DirecLink Delphi to Maxbrake Delphi match up

So my maxbrake control is trashed.  Bought the DirecLink but I think that both these controllers Delphi harnesses are using the same wiring diagram.  Can anyone who has the Maxbrake tell me what function each of the 4 wires control?  I know black wire is power and blue wire is trailer brakes and I think red wire is for brake light and white maybe ????  I don't know.  Not a real whiz at electrical.  Just want to know if I can just plug the DirecLink into the Maxbrake harness?.  They look similar in color and connection function.  Thanks.

Bob....I had already checked the resource guide and although they mention the Maxbrake and the DirecLink and how they function there's no definitive as to whether a person can just go in and remove just the Maxbrake control head and sensor...and install the DirecLink controller using the same Maxbrake Delphi wiring harness.  When I bought my truck several years ago it already had the Maxbrake system installed and not having any electrical knowledge o what wires go to what....both harnesses look identical...4 wires each all same colors and pigtails.  I'm thinking that the harness and the way it's connected into the truck will work for both brake controller's.  Thank you for taking the time to have past your information on to me.  I'm going to try connecting and if it works....or not...I will post results.

When the Maxbrake controller in my won ton Dodge failed I plugged a DirecLink directly into the truck’s factory Delphi plug.

This does not answer your question “which wires do what?” of course, but it worked on me Dodge. :D

Ok.  Worth a shot.  Thanks.

Call direct link. They seem to be real hands on. I think you can plug into the existing plug but I would call to verify.

Will check with the DirecLink engineer.  I've talked to him last week...when I was purchasing the unit.  He seemed up to speed on the unit but didn't know that the harness was a Delphi.

Thank you on input.

Red is brake light signal, and white is ground.

Jim I found the red wire on the Delphi connector just hanging out and not connected to anything.  Went back and looked at the jackalopee and there is indeed a red wire connected to the brake light but I for the life of me can't find where that wire from under my dash is.  Can I tap into the black or white wires that are attached to my brake light switch that is attached to my airbrake?  I think once the red wire to the harness is properly connected then the DirecLink should power up.

I would say yes but I haven't laid eyes on your system or traced the wires.  I don't know if Volvo was using their wiring or a combination on the "Volvo WIA" trucks.

The Direct Link is fused and protected against miss-wiring.  So I would hook it up and see.  If it doesn't work, then try again.

Ok.... I'm going to poke around with a test light and see what I can do.  I assume that since it's a brake light wire current should run when I hit the brake.  Once I find the wire I should be able to tap into it.

Ok found the brake wire back to the jackalopee... didn't cut but just pushed my probe through the insulation..turned on the truck and plugged in the unit and the blue display came on.  It kept searching through the screen trying to find my vehicle then after numerous attempts the screen would go dark.  I believe my truck is to old.  BUMMER!!!!!!  I really wanted this controller.  I know what the DirecLink engineer will tell me tomorrow when I call him....send it back.  Anyway I can say that it doesn't work on the 1997 WIA.  Someone...and I can't remember who told me, there's another controller out there that will work.  If anyone has any suggestions, please don't hesitate to sing out.  Thanks for everyone's input and help.

It works when it works.  I've been thru 2 of them.

Are you still using this product?  Do you have an alternate item you may be thinking about?  I'm sending this DirecLink back in the morning.  I'm giving the Hayes controller a hard look.  I'm not aware of any other units that get the high marks that the Hayes and the DirecLink get.  Would like your thoughts on this.

I got my reservations about the Hayes unit. My brakes worked ok with my dually. Got Freightshaker, Jackolee, Hayes and had trouble with brakes locking. Never stopped it. Finally removed electric brakes, they looked new and magnets checked good. Put on disc and Bludot system and works great. Hayes still on truck, removed fuse.

See if you can find someone that fixes electronics in your area and give them your MaxBrake and see what they can do.  Even if it cost a couple of hundred I think it would still be worth it.  Otherwise I think the Hayes is your only option unless you have hydraulic trailer brakes then you could go Bluedot.

Alan at Direct Link would never return my e-mails after I sent him my ABS PID codes, and other items requested.  That was more than 6 months ago.  The Hayes works, the new version has a circuit board instead of the potentiometer.

Thanks Nigel for the info but seeing as how I can get the Hayes for less than 250....I'm willing to forgo for the time being getting the MaxBrake fixed.  That being said...I will be keeping my eyes open for a repair specialist.

Ok so I got the Hayes brake controller today.  But sick with a cold so won't be doing much today.  Once I'm up top shelf I'll go pick up some npt fittings and install this baby.  Thank you to all for all your help.

Obtw... Jim I don't know if you got my pm email or not.   I tried to return to you but something went array.  So sorry.  But thanks

Ben
