Has anyone driven Hwy 93, from Las Vegas to Twin Falls Idaho with the HDT?

Howdy All,

I am planning the last leg of my homeward journey, I'd like to stop in Las Vegas and visit with Cory.  According to my mapping program the most direct / efficient route home would be to go north on Hwy 93 from Las Vegas Nevada, up to Twin Falls Idaho, where I would then get on I-84, the freeway and head northwest toward home.

I have never been on Hwy 93 in Nevada, looking at the map it looks like many miles of desolate country to cross, so if anyone can offer advice as to the suitability of taking this road during the last week of October with an HDT dragging a large RV trailer I sure would appreciate your advise, thanks.

Great road, assuming you can stay focused on driving.

Howdy Darryl,

Thanks for your reply.  I am "assuming" this road follows the valleys between the mountain ranges, do you remember any passes that may have snow on them in late October?

We went through in early April, and though there was some snow in the ditches, the road was clear and dry. The climbs weren't bad, but the Jake did get to sing a bit.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

Howdy Darryl,

Thanks again, I have chains if needed but would prefer to avoid using them unless its an emergency situation.  Having never been in that part of Nevada on the map it looks like a bad place to have a problem not much out there or along the way.  I enjoy roads that keep your attention, driving through the mountains is an actual joy to me, just want to avoid snow and ice if possible.

Don't have an HDT (38' fiver and dually crew) but we use that route in the spring and fall. It will be you, 18 wheelers, some RVs, and a few cars. Great road. But to save about 40 miles and several pulls, just north of Ash Springs, take RT 375 and RT 318 and not RT 93. Then just follow RT 318 to US 6 outside of Ely. Take US 6 back into RT 93 at McDonalds in Ely. Much quicker and better. Most folks towing thru or to Twin use this route. You will have a little construction at I-15 and RT 95. They are putting in a new bridge on I-15 and adding 4 and 5 lanes past Loves Truck Stop. No big deal!

Howdy Bob,

Thanks for that information, I'll put it to good use.

Have driven this road many time in a car, truck pulling a fiver, a Class A, and even on a Harley. In Oct check the weather reports. Shouldn’t have a problem. Only place I ever hit snow was just south of Ely once in Feb. The border town of Jackpot has many casinos where you can park overnight. One casino even has a camp ground out back, can’t remember its name.

Howdy Twotoes,

Thanks for your post I am feeling better about taking this road after all the positive reports on it.

Good road. Well travelled by truckers. Stops/assistance/repairs are few and far between. Be sure to use Hwy 318, faster/nicer drive (going through by way of Caliente on 93 seems to take forever). This time of year shouldn't have any snow, even on higher elevations(they are not that high).

Railroad museum in Ely has some interesting stuff, if you are into that. Ely in general has some pretty good history to it if you look around.

Fuel and services can be pricey along this route. Blew a drive tire going across once, years ago,  limped in to Alamo to tire shop. Paid Michelin price for Chinese tire, but had no choice, I was loaded and couldn't risk it. Just do a thorough pre-trip and fuel up before leaving Vegas and you will be good.

I wouldn't hesitate to go this way.

It is a very beautiful boring drive, if that makes any sense! It is a terrible place to brake down. Poor cell service even with Verizon, last time I went from Vegas to Elko.

P.S. What is your favorite food and are you a buffet person? We have some good sushi out here too!

Howdy Cory,

A buffet with real meat, I am a carnivore, is OK.  I am NOT safisticated (sp) enough to eat raw fish, can't handle sour cream or yogurt either, I am just a boring meat and potatoes kinda guy gourmet food is wasted on me.

The RV park that twotoes is referring to at Jackpot is Cactus Pete's. Pull-thru sites in front end of park by the parking lot. All 30 amp sites. I believe it is open all year but the water maybe turned off.

Howdy Bob,

Thanks for the additional information.

We drive US-93 at least once per year, either headed south in the fall or going north in the spring.

While we have come across some snow in the spring, there's only once in the fall (early November) that we ran into snow and that was in Ely.  We stayed an extra day and by then the roads were clear.

Did I end up on RV.net? What's with all the quoting?

Howdy Darryl,

I can only speak for myself, I always quote the post I am replying to that way my answer can be seen to relate to what I have just posted.  For me, its sometimes hard to keep up with a written conversation if folks just post something with out a direct reference to what they are saying.  I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer and need all the help I can get to keep up sometimes.

I've been in there a few times in the last couple of weeks.  It was 70 something on Sunday night so its like summer.

Great route home.  Yea that offramp under I15 is a lot of crazy but everybody will move and you'll figure it out.  The Rooster tears that road up!

Scrap, I swear that all KW did was to take a T680, move the leaking clearance lights to a visor and put a squared up hood and radiator on the front, added stacks on the side and called it a W990. The main cab exterior, the dash and interior all look just like a T680. Have they completely stopped production of the W900 or will it still be available?
