bite to eat someplace etc.  They MUST stop.  I have time to find a suitable campsite .  As far as Walmart parking - we have done that a few times.  Was never told no and we stayed in small town locations where it was quiet.  Wouldn't want to stay in any of the big cities parking lots.  Usually in a campground - we use Passport America a lot and can stay inexpensively and most times have full-hookups.  If not there, then we look for a Corp of Engineer park and use our senior discount .

We do use FJ/Pilot for fueling and rest stops. They are plentiful and usually Rv  friendly. We also have the RV plus card for fuel savings. Truckers are out there conducting business so we do not interfere with that.

We do not overnight at truck stops , wall mart or any other business  rest area etc, our choice. We are in a CG by 4 or 5PM and we use the facilities in our RV.

In most cases you can thank the CG associations for pushing us out of private parking lots in an effort to force us to do business with them.  Several years ago they launched an effort against Wal-Mart throughout Florida.  They lobbied local governments using an obscure state ordnance which requires that there be a dump station anytime more than four vehicles are parked in a lot.  One Wal-Mart manager told me that his local mayor threatened to throw him in jail.  They managed to wipe out parking at most Wal-Marts all along route 441 which runs the length of the state.  CGs are OK sometimes for extended stays, but when traveling I always considered it a sign of weakness to pay an RV Park to sleep in my own bed.  In fact I only did it once in six years when my generator was out and I couldn't get air conditioning.

Going cross country, we have stayed at Wal-Mart's, rest areas and truck stops. We always sleep in the truck, stay in the truck section and haven't been hassled by anyone so far. It probably helps that we have a KW as a tow vehicle and a large fiver but so far, all we get are the usual questions about our rig.

Thanks for your personal responses. I was just sharing mine! Every reference I mentioned was things that I had observed in my many years of travel. Am I the only one who has seen this "wonderful" RV behavior?

I was pretty annoyed at Flying J last night.  Coming home from the Eclipse, i stopped for diesel fuel.  First there is the usual nonsense about their pumps accepting only professional trucking company cards and not regular credit cards.  I went inside to stand in line and set a credit limit of 200 bucks.  Then twice the pump stopped and directed me to the cashier.  Neither the cashier nor manager could tell me why.  Took way too long just to get fuel.

We put on a lot of miles every season. We drive long days and stop at truck stops, Wal Marts and rest areas. Never seem to have many issues. More questions than anything.

A your question is what???

We've actually had more looks and comments by other RV'er's, then trucker's, as we travel:)!

We will sometimes stop at a Truck Stop - only if we feel we were not taking a space that a Trucker might need. As others have mentioned, this is their lively hood, and new regulations too... We look for stops with lots of open room, and do our best to move out of the truckers. When in doubt, we'll move on.

We've had luck at a few Costco's along out travels, and of course we have found Cabelas's and Walmart's to also often not have town ordinances to restrict overnight parking.

If we need to, we'll keep going and pay someplace for overnight, to avoid taking a space for a Trucker...

Best to all,

Smitty

DuffMan, no flame intended but I expect I may receive some. I agree that we all will do what we deem best, opinions are like BigJim said just opinions. In my book staying at a Walmart or truck stop for anything other than an emergency is something I would not do.

Sometimes we jump to conclusions.  Unless we sit there and watch how do we know they are staying all night?   How do we know they don't have a mechanical issue?  I once had no choice but to spend 2 nights in a truck stop parking area due to mechanical issues and nowhere to get it fixed until Mon. morning.  Luckily this wasn't a large high volume place  and only a few truckers spent more than a few hours napping.    I don't make a habit of truck stops but in a pinch if I get too tired I could be just as dangerous to the driving public as a tired trucker.   I often would stay at a campground enroute if it is readily available and I don't have to drive to timbuktoo to get to it.

Two rigs with slides out and jacks down have been in a local Home Depot parking lot here for three days. One of them moves to a different spot in an adjacent lot every day.  That's the kind of behavior that gets us all kicked out.  The protocol is clear: No slides, no awnings, no jacks on asphalt.  Stay one night and be on your way.  If truck stops didn't want us there, they could post no RV (residence vehicle) parking, but I know of none that do.

I agree that looks really incriminating but I have known of at least a few cases where contractor that are doing work on site or nearby are purposely allowed to stay but normally we would not know that unless we have communications with the store or business.  To some degree what is the difference with say a big casino allowing folks to overnight or spend days there especially for big local events. IE: Sandia casino in Albq. during balloon fest.  And they even have a campground. In general I would like to see the one night rule at most places like Walmart but then you start with the issue of policing it and the liability of that.

Generally a field office for a project is plastered with the advertizing for the contractor.

Since you used the word "generally"  I would agree.    The same kind of judgements apply to the handicap placards and tags and I up front admit I sometimes make those same judgements even though I have been judged the same way on occaision.

PFJ and other truck stops are so busy they have established a reservation system for parking spaces. A driver calls ahead and reserves a parking space for a mandatory rest.
