  1. Suite, that's a reasonable and valid question. My recommendation is based on thirty years on the road, using shops from coast to coast. None are perfect, although a couple get close. My home Volvo shop messes up regularly and I get to pay for their mistakes. I call it the "incompetence tax". It just depends on who is behind the wrench. The difference is in management. They know me personally, treat me with respect and do their best to do a good job at a fair price. The kid who did an incomplete job on my brakes will likely grow into a better mechanic, with proper oversight and mentoring. Since there seems to be no such thing as a perfect shop, I prefer one with exceptional values and ethics, hence my recommendation. Jay
  2. It was pretty simple, the tech simply didn't torque the brake chamber nuts down properly. Very visible in the pictures. Just a sloppy tech. I thought about going to Volvo, but my experience with them is less than satisfactory and the chamber was leaking enough I didn't want to go that far. Jay

  4. I think he was saying it took 1/4 mile past where he was in the ditch to get to a stop. That's pretty much a really close call. Jay.
  5. On our way back to FL last summer, I pulled into a campground just north of Knoxville hearing a lot of air loss, with the matching gauge dropping like a rock. In the morning, I went to a nearby local shop, where they quickly changed out my bad brake chamber and we were on our way. Unfortunately, while checking the truck a couple months later, I discovered the new chamber almost falling off and taking the slack adjuster with it. That cost almost $600.00 to correct. I was, of course, not really happy with that level of incompetence and left the shop a rather scathing review. My experience with shops left in the mirror is that they kinda laugh at you and then suggest I bring it in so they can look at it. Long story somewhat shorter, Allen at Performance Truck in Heiskell, TN saw my review, requested and looked over my documentation and fully refunded the almost $600.00 the Volvo shop charged me to fix the mistake. If you're ever near Knoxville and need service, I highly recommend them. No one's perfect, but they truly stand behind their work. Jay
  6. I pull both commercial trailers and our fiver, with separate hitches. I've been into campgrounds in multiple states and they never give me a second look. I was initially concerned about that, but not any more. Most are just interested in our setup and don't care about our commercial designation. Jay
  7. You could just close up the holes with a couple stainless steel carriage or round head bolts. I would think it would look okay. Jay

  9. I do my own trading, using both trailing stop losses and limit trades. I've done leveraged trades in the morning and traded them a few hours later. However, you can't use those proceeds for a new purchase until it's settled. Since I haven't done that in some years, my memory isn't the best, but I'm quite sure that one trade before settlement is the legal limit. At my brokerage, that's three days.   12. I generally wait to see what happens, but if that tail isn't gone within a reasonable time, I'll get off an exit or rest area to shake it off. I don't care to have a vehicle behind me for an extended period that I have to constantly monitor. Jay

    Frankly, I was shocked the last time we went to the lake and it held up for the entire week. I can't believe I didn't check the date on the battery when it died. It did pretty much just live on the charger... After the kids were grown and gone, we only went to the lake (Dale Hollow) for a week every three years or so. So, twenty years is just my (kinda) educated guess. The boat just turned 30 years old, so.. Jay

    I agree with pretty much everything here, as there's generally little to no savings going with group 31 vs deep cycles. However, in my experience a good 3 stage charger kept my boat starter battery going for almost 20 years, so... I'm happy with that. The battery died because the charger died in storage. Who knows how much longer I might've got out of that battery? Jay

    I'm totally okay with your posting here, but that's just me. Of course, you can just use starting batteries, with the understanding they won't hold up under deep cycle usage. Starting batteries have much thinner plates to generate high amperage for starting use, while deep cycle batteries have thicker plates to withstand deeper cycling use. If your usage is only the top 10% or so, they might last a reasonable time. I'm thinking, for the price, why not try? Worth a shot.. Jay

  18. I was just thinking out loud, and you've just reaffirmed the purpose of the ignore function.. What was I thinking??!?
  19. They're all 5 volts, but more amperage is generally better and allows you to charge more devices faster. Many larger devices, like tablets, may take forever to charge on a small charger, if ever. Plus, there's a wide range of quality. It's helpful to stay with a known brand, like Anker. Jay
