SuiteSuccess
Another thread raised a question in my mind. Do the computers in our trucks have separate battery backups and if so do they need replacing at certain time intervals? My truck is 13 years old. chief916
Suitesuccess. I can't say for sure on the modern trucks but I do know that the 1997 Volvo with the Detroit s in them have a battery in them that from what I was told, can't be replaced. That came from a reliable friend and long time truck mechanic. We tried changing things on the computer but to no avail. I ended up taking the truck to the specialist on these motors. They couldn't fix it so they replaced it. $3500. Now I've got my cruise control back and it works great.
spindrift
The ECM on the Cummins gets its 12V supply from the engine starting bank; no internal battery in the ECM. Morelli
no backup battery on d13 engine that i have found. power is directly taken from the main battery via separate wire and fuse. need to make sure that wire and connection is clean and well secured. had to disconnect mine and reset / reboot all the computers and sensors. RandyA
Carl, there is no backup battery on your Volvo D12. All necessary intelligence for operation of the truck is set in ROM - which, BTW, is re-programmable thru Volvo with cooperate approval and at a cost. If you disconnect the truck batteries and power to the EECM you may find that it does not run exactly the same until the EECM has a chance to "learn" certain parameters from the various engine sensors. If the battery in the ecm is going bad you will probably have to send the ecm out for repair. Chief916
