They stated 'trailer'.... had to be a motorhome.   Do you have the link?

Nope. It was a trailer and several people were riding in it.

A prominent Long Island pediatrician was killed when she tumbled out of a moving Airstream trailer — still clutching the door’s handle — and onto an upstate highway during a family road trip over the weekend, according to state police and kin.

Dr. Monika Woroniecka — a 58-year-old married mom and children’s allergy and immunology specialist with Stony Brook Medicine — was in the 2024 silver trailer with other family members when she fell through the door shortly after 3 p.m. and onto State Route 12E in Watertown in a freak accident, said police and family.

Woroniecka’s husband, Robert, 59, was driving the gray 2019 Ram pickup truck pulling the trailer at the time, according to a press release.

Motorists who witnessed the frightening fatal fall said the passenger-side door of the Airstream flew open, helped by the wind — while the doctor was clutching its handle, police said.

It is sad that there was a fatality but what is really sad is that the doctor's family will probably try to soak Airstream for millions even though she/they were committing an illegal act. Riding in a travel trailer in New York is illegal and quite honestly stupid inasmuch as there is no safety equipment such as seat belts.

It sounds like she opened the door for some reason and the airpattern from the highway speed sucked it open with her hanging on to the door latch. Legal or not, riding in a travel trailer while moving down the highway is foolish and risky, to say nothing of opening the door at highway speeds. Just demonstrates that even doctors sometimes fail to use reasonable care.

No person shall drive a vehicle on a public highway while drawing a house coach trailer occupied by any person and no person shall occupy a house coach trailer while it is being drawn upon a public highway.

That’s a nice way of saying none of them used common sense. Just wondering if that was a first trailer for them. It’s sad but not airstream’s fault.

I know it is not Airstream's fault and you know that it was not Airstream;s fault but I am willing to bet that the family on their own or with the nudging of some lawyer will bring suit. I did notice from the picture above and verifying on the Airstream website that that door is a "suicide" door, at highway speed I doubt the woman could have held the door closed once it opened.

Helena called her mom’s death “pure accident” — although she suggested that the trailer’s design suffered from “a significant safety oversight” because its door opened inward as opposed to outward “against the wind.”

More from the NY Post.

... a very unfortunate accident but the daughter stated:  "Sure, maybe Airstream doesn't advise traveling inside the trailer.  But we thought maybe that the last 20 minutes of an eight-hour drive and slow country roads would be fine."  ..... a bad decision to go against recommendations.

I have a t-shirt that says: "I can fix stupid, but it's gonna hurt."  I may come of as hard hearted, but Darwin was on the job here.

I'd bet dollars to do-nuts that somewhere in the Airstream owners manual it warns against hauling passengers in the trailer.

When you look at the trailer it has what was called a "suicide door", hinged on the aft side.. When it came open the wind over-powered her and pulled her out.

I suspect, since they were en-route to somewhere to watch the eclipse, there were more people than seats in the tow vehicle.

This is a very tragic accident the driver will never forget. In Indiana the driver is responsible for the safety of all passengers.

For instance if the vehicle is pulled over and a passenger is not wearing a seat-belt, the driver is ticketed. Likewise with people riding in a truck-bed, driver is ticketed.

As to Airstream design; when you look at their website, some are hinged on the forward side, some aft. It depends on floorplan and awning arm positioning. The Airstream involved has an awning arm beside the door so close if the door had hinges on the forward side the door would hit the awning arm.

I do suspect a design change in the Airstream future.
