  1. It seems obvious to me, based on the timing, that Jack reduced his footprint on this forum at the same time that he started his new venture in Kansas. It's my hunch (and only a hunch) that there were those who, for whatever reason, were just waiting to pounce and snipe at anything he posted, claiming everything was commercially related to his business. Jack, being the sensible and civilized guy that he is, very likely decided to just not give them any ammo. I too really miss his input, as he was the primary motivation for my joining this forum. It's not the same without him. Jay
  2. My memory's getting a little spotty on this, so my apologies. Typically, the domes are service specific, i.e. they're only for Dish or only for DirecTV. Also, domes before a certain point in time, maybe ten years ago, plus???? don't work with newer technology at all. Best thing to do is grab the model number off the unit call King Controls. They'll be able to tell you which unit you have and if it's still useable. Good luck! Jay
  3. Soooo... Maybe they were pricing it high enough to not have to do it? Good luck in your search. These things can take time. I looked for several years before I found this place in Ocala, FL. Jay
  4. You might keep shopping around. I had mine done base coat - clear coat, for about $12,000. That included fairly extensive fibreglass repair on the hood and rather substantial disassembly of boxes, genset, fairings, etc.-plus a lot of work cleaning up the frame and painting it a contrasting color. It's not show quality, but the prep work was pretty carefully done and we're really happy with the outcome. 1999 VNL 610, for reference. Jay
  5. Sounds like you have it all worked out. That's a good thing. Seems to me that you could use a latching relay on each converter leg to safely connect and disconnect independently as needed, as another possible solution. Jay
  6. Yes of course, that makes sense. My memory isn't what it used to be, but then...what is?? Jay
  7. All true of course, but I think Glenn's primary concern - and mine as well - is about backfeeding from one converter into another. Is that not something that needs to be worried about? A combiner is not going to prevent backfeeding. Jay
  8. A battery isolator will do the same thing, since it's actually just two diodes connected together at the output. A rectifier has four diodes connected in a way to "rectify", or convert alternating current to direct current. That's not what you need for your application, although in theory you could use half of the bridge to do what you need. Jay P.S. Actually, in thinking it over, the battery isolator won't work, because the electrical flow goes the wrong way. You need the flow to the combined end, not from. Hope that helps.
  9. Very cool! That's where we always stay! Jay
  10. Which is the RV park you're referring to? We stay in Tallahassee regularly to visit family. Did we stay at your place? Jay
  11. Have you been to the HHRV resource? Copied from there.. From Dave K (Dave): I had my Volvo registered in GA as a private truck, all GA requires for that is Class A, NON commercial driver's license to operate and insurance as a private vehicle. GA DOT officer's I checked with around Dalton area Northwest GA) confirmed I was not even required to have annual safety checks. I had the truck inspected annually each year to shut up other states who may give me grief, but it was not an issue in GA. In order to get our vehicles all into one state for registration, we turned all the titles over to John Bennett's office in Montana. (I own physical property in Montana so I have a different situation than you will) Our 1996 Volvo is registered permanently for the cost of fees that a single year in GA as a private truck would have cost us. I believe I was paying around $250.00 a year for GA plates with 54,999 lbs. rating. Once you cross over the 54,999lb GVW plates, the fees go up again, so I recommend you weigh your rig as a whole completely ahead of time for accurate GVW requirements. The lower you go, the lower the fees. GA is big truck friendly. I don't know what the rules are on MH tags and title anymore, but I am going to Dalton, GA within the week to get some DMV paperwork taken care of on a non-related issue. There used to be several GA titled trucks and/or MH plated trucks on this forum, but I believe most owners have left the group, sold their trucks, or moved to other states to get away from GA's high cost Ad Valorem Tax fees. From GeorgiaHybrid (Dave) Just thought I would let you know about the registration on our truck. The Dade County Georgia Tax Assessors Office are very familiar with a HDT registration now and should be able to help the other counties in the process. Georgia really doesn’t know what to do with our trucks but now that a precedent has been set, it shouldn’t be too hard to follow. http://www.hhrvresource.com/node/45.html#Georgia
  12. That seems odd.. I don't pay any attention to which forum section I'm in, although the HDT section is what attracted me to this forum. I just scan all the new posts for interesting tidbits. Don't care what section it's in. Jay
  13. The primary way I know my clutch needs adjusting in my '99 Volvo is that it's engaging too far up on the pedal upstroke. It's always nice after it gets adjusted and the clutch engages closer to the floor, but how close probably depends on the individual truck. Jay
  14. I did quite a bit of research when I began investing in stocks. I did some individual stocks with mixed results, plus I also did some day trading during the 2009 crash and did reasonably well. After trying different strategies, I settled on ETFs because of the extremely low fees and also because of the targeted sectors. Also, I'm a firm believer in staying away from individual stocks, as they can go to zero. I do diversification, but do not over diversify, which just waters down your investments. I've always been self directed, so I'm not likely to choose a mutual fund. In the last few years, I've sold all my investment real estate and moved to ETFs. I've invested in real estate most of my adult life, but it's generally a lot of work and headache. At this age, I'm done with that. Very happy with my portfolio results. Jay
  15. Exactly... I don't invest in ANY single companies anymore. I only invest in ETFs, which have very low expenses. I've been completely pleased with my results for the last fifteen or so years. Jay
  16. Maybe in the future you could get a phone that does wireless charging. Then you don't have to worry about the charge port. That's always been a weak point in my older phones. I really like wireless charging. Jay
  17. Hmmmm.. Guess I'll have to watch it a few more times to figure that out. Jay
  18. Good question, and this is all true. We all have different levels of comfort with risk and need to evaluate that independently. Incidentally, yes, I've (I think??) seen Supplements in the $600 range. Each person needs to calculate the risks and costs for themselves, as Blues has done so well. Jay
  19. This is true and yet another thing to consider. However, my experience, from a single source, (me), is that the 20% portion of the bills are very modest and reasonable. In most cases, they were still much less than the Supplements I priced. An extreme example - a Medicare bill for approximately $1.4m billed out the 20% portion to me at less than $6k, or 0.4% of the actual bill. Very manageable and certainly not shocking at all to me. This may have been the one time where a Supplement would've actually been less. Jay
  20. This is quite inaccurate. There's absolutely nothing to be careful about. There are dozens of Advantage Plans available (disclaimer, I'm looking in FL), so many that it's difficult to navigate them all. If there's a hiccup and you default back to Original Medicare, you simply pick a new Advantage Plan in your next open enrollment period. There are no restrictions to changing back and forth between Medicare and Advantage, other than the yearly enrollment calendar. I've personally done it and also discussed it with Medicare personnel. Jay
  21. You've done a quite thorough job of navigating the Medicare maze. Well done! It's difficult to understand at best. Couple things.. Medicare itself is the default form of insurance. Should something screw up between the annual election periods, you default back to Original Medicare, which happen to us one time when I messed up my late wife's Medicare Advantage. You don't "qualify" in any way for an Advantage plan, but you do for your typical Supplement, as I understand it. Finally, the Medicare charges for days 61-90 are one of the most compelling reasons we've always used an Advantage Plan. We've been very happy with that. Jay
  22. Thank you for the updates. They're much appreciated, as we once again were forced to cancel at the last minute. Hopefully some day we can actually attend in person. Jay

  24. If you go back and read his posts, Glenn doesn't actually use any prescription drugs, therefore absolutely no point in getting more than a very basic plan. Jay
