  1. One issue is it may not be hard to get the valve itself thawed but you can still have a pretty good ice blob in the tank that may not drain and could block you shutting the valve. Where I am even a light freeze can keep me from opening the valve in the morning but if it warms up for several hours in the day and an assist by some sunshine as mine is on the morning sun side where I am parked allows me to open it later in the day. This was covered recently in another post on the forum and some of the advice here was there as well and some more that might be useful.
  2. I can believe you to the most part as I don't know for sure but I would say it may not seem like a such a savings now. Somewhere today I saw a picture of wind turbines operating in Antarctica.
  3. God know there is not now nor has there ever been any any black power (oil coal, gas) politcs right? And they have never been subsidized right? (subsidy reads a form of corporate welfare) A high percentage of my family was oil field trash so I sure am not totally anti. But just like any resource I believe in using it conservatively. Don't tell anyone I am a conservative in some areas as I don't want to get shunned. I am actively conserving the hell out of my onboard supply of propane as we speak.
  4. The obvious elephant in the room with nuclear is what to do with the by products. Solve that issue and I will be a big proponent. bigrick am I correct that turbines on froze in some places but states and countries had no issue with their? At this point as I understand that the turbines where all functioning they are such a small % of the system they could not come close to providing what we need. Another speculation is that a cold enough temps I would guess a lot of oil would have trouble flowing which could cause issues with pump and valves also.
  5. Hmmmm, even if wind and solar are not producing "now" pre se. How much oil and gas did they save for when they are most needed. Seems pretty smart to me. Must be smart in even more severe conditions. We may never be completely independent of fossils but we sure can conserve it. Double Hmmmm, seems like a plan to me, but what do I know.
  6. I don't know but I would guess it would be propane. I worked for a LPg co. once that were pretty much converting all their customers from butane to propane as it was not nearly as likely to freeze up at least in the valves just because of what you said. Just a guess as I don't know so this may be fake news.
  7. OIC is easy but what is SBT? My bro & sis n law had to move in with friends in essentialy N.Dallas. But just got a text on someone I checked on by text that is in an apartment in Terrell, Tx. and she says she has not lost power at all so far.
  8. Could be stapled and maybe from the backside.
  9. good one tx bigfoot. I was married once upon a time and it almost made me go to extremes. One time I seriously considered commiting a crime that would get me sent to prison for and extended time where she couldn't get to me.
  10. Doesn't mean I have to like it. Bah humbug
  11. I think most of the newer electric space heater have the tip over safety but I don't know about any thing with a propane type space heater.
  12. I fixed my handle years ago using flat piece of Aluminum of sufficient thickness to not bend when I pulled the valve open. It is a little longer than the standard one so easier to grab. Drilled a hole just a little bigger than the threads and put a nut on each side of the aluminum. I think the one on the outside was a lock nut. It is still there and working. In a somewhat desperate situation I turned off the water to TT and pump off I propped the toilet valve open in such a way that what I used could not drop into the tank and used a fan or heater on very low and not too close and blew it into the black tank, also tried to get sunlight or auxiliry heat to the outside valves and tanks. I used the reflective cover for the vehicle dash to reflect sun heat to that area. I had to do that 2 times. Once for a freeze up and once to dry a tank complete to do a repair using epoxy. My tanks are exposed and I usually try to dump about an hour after the high temp. for the day when I do. In winter I normally dump at about 1/2 full. If it is not quite there yet I will dump some water in to get to about 1/2 full. I have dumped warm water in to help thaw. IMO this time of year with these circumstance is a good time to put your paper in the trash vs in the black tank. You may or may not have to replace the valve. On my grey tank line down to the valve got a small split due to freezing. I used a small piece of rubber gasket and 2 hose clamps to fix it temporarily about 12 years ago. So it might not last forever. I could have used a piece of innertube with the clamps. I am pretty sure I could fix it with some epoxy or the like but I want to see how long the clamps and gasket lastl
  13. Just as well. I have a hard enough time living with myself so it would be a real challenge for someone else to do it. I have a couple of old girlfriends come out of the woodwork but they passed me by 30 or so years ago for someone flashier so that rules them out.
  14. With that ratio you would think I would have more stalking me. You think it's me???😁

yes, welcome aboard. Not retired but 7 1/2 years active in MC and AF plus reserve and National guard time. Joined MC in 1966 after working for a circus for a short time after graduating HS.
  16. It is something I had considered but I am alone at this site for the time being and the way my panels are in relation to vents, antenna's and air conditioner it is not likely possible. Ideal situation is the weather cooperating at least a short time and I can use my 8ft step-ladder and a brush on about a 5ft pole. I just have to be really careful as I am not real mobile. I did a little work up top using that ladder this summer without getting on the roof. I might even have to melt ice to use the ladder. Wish I had thought to put it under the trailer. As long as I don't lose shore power I will be good and so far I haven't. Thanks for the thought though.
  17. Currently just outside Albq. in the mountains at about 7000ft. Pretty good snow and cold but not catastrophic. So far have not lost electric which is very good. Am set up to not need it if extreme but would not run that heater unless I can physically look at it while it is on. Did not get as cold as expected last night but the next few nights could crack zero to 7 degrees if it goes as predicted. My solar panels are flat on roof and I can't get up to clear them so that is bad as it make electricity more critical. It was a balmy 50 degrees in my TT this morning about 07:30 but with fair sun has warmed up considerably. Out side is showing 36 degress at the moment.
  18. I would say a lot of this was due to the location being extremely high usage and very close to metorpolitan areas. All of mine were either federal or state. If I was smart enough to post a picture I would let you see one of a brand new heavy gauge metal door on a new never used restroom with holes as big as a 12 gauge slug through it and some large divot in the concrete wall at the back. The one that was closet to my site was a metal door with 9mm rounds through it. The first time it was a whole clip. The last time it was one round just under the door handle that has not been repaired. It was about 8 tenths mile from my site. I am at a different site now on the same FS District behind a locked gate.
  19. Me too at least at a few but he should have had something clearly identifiable like a vest and hat with patch and a name tag with FS or NP logo. Also I don't quite understand him trying to collect on a free site. I know I never did.
  20. Lots of experience can really help but you can still get in a jackpot due to no fault of your own. Where I volunteer now if I work the desk and answer question about our sites in person or by phone I highly suggest that they get here as early as possible and drop their trailer or separate motorhome from toad and scout it out as far in advance as possible. I also highly suggest they have a back-up plan before they even scout our sites even if it is just a W-mart parking lot for one night. I tell them I have been full timing in a 30ft TT for over 20 yrs. A little bit odd but the most experienced seem to pay the most attention. related to the weight limit bridge, I topped a small hill around a curve and came up on a bridge out. 2 lane Farm to Market RD with no room to turn around. Especially fun since I am a single rv'r so no spotter. Raccoon Valley skp park has a warning not to come from 1 direction due to a very low clearance bridge.
  21. You can get started with a bare bones van or pick up with just a camper shell or even some Suv's that you can sleep in. Depending on where you camp the first thing you need is a place with a bed that is dry. If you stay at campgrounds with restrooms to start that solves a lot of problems. Since you are young and flexible even a standard height van or campershell will keep you dry. You can use a stove like a Coleman stove to cook. Carry a couple 5 gal water containers. You will learn and improve as you go. Having a standard height vehicle can be useful in some situations. One place I camped I want to park and ride the green line into Wash. DC and I had a slightly higher camper shell that would not fit into the parking garage. Thats pretty rare of course but it is a consideration. Actually in some remote camping spots in forest clearing low limbs can be an issue. Where I am volunteering now we have some dispersed campsites that are not amenable to higher vehicles.
  22. my idea is to use up all natural resources by the time I die and let my kids and grand-kids fend for themselves. Me trying to be ironically funny.
  23. Boy that would be sneaky. The ones I was in it was very obvious and well signed. I also had appropriate attire with an identity badge with my name. None of them ever minded that I kept toilets clean, emptied the trash can, picked up litter put out abandoned campfires and called for help when someone injured themselves. Doing it like the guy you describe is asking for trouble. I was very officially a host. Even as an official I had no authority to make anyone do anything so I pretty much had to get them to cooperate voluntarily. All except the bear that tried to come in the window one morning. It took a little more to get compliance out of it and since it had no vehicle it did not have to pay. The fee there was just for vehicle parking and it was called at the time a "Fee Demonstration Project" that was extended several times until it was finally renamed and became permanent.
  24. Pex has made me very happy but I still don't like to test it. Mine has recovered very well so far.
