Macodiva
Hi All, It's been a while since i visited last but think i've finally found one i like! (class It's has Alaska plates but is currently in Utah. It's priced around $20,000 Can anyone tell me roughly how much it would be to register & insure in California? It's a 2001, will it still need a smog test & does anyone know if Alaska registered are already smog compliant? Thanks

packnrat
twice as much as it should. reg based on sales price ( as new). pluse extras to cover the stuff the state wants you to pay for. ( no political rant here. but there is a huge one for this).

Lou Schneider
CA will charge either depreciated value from the initial purchase price or what you paid, whichever is higher. This determines both the initial sales (use) tax and the yearly registration cost. If it's a gas motorhome, make sure all of the engine smog components are intact and haven't been removed or bypassed. The initial part of the smog test is a visual inspection of the engine compenents and if they're missing or not CARB approved, you'll have to make it so before you can smog and license it.
