Window install using VHB tape

Steve from SoCal

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of putting a back window in my truck and, using VHB tape to attach it to the sheet metal.     Anyone done this?      It will most likely be a framed slider but, it could be a frameless fixed window.      The frameless option is where I think the VHB tape would come in handy.

I am building a dinette in the bottom bunk space and a window would be a nice addition.

When all the windows in existence are built for screws and butyl tape, why use VHB? Ever need repairs, you'll be cursing past self under your breath.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

OK I admit I have no experience installing these type of windows.

Butyl tape sounds like the proper medium.

The title of this thread sent me down a spiral. My most recent conversation about windows had to do with Microsoft Windows so I was trying to figure out how you'd install that from a VHS tape. Following a post without know which thread it falls under does make for some interesting thoughts. :)

I’m in the auto glass business.  A bolt in, butyl sealed back glass is common in older Ford pickups.  The rest of the world uses urethane caulk to adhere and seal glass to the body.  The latter would definitely be the way I’d recommend.

I used urethane to mount my side widows. So far so good.

Is there a particular flavor of this stuff you suggest?

The brand I use is "Sika".  However you can get similar at NAPA.  I think they carry a DOW product.  Just get the matching primmer and any other "support" items.
