Extended Warranties

We are buying an a used 2015 Motor Home tomorrow. It had a 2 year warranty that stays with rig until 2 yrs has passed from delivery date to the original owner. We do not want to purchase one from the dealer but do need one. Any recommendation for companies and coverage?

Look at Good Sam Extended Warranty and Xtra-Ride.

The thing to do is carefully read the contract and see what is cover and most important what is not covered or is excluded.

Then decide if it is worth the cost of the coverage. It is basically an insurance policy. You may well be better served by taking the money and setting it aside and use it to pay for the repairs out of pocket.

Just from our initial research, shop for Extended Service Contracts not from the dealer. Warranties can only come from the manufacturers. Dealer get a markup from a policy from the insurance company offering the Extended Service contract.

FMCA forum has a lot of entries on this subject.

One feature we found to look for is the policy being an Exclusionary policy. An Exclusionary policy state what is not covered, everything else is. A Comprehensive policy states what is covered, it is up to you to verify that everything that can go wrong is stated, a challenge

They are not exactly insurance policies but that is a good example. Why do we insure things? We have had one on both our 5th wheels .Do the homework.

We have had insurance on our homes for over 40 years and the total premiums paid would be astronomical and guess what we have not got our money back so do not use that as a excuse same with near all insurance..

The only BAD THING is that they have a little clause that states that records of all maintenance required must be produced.

If they can find ANY information where records on ANY required maintenance is not available, they refuse to pay for the repair, or beat you down about you "record keeping". That is how the game is played.

They want your considerable monthly payment, but they DON'T want to have to pay anything out.

Would you share with us what company you have had that experience with? I have had such RV coverage from DFS Warranties, American RV Warranty, and one other whose name I don't recall and have never once had any potential covered item refused, or even questioned beyond the information from the shop doing the work. Neither have I ever been asked to produce any of the records that you state are required. I have read many such contracts and a few do require the buyer to keep records of required maintenance for chassis components, but none in my experience have ever asked me to produce them.

But if you buy the cheapest one then they probably will try to avoid payment as much as possible, just as cheap health insurance does. I never buy anything without first reading all of the contract and suggest that nobody else should either.

Look at the warranty for your auto/truck it says the same thing.

As a rule, I don't believe in "Extended Warranties", or what ever else they call them.

That being said, our new PU has so many gidgits and gadgets. I reluctantly bought one.

Well this rig has a lot of that stuff! We will take a long time to figure it all out! That said, there are a lot more things that can go wrong!

I purchased an extended warrantee from the dealer I purchased my used class A from. I purchased it because there was no maintenance history. It was worth every penny. I have a little over a year left and it has paid for itself. I have never had a repair refused.

I have been looking at extended warrantees so I can continue after this one runs out. So far, the one offered through FMCA seems the best.

"They want your monthly payment, but they don't want to have to pay anything out"

That has been my experience with warranties and insurance.

Would you share with us what business isn't out there trying to make as much profit as they can? I sure don't want to invest with them! With any kind of insurance, including extended warranties, you can buy cheap or you can buy quality, but very rarely are both found in the same product, so it is your choice. And like most things, good research is required to get a good product. If you buy a warranty or insurance, you need to read and understand the entire contract before you sign and pay your money. If you fail to do so, then you take your chances.
