That's where I was going with this but also thinking about Armageddon and what might be better than the gas gennys I have at home. Doesn't appear that there's a "best" option.

I'm about to turn 64 and a half. What's the best way to start this process? I understand it's complicated as I've been getting emails every day from "consultants" more than willing to take my money.

We attended the Hershey RV Show a few weeks ago and finally got to see a solar generator in the flesh. I've seen that the number of manufacturers has increased over the past couple of years. Does anyone have a unit? Are there advantages/disadvantages associated with these units versus battery storage?

"Minimum" blowby measured how? By sight or using a manometer? My advice, have the engine evaluated by a reputable engine shop before spending $25-30K on a rebuild. Even if there is excessive blowby, you're going to want an inspection of your rods and mains in order to determine whether you only rebuild the top end or go the full Magilla and include the bottom end as well. My bad...reread and saw head gaskets NOT valve gaskets. I'd still have both bottom and top ends evaluated.

I'm not saying it doesn't need a rebuild but leaking valve cover gaskets wouldn't immediately point me to a rebuild. I'd have a reputable shop change the gaskets and perform a blowby test. How many miles on the engine?

Why do you think it needs an inframe?

Congrats Rick! I think I have some feeling for your trials and tribulations. I trust you won't remember them but just a little bit.

Can you verify that you're using 10W30 weight earl? Viscosity can be down in one test and up in the next so it could be a factor of temperature control during testing. There is an ASTM standard for testing but it isn't always followed. Hopefully, you still have some of that old oil. I'd test again with Blackstone and see what you've got. I'd be concerned but it surely isn't time to start digging into your engine.
