remoandiris
Been calling a few insurance companies to discuss RV hauler insurance and I keep running into the same roadblock...the weight. They are not writing policies for "personal use" on vehicles with a GVW over 10,000 lbs. Since the HDT would not be commercial, can't go that route, either. WTH can I do? Called a few in the HHRG. The one that answered said they are only licensed in Va., but it is the same 10,000 sticking point.
Rick & Alana
Call Bkue Sky, they understand HDT's. One of the top guys took the time to come to the National HDT Rally last year. That spoke volumes to me. That he would travel to speak to 50 potential customers. remoandiris
I currently have Blue Sky on my 5er and am waiting for a call back on the truck. Not sure if they'll add it to my existing policy or not, since they stopped writing policies in Fla. Other problem is when they enter the VIN, it'll come up with a GVWR in the 30K range...that is higher than what they cover. Just got off the phone with RV America. $1100 a yr, and only covers the truck with towing the 5er, not when driving to the supermarket. WOW!! This could very well be another reason there are not many HDTs registered in Fla. Since it is not a motorhome, insurance is a bear.
Docmac61
I had similar problem. Farmers has my insurance on several cars(kids) and several commerical properties, but was a no go on the HDT. My agent finally got Progressive to write it, but it was around $1200/year

Imurphy907
Country Financial wrote me a "commercial" policy. Still quite cheap, it had to be a "commercial" policy due to weight. Only two differences, no glass coverage and no road side assistance. But that was easily fixed by good sams. 2016 Road Warrior 420 2001 Volvo VNL 660 Alaska Based. GeorgiaHybrid
I use state farm on my freightliner that is registered as a private truck. They wanted to write it as commercial but when I told them it was for a RV and to check again, they did write it for personal use. Only saved about $250/year that way but that much will almost buy a 1/2 tank of fuel. 2017 Kenworth T6802015 DRV 38RSSA Elite Suites2016 Smart Prime

Like I said, I have Blue Sky for my 5er. However, they are no longer writing policies in Fla. They are keeping their current Fla customers and they MIGHT allow me to add an HDT. My agent will call me when she gets an answer. Of course, that also depends on how they insure it. BTW, I had a claim 2 yrs ago and Blue Sky was very easy to work with. Florida just seems to be a bear for HDT RV hauler insurance.

Only "real" benefit I have for domiciling in Fla is the homestead exemption. Tomorrow I'm going to figure out how much I save and decide if SD is a better domicile. I can still do the snowbird thing, which is practically what I do now.

mr. cob
Howdy All, My truck, is now registered as a "motor home", I have it and the toy hauler insured by "Blue Sky", my truck is covered whenever I drive it, as a stand alone motor home, when towing the toy hauler or unhitched and going to the grocery store. In the last two years I have had two claims that Blue Sky has dealt with, in both cases Blue Sky came through and paid for the repairs needed, not just patches but FULL REPAIRS to return the truck and the trailer to as good and in my opinion better then new condition. I highly recommend folks giving Blue Sky a serious look if you need or are thinking about changing insurance companies. remoandiris
Don't know if anyone has in Florida. Really if you have an Hdt it would need to be registered in another state. It is really looking that way. Fla seems to be non-HDT friendly from registration only as a "truck tractor" to this insurance mess. Unfortunately if I have to reg in another state (likely SD since Tx has the CDL-A license requirement), all of my vehicles will be reg'd in SD. Meh, decisions, decisions. At least now I have a few more months of breathing room.

Larry&Donna-AK
Here is a reply for my inquiry to Blue Sky:Thank you for contacting us. It sounds like your vehicle is registered in Alaska. We do not have a program for RV or Auto in that state. If the vehicle is registered in another state we may be able to assist you if your tow vehicle does not exceed 26,000 lbs GVW. We currently have restrictions for those with no RV experience (under 2 yrs) and we would need to know the value of the units to consider them in our program. We would have to quote both the Pull vehicle and the 5th wheel together because we do not insure tow vehicles alone unless they meet our RV requirements; sleeping quarters, toilet, shower, plumbing, electric, stove and oven and has been manufactured or professional converted.
