Chalkie
I read an article about the proper display of the flag on Memorial Day and, honestly, it contained a couple of bits of information I guess I wasn't aware of. First, Memorial Day is the only time the flag is flown at half-mast for only part of the day. The US Flag Code lists a number of days that the flag should be flown and says "Memorial Day (half-staff until noon), the last Monday in May". The article I read also goes on to say that if you have a flag pole where you are unable to lower it to half-mast, like a flag on the side of a house, it is acceptable to attach a black mourning pennant above the blue field to indicate half-mast. This I had never heard of, and it does not appear in the flag code. Does anyone have any further information regarding this?
sandsys
What I know is that you are to raise the flag all the way up then lower it to half mast--not just raise it to half mast. And the reverse is true when lowing a flag that is being flown at half mast. At sunset you raise the flat to full staff, then lower it. Seems people are not being taught proper flag etiquette and respect. Ray,IN
Back to Garys topic; no I've never heard of the black draping. I don't see it addressed in the, United States Flag Code The origin of Memorial day/Decoration day There is a different version where it was started by confederate widows a few years prior to the "official" version. ref: https://prologue.blogs.archives.gov/2018/05/24/the-nations-sacrifice-the-origins-and-evolution-of-memorial-day/ Quote 2000 Winnebago Ultimate Freedom USQ40JD, ISC 8.3 Cummins 350, Spartan MM Chassis. lappir
Thank you for the information. I will now look at the Flags on Monday to see how many change from morning to afternoon. I doubt many. The small towns in Iowa do a lot of Flags. I haven't checked my videos of my ride yesterday, but noticed many roads and cemeteries lined with Flags, of course those 6' pole flags have no way of going 1/2 mast and I doubt anyone will apply and then remove a "Black Draping". Denny Same for us, Denny. Telescopic flag poles make half mast impossible.
