Activate Your ZTE Mobley

No, I haven't, I was going by the pictures on Howard Forum.  Like I said, mine is working fine so far.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1894167-Stand-alone-AT-amp-amp-T-Unlimited-ZTE-Mobley-Hotspot-now-only-20!!!!!

On mine, it looks like there are two #0 Phillips screws on the connector end holding the clamshell together.  One has a warranty seal on top that has to be broken to get it to unscrew.

I saw those pics and that's when I tried to open the Mobly - I took out the 2 screws but the case didn't separate easily & I didn't want to force it.

I have the antenna and short cable that will plug into the circuit board connector.  Now that Mobly's are available again, when my spare get's here I'll try again a bit more forcefully.  I want to drill a small hole in the case so I can access that connector.

Update:

If you order your Mobley from AT&T they send you the device already activated, all you do is plug it in and connect to it with your Phone/Tablet/computer's WiFi settings.

Don't throw away the ZTE box inside or the AT&T invoice because your new device phone number is on the invoice, and your device's IMEI number and the ICCID number are both on one side of the inner box it arrived in.

I realized it wasn't clear how to activate the device for me and others. I ordered mine from AT&T and it came activated because I just plugged it in and it had two steady green LED indicators meaning powered and connected.

I would strongly suggest that anyone who wants one to order it directly from AT&T. The AT&T lady I spoke with had another mobile hot spot device from them and it mates to one vehicle VIN so cannot be moved from car to car or RV with a Power supply. Only the ZTE can be used in any vehicle you move it to, as far as I know.

Now to assemble a cheap 12 VDC power supply using a junkyard OBD vehicle port. I have several 12 volt wall warts one of which should work.

If anyone has an AT&T phone for data, this will do as well speed-wise but save you a bunch on data usage.

I also logged into the AT&T Wi-Fi device manager while connected to the hotspot. The Quick Start Pamphlet has the address http://attwifimanager

I was tickled that it has a guest Wi-Fi feature and the Wi-Fi manager also allows me to block a number from accessing it. You can even set up a guest hotspot! That site is also where you change the default user name and password. I am naming mine the same as my home network just adding mobile to the end, and using the same password but all lower case.

The device once you use the manager is pretty simple to use. I also had to call three times to get a tech that knew what they were doing. But all of them assumed you needed to activate it and that can mess you up.

Just order yours from AT&T and your account, new device phone number, and basic setup are all done for you from AT&T. The SIM card was already installed. It is under a rubber flap on the back of the Mobley.

EZPZ. Now if only Verizon offered the same thing. Verizon also has only two bars here but much faster and clearer than any of the other carriers. Sprint here is no signal, T-Mobile none, etc.

Were I on the road this would likely work as we used main roads and parked near destinations or next to the highways for the traveling overnights. We did not work camp or snowbird just traveled in the North for summers and the South for winters and stayed from Thanksgiving through mid March here on our property with our old RV pad with full hookups we built.

Mine was also ordered from AT&T. And was told it was ready out of the box. But never could get the other light to work. Then after driving to Ms, and the Corporate store. The guy there has to redo there job. And it worked, he never did find out why the Signal light would work? But after he set it up from new, with a new phone number. All is well and working great.

I have been running it off a battery and use the charger on it every 2 days. Got my new plug  today. And now trying to figure out how to wire it up to an old Laptop power supply I have. But I'm lost when it comes to wiring. No issue with doing it from a battery. But for the life of me not sure what to do with the 2 wires coming out of the power supply?

I have the center wire I take it as the hot wire? Then the one around that ground? But don' think using the outside wires as ground sounds right to me.

Pete, just buy a 110 power source that is on Ebay or Amazon.

Glad to hear that you got yours up and running.

I second the advice to just go ahead and get a pre-made power supply. If you aren't sure, it is cheaper to get that than replace a fried Mobley no?

Thanks got it wired up. Just used a different power source I had on hand. Its for my Fillet knife to run on 110 volt.

Lou,

The Mobley worked well, but agonizingly slow here, but was even worse over in the city limits where I needed it to do video surveillance. NO coverage! I called AT&T when setting up my account and they had issues as well as not knowing anything about the connected car division. I spent too many hours with trying to correct what the last customer service (oxy) person did and when it turned out not to have enough signal to even register a download speed with the Speed test app, I gave up.

Yes I could take it apart and play with it but my home 200 Mbps cable internet for 60 bucks a month and for the extra 10 bucks, unlimited cable for $70, I really have no need to play with it because it will always be AT&T, which is on my spitlist just now :o.

If we were full time and did not have cable Internet I would jump on this and pick a winter and summer place for snowbirding right under a tower.

The Mobley device ordered from AT&T works perfectly. I can highly recommend it. Be prepared for  some bumps in the road of setting up your account and the billing part of the website. Checking the box to hold the payment doesn't. Then it takes another half hour to get someone to fix it, and there is no satisfaction that the next person won't experience it and they will fix the website.

I am sure amplifiers and antennas would go a long way to making this work anywhere, even where I needed it. But I needed it for $100 bucks and $20 a month not $600.00. See we are selling that house and there is no Internet service there save for bad 22.4 Kbps dial up.

Traveling would be a different story. I would spend that and more for a reliable Internet unlimited service on the road that would serve the five devices and 2 TVs, 2 Tablets. On the road we would not have the Ring doorbell three cameras or indoors D-Link all with speakers and mics. Those would not work at the 10Mbps speeds I got using Mobley when I drove down my street to highway 80 1.5 miles from my house.

I decided not to sell it because as bad as AT&T customer ser. and billing turned out to be for me, I'd probably be billed for the buyers use until it all got straightened out for six months!

I'm dropping the return at the UPS office for a receipt and tracking.

I am with Verizon. If I needed the service I could put up with the delays and make my own antenna and/or buy an appropriate amp for it.

Great product!

Hmm. That hasn't been my experience at all. I have one as do 3 of my sons now. I did have to call into the car connect to change my 1gb plan for the unlimited on mine (took about 10 mintues since the unlimited plan wasn't available online at that time), but for each, we went to ATT.com, made a purchase, it came, plugged it in, it worked. No billing or tech hassles whatsoever.

I do find that device orientation makes a world of difference. Ie., if the device is sitting right side up, up side down, on it's side, etc. Often doubling speeds just by changing it's orientation.

YMMV, of course, but thought I would chime in just to note for readers that it's not "always" a massive hassle to get them up and running.

Like Yarome, calling the correct Connected Car number worked well for me too, with a no hassle 5-10 minute activation on the unlimited plan.

Once we rec'd the device , set was pretty much a cake walk . It continues to work fine for us .

Guys,

The device is great! It is AT&Ts coverage that sucks here. MY wife changed over to Verizon with me because her old AT&T would not reliably connect at her now deceased parent's house which is now ours. That was two years ago and AT&T had told us they would have coverage there and here soon. It is still the same.

But when I drove close to I-20 I got 10 Mbps download which would work out there if they had any towers near. Unless amplified, all of your would have the same results from the very well designed Mobley in the areas I would be using it in.

My issues with AT&T were with setting up my customer ID and with billing.

And then there was the issue with telling my I could shut the service down and turn it back on anytime which later after I bought turned out to be not the case.

I was passing along the things that were not clear, or were clear and just wrong that I experienced. Now if Verizon would just make one at the same price I would be as happy with it as the folks nearer to AT&T service are with theirs.

As I said setting the device up was just plug and play when bought from AT&T in my case but as we read above another had to have it set up a second time by the local store.

I did message the right people in each department to listen to the recordings so that if isolated, no one else would have to go through them.

Yarome, YMDV (Your Mileage Did Vary) ;)

It's designed to be plugged into the OBD and that is where I had it and the speeds were good near towers as I posted above. I don't have a power supply and they are not intended to be used anywhere but stuck in the vehicle's OBD port. Thus my testing there to see what was what. And what that was that it works quite well and if out of range of a tower I am SOL. Perhaps I gve up too soon and should have tried a power supply and Phone amp. But I have no other need for those beyond a few months of security camera use.

I am a big fan of the device, just not AT&T here in my location.

Have a great 4th folks!

In the locations RV wants to use it, if ATT is not strong in that area, the older tech of the Mobley will have problems pulling in a useable signal. So understand RV moving on. As far as ATT CS and or even their Retention Specialist Support - it is for sure a crapshoot on who you end up with, and what you will end up with costs wise. (I won't repeat it here, but I spent many, many hours over a few weeks period, trying to get the Homebase Rural Plan.  It's been over 5 months now, and I'm still out of pocket about $48 - not counting the hours, and hours I've spent with different levels of Customer Support to get things resolved.)

I want to be clear that I'm not knocking the Mobley - I knew what it was when I bought it, and as the next few years of updates to cell towers take place, the tech is just getting that much older. In the bigger cities with strong ATT tower support area, it has served us well on this trip. In areas with marginal coverage, the ATT Unite Explore with Mobile Mark roof top dual antenna feed - has done a great job of pulling in signals (On a shared Data Plan, not me moving the card from the Mobley over...).

And here in Silverton, no ATT service at all, and using our Verizon GR UDP via Hotspot on my Samsung S6 here. Strong signal, but with the influx for the 4th of July, the tower is overloaded:)!

Back to the Mobley. I have not opened the case yet, in one area I used a WeBoost Sleek, with the Mobley in the cradle, to help the signal. Our Maximum Signal Amp internal antenna is too far away from the Communication Cabinet where I have the Mobley powered up. Minimal boost at that range, so I used our Sleek instead, and it helped enough to make a difference. I will say that my wife's iPhone 7 did get a noticeable improvement in download speed testing, with the Maximum Signal Amp, as she sits on the couch within a 6-8' range of the Internal Antenna.

I will be opening the Mobley in the future, and tether it to the WFR GOac, and hook up one of our two Maximum Signal 13" Magnetic Antenna (Pleased with their performance!!). We'll see how that does in marginal coverage areas!!

Best to all,

Smitty

Smitty,

I envision a similar setup as you have, but specifically tied to the whatever data service we would have if we get back on the road again.

I am selling our 28.5 fiver and am thinking about what is next. It is funny but on the road we traveled and did not snowbird except for that last year when our son was getting a nasty divorce done when we stayed and then decided to buy property again and stay to help with parents. And to make SH happy as she was done with RVing full time because there are only so many times she can nest in/decorate an RV.

I was amazed when Echostar came out with the first VSat system for two way satellite and then the MotoSat company really bringing it to us wayyy back in 2000-2001. Then smart phones as a hot spot was amazing.

Now it is all about speed and coverage until the world wide LEO satellite systems already starting to launch go live in the next couple of years.

Minor correction, for those that are coming to Silverton, CO in the future. I said they had no ATT coverage here. Well, it turns out they do. But some teenagers used the ATT tower for target practice awhile back, and it has not been repaired yet:)! (Which explains why every once and awhile, my wife would get a flood of Texts, and would see a solid 4 bars other phone... Probably 5 times over the last week, the 'tower awakes'...

Suspect ATT will get around to preparing it eventually:)!

And a side tidbit. The 4th of July influx of crowds to the town of Silverton was lower this year (Highway 160 from the South is down to one lane due to a pretty good size rockslide repair going on. And last year, the Mayor of Silverton changed the process that had worked we'll for Silverton over the decades. He and the local Volunteer Fire Department were having a p_ssing contest. So the Mayor hired an outside company to do the firework display that the Volunteer Fire Department had done for year after year. This resulted in more bum and rolling of turf warfare, and the location used on the hill by the Miners Shrine was pulled from the owners of the land for usage - as they did not like the Mayor's decision. This resulted in the 2016 being both in a different, not as ideal setting location, and the outside firm provided what the Mayor was able to pay and make a profit. Vs what the same money would produce in actual Fireworks with the Volunteer Fire Department not needing to be paid:)! Many, many, ticked of locals - as well as many who had come for years deciding they were not going to come back in 2017!!!) - thus, the lower crowds!!!

But even with the lower crowds, yep - back to the topic of cell coverage - they were enough to overwhelm the Verizon tower... So this is a place where 'network management' may have even added more pain to a Data user... (Though it seemed to us, that everyone was in data slow pain!!)  A classic example of Strong Signal - but still having slow data speeds...

Best to all,

Smitty

Sounds like Silverton needs a new mayor and the current one thrown in the slammer .

I have to wonder if the tower damage has been reported ... by more than one user . Preferably most of them . ;)

LOL! Another "FFTJ" (Fat Finger Type Job - or as my DW says, Smitty Brain Fade!)..

The profit was for the firm hired, as they did not work for free... No one every told us the Mayor also made a profit... We did here that he caught quite a bit of 'constructive input' by not only the businesses impacted by his decisions, but many citizens too. The group next to us here at Red Mountain RV Park, three RV's and then a few other couples that now rent  cabins from the parks lodge, have been coming here for over 19 years... One of the penned a letter to the Town Council, and then they all signed it (And they said probably another 15 signatures from others in the park that were repeat visitors.) - voicing how disappointing the 2016 Fireworks had been. They advised the Town Council to return to the normal mode that obviously had worked so well thru the years. That they would come back one more time in 2017 to see if things had returned to normal - if not, they'd not be returning for the 4th...

Sorry for my miss information, now on the Mayor vs no ATT Coverage in my earlier post:)!

No worries , Smitty . ;)

We all do the same thing .

I still think the mayor should be replaced as he obviously is too stubborn for that type of job . He's costing the community , instead of growing it .

Anyway , our Mobley is working just fine , here . We might get to Silverton sometime in the next couple of years . Hopefully , ATT will have a brand new , state of the art tower , designed specifically to service our Mobleys , by the time we get there . :D

I am so glad I do not have AT&T for my wireless provider. I returned the Mobley within the 14 days because I get about 22kbps (not Mbps - kilobits) at my house, and at my other property I bought it for, there is no data. The invoice date (purchase) was 06/21/2017. I dropped it off to UPS on Sat 1 July 2017. 10 days later.

I put it in the box and used the enclosed return prepaid shipping label. I talked with the connected car folks before ordering online from AT&T. I have the UPS receipt from dropping it off. I have a feeling it took 9 days because of the holiday weekend. But irrelevant, I dropped it off in 9 days after purchase. I got the run around and then was told after two transfers that they were going to transfer me again and gave me the direct number to that department and she gave me the main  number to start over again. By the time she got me there at 9:01 it was closed and I get to call tomorrow between 9to 9 central. Then I get to see what their problem is. This company is clueless and I am never going to be critical of Verizon again. If AT&T Gave us two new top line Samsung phones and unlimited data for less than my Verizon 2MB data plan is I would not bite at all.

I got this from them saying they are not refunding the full amount. Just saying.

Final wrap up.

Short version:

I earlier said I could afford to pay for the device if it worked for me and it cost nothing to stop and restart the service. It was only after I bought it that I was told that there was a limit as I posted above for a free reactivation. Not true item #1 found only after I bought, but was told different before I bought.

I was told if it did not work at my location I could return it for a full refund. They charged me a 45% restocking fee of $45.00!!!! Not true item #2 that they said would be a 100% refund before the sale.

Reason? Box was open.

Details below in the long version.

AT&T said they could not give me a full refund because the box was opened. This was Jeffery a manager at the Connected car division ID#JP5367. When I bought, it was in good faith, as can be seen from my posts above, and only after being told if it did not work here I could return it for a full refund. Had they said there would be an almost 50% restocking fee I would have laughed and hung up and not done business with them. I have never had any kinds of issues with Verizon like this that were not resolved fairly and to my satisfaction on one call, and maybe one transfer to a supervisor.

I was charged a $45.00 restocking fee, almost half the price of the device. The device was $99.99 and the Tax $9.25 for a total of $109.24

I asked them why the restocking fee and they said because it had been opened. I asked them how I could test it to see if it was usable here for me without opening it? So he gave me their "conflict resolution appeasement phrase" that " I can understand your feelings" but that is policy. I asked to speak to someone with policy making authority. Jefferey said no one could change that.

I could afford to pay and play with it but it did not work for me here. AT&T defrauded me and I intend to file a formal FCC complaint, and post in every outlet I can to only buy the device from AT&T if you can afford to throw away $45.00 if it does not perform as expected.

I returned it because there was not enough signal at the vacant house I wanted to use it at initially to even register a download speed and at my house I got a poor dial up speed of 22Kbps not Mbps but kilo bits.

They asked for a review, then rejected the review.

I rated the device as worked when near a tower, as I did get 10 Mbps when I drove two miles closer to the highway.

I got this back with a request to edit my review because it:

• mentions a competitor
• mentions the specific price
• contains inappropriate content
• mentions customer service issues

Here is the review:

Fraudulent sales tactics

I was told I could try it for 14 days and as long as I returned it within that time, I would get 100% of my money back. They decided to refund minus 45% restocking fee? I got referred twice and the third time they tried to transfer me the lady said she was giving me the direct number to the department I needed. She gave me 800-331-0500 in case I got disconnected, I told her that was the main number to start all over again. I asked her to stay on the line. After an hour trying to deal with this it answered and I was told they were closed, and would be open tomorrow From 9-9 Central time. it was 8:59 here. I just tried their unlimited connected car service. My two phones are with Verizon thank goodness. Everyone said whatever they thought I wanted to sell it, but went 180° when I wanted to return it. When I was getting info on returning it, a person got on and offered me 250Mbps and Direct TV all for $60.00 a month. I asked if that was local fiber-optic service up front and the guy said yes. Then they started switching between two other ladies to verify my credit and after almost an hour of back and forth I find the service was up to 250Mbps and was a box with the exact same service as already did not work here and was why I was returning it. That was ten days ago. Luckily I keep all names and receipts so have the drop off date for the ZTE Mobley device. If you go sit under a tower it works OK. and it is downhill from there. I'm astounded at the dropped hand-offs and monkeying around until they close. I am not getting that refund but I will be letting everyone in all the RV clubs know that told me about it, not worth the hassle at all. I would go back to a no cell phone house if AT&T was my only choice. I can't wait to hear the run around tomorrow. I'm retired military and another career and I have all the time I need. I'm going to see about a class action lawsuit. I rarely have seen this level of incompetence with any other company. Don't worry, Space X and two other companies are doing LEO satellite Internet constellation starting this year and soon we can dump the cable AND the cell companies that think we have nowhere else to go.

End of review that was not published by AT&T

Needless to say I am disappointed. It would be a different matter if I was told before purchasing there would be a 45% restocking fee when I was checking if I would get a refund before  purchase, which I specifically asked twice or more times before I decided to play with it for a few months of video surveillance at the vacant house. BTW, the house is within the City limits of Bossier City LA. You'd think AT&T would have better service there.

Anyway, since it can be driven to a place where there is Internet, for fulltimers it may good for days like today when it is Windows update day. You can drive the RV close enough and have coffee while waiting for big downloads to finish. 10 Mbps is reasonable but I have 200 Mbps Cable Internet here.

Rant over. I was robbed of $45.00 under the guise of a restocking fee.

I never realized how much more friendly and how I was never dropped during a customer service call, and never told one thing and then done another by them.

RV_ What you "should" have done was deactivate your account, remove the sim, then sell it on ebay for $170. Same result, but you would have been $60 (less eBay fees) in the black. ;) I still see where folks are getting $200+ sales even though AT&T has them in stock now.

Yarome, and BlueLghtning,

Yep as I said above had I known I would have kept it and sold it. I was operating from what their agents called their policy. I was told that I would get a 100% refund if it did not work here. If you read my earlier posts I figured I had nothing to lose and a good tool to gain. I really wanted it to work. I was shocked by their theft of 45% of the price as a restocking fee.

I have never had a company so obviously out of line with honest brokerage with their customer.

I just wanted everyone to know about their freakish return policy on these.

If they had said that there would be a 45% restocking fee if I returned it and nothing to show for that money.

I am going to finish that FTC complaint today. It took me a year longer to get my wife off AT&T here, which really stinks for more than voice unless you are right next to I-20 or in town and near a tower. She does estate sales and senior downsizing concierge moving and staging services. So she is out of the city limits a good deal of the time or in surrounding small towns. She would have calls dropped and break up almost all the time. Now with Verizon it is the opposite. It is rare that we have any issues anywhere with Verizon. And they bend over backwards to keep us satisfied.

AT&T's problem was not their policy alone, it was their sales people never even mentioning a restocking fee. And when asked more than a few times if it didn't work would I get a 100% refund in 14 days or less if it did not work here? Three separate sales people said that is right, you will get a 100% refund if you return it within 14 days.

I know there are areas where AT&T might have better reception and service than Verizon but I haven't been in one yet.
