I have to agree with you Tony....going to make sure whatever tires I go with will be balanced.

Hi Rick,

I agree with you about balancing anything that rotates. I have counterbalance balancing breads in my trailer tires. Just an idea for you.

Balancing:  ALWAYS balance any tire.  Particularly trailer tires where you would never feel a bad vibration.  An unbalanced tire can cause premature wear, and as pointed out above, damage the trailer.  I have never run an unbalanced tire on anything.

Any non-hubcentric wheel, and for that matter ANY wheel, should be balanced using a "finger plate" attachment for the balancing machine which grips the wheel by the lug nut holes, the same place it is attached to your vehicle.  I never could figure out how balancing by the center cap hole was a good idea anyway...

If your tire shop does not have finger plates for their balancer, find a different tire shop, that means the one you are standing in does not care enough about you and your tires to invest a few hundred dollars in good equipment.

WalMart:  As the owner of my local corner tire shop told my wheel customer: "why the heck would you take your tires to a grocery store to get mounted?  They were probably short handed and grabbed somebody from lawn and garden to fill in."   This after my irate customer came back from getting his brand new wheels mounted at walmart where they told him all four wheels were bad and would not balance.  I sent him to my local guy who of course proceeded to balance the wheels nicely on the first try.   And yes, walmart and their lawyers are strictly by the book.  If your car/truck came with a certain tire size, and you want to upgrade a size or two, they will not do it.  Oem fit only, period.  And they are real squirrelly sometimes on even touching a wheel/tire you roll in loose (like your blown trailer tire).  I used to run goodyears on my trailers, figuring every supercenter has one in stock if I needed one on the road somewhere.  Bad theory, another discussion.

Thx for all the input from everyone. Just ordered 7-of the Sailun S637's 215/75-17.5 and deciding if beed balancing or regular balancing is the way to go since the tire shop offers both methods.

Would you mind letting me know where you got them and if prices were comparable between brands?

We may have a location here if not I'll try to get to the Mainland over the next few weeks/months.

Thanks

Rick,

If you can get regular balancing (lead weights) would go that way if you are using tire pressure monitoring. When I talked with TST about “internal” balancing, he said powder, liquid, even beads not recommended. He said the beads over time can fracture and flake and occlude monitor. I could see it with liquid or powder,  less sure I believe it with beads.

All this talk about balancing the trailer tires...what about putting Centramatics on the trailer? They seem to work well on the truck.

Phil

Thats what I’m going to do when I replace my tires next spring or late this fall. Got to save up some cash as getting the Freightliner ready is draining the piggie bank.

I'm not sold on the Centramatics. They were already on the Pete when we bought it so not sure if they helped anything being installed prior to us owning it. I did however buy a set for my Dodge 3500 which runs 22.5" tires/wheels that has a vibration that came on over time. I got tired of muscling the big tires and installed a set of Centramatics......zero noticed change.

I'd love some feedback from those who had a vib problem and had it fixed by Centramatic.

On my motor home I fought a vibration problem. Rebalancing tires would fix them for about 4,000 miles and it would start to return. Had them balanced on and off the MH.

Tire guy installed the Centramatics with a post dated check and in writing stated if problem came back he would tear up the check and take the Centramatics back at no charge.

He got to cash the check and I have been happy with them on anything I put them on including my one ton single wheel with 19.5 wheels.

We just ordered a set of 7 with Aluminum wheels from Trailer and Wheel .com on Tuesday. They shipped out on Wednesday from Ohio. Mounted on the wheels with caps and lugnuts, the price including freight was less when we called and talked to them than they were for their online price with free shipping. They are suppose to arrive at the freight place on Monday, latest tracking shows they are in Charlotte so might even be here in South Carolina tomorrow.

Roger,
Kal-Tire seems to have the best price for the Sailun's here in Alberta.
