Lance A Lott
The def that's in my tank is from when I drove it home last April. I have no way to know how old what was in the tank was when I Picked up the truck. When I started it up a week or so ago to take it out of the garage it was showing nox codes. I was wondering if it was advisable to start with fresh def.
NDBirdman
When in doubt, just do it. Is there a drain on the bottom of the tank? Death Juice is cheap. The stuff in my tank is about 8 months old but I'm not getting any codes. But, I only drive mine bout once a month. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in. DesertMiner
What about changing the filter at the pump? Also check the condition of the tank and the supply lines.
NoDirectionHome
DEF doesn't go bad. It does degrade in strength, but your system will just adjust and use more till it's effective.
Scrap
A DEF refractometer will tell you which way to go if it is suspect. Dip a sample and if above 34% and below 30% it'll need to go.
GeorgiaHybrid
If you are at the ECR, give me a shout. I have a DEF refractometer that you can use to check it.
Lance A Lott
Thank you for the quick replys. If I work real hard I hope to use the truck for our August vacation. I looked up the price of a def tester, I think I will change it out that will be less expensive. This is the first diesel I have had with def so not much experience with it. jkoenig24
DEF has a shelf life of at least two years. It's OK if it freezes and then thaws. If you've been adding fresh DEF to whatever was in the DEF tank, you're probably fine.
