Where to Find High End Gentle Used RV's

Recommended Posts

While looking thru several of the online RV sales sites like RVT.com and RVTrader, I have seen several New Horizons for sale but very rarely a Space Craft or Continental Coach.

Where are they? What sales sites can I browse and drool over?

I do know that the manufacturers have several for sale themselves on their sites, but there has to be other for sale as well.

Are you talking motorhomes or 5ers?

Many RV dealers specialize in used high-end motorhomes. A friend considered trading in his 04 Essex for a 2003 Foretravel in S. California, but the dealer wanted too much to boot.

I suspect most of those who buy a high-end 5er or MH keep them until they can no longer travel, or expire. Finding these units on the internet depends on how a dealer uses the internet.

Ray, looking at 5th wheels. I find buses / coaches most everywhere, but it dawned on me that I never see the custom 5th wheels for sale. They may be low volume but after 20+ years there should be some available. All I ever see are New Horizons from the 2007-9 era.

National Multi-list advertises itself as the worlds largest "for sale by owner" website. I just ran a quick search for used Foretravel motorhomes, got about 8 results. Quick search for Space Craft obtained 3 results. Continental coach - 7 results.

The reason I asked? Continental Coach is a MH.

While Forks RV has been around since 1991, they come from the crew quarters side of the RV industry and are probably better known for those with bunk houses and other mobile quarters. I'm not sure when they began building the Continental line but the first reports of them that I can find is from RV Business in 2013 when they partnered with Teton Owners club. The latest story on them seems to be from February, 2015 with the introduction of the Continental line. Looking at the webpage from the link in post #6 it would seem that they build trailers up to 49' 9 3/4" in length but I can't recall ever having seen one. They build in very limited numbers and so that is probably the reason that they are difficult to find used. You my find some help if you visit their Facebook page.

EDIT: repaired Facebook link

Kirk,

I think that was just a new model introduction. I know that Continental has been around a wee bit longer than 2015. The premium RV company that builds a lot of bunkhouses that you are thinking about is probably Spacecraft RV as they build a LOT for traveling show use and will build almost anything. They are one of the top custom builders of fifth wheel as well as Forks and New Horizons.

Spacecraft uses the Spacecraft name on all of their products. Forks RV does build office and bunkhouse trailers but they are under the STC brand name (Specialty Trailer Company).

If you follow the links they seem to show who builds the Continental & that is Forks RV. I made a bad link to their Facebook page but have now repaired it. If you want to know about them and what they build, visit the Forks RV website and follow the links there to floor plans and check them out. They have on connection to Spacecraft MFG, who lists no model called Continental, as far as I can find. If there is a connection, I have not found it.

Some of us who live in Fla consider the Naples area to be God's waiting room. Just sayin.

Now I get the reference. While wintering in Ft. Myers, the couple next to us became too ill to drive their Phaeton back to NH. Bought a trailer in another park, and began selling everything out of the MH. He priced the MH to me for next to nothing for that yr coach, but we were not interested in a MH at that time.

Or other brands. Last year I found a 2002 Provost bus with 39000 miles on its. Owner wanted $24k for it. It was in perfect working condition.

We're shopping for a new to us 5th wheel. What I'm considering is buy an older floor plan that we like and have it completely remolded inside and painted outside.

There is a stacker toyhauler on the SpaceCraft website, but it's a little pricey... unless someone wants to make the deposit for me!

Last winter we found a New Horizons MotoMover that was everything we wanted for $90k. Like new condition, but we moved too slow on it though.

I was just hoping there was a high end RV listing company like Forbes has in the back of the magazine....

A Prevost conversion with 39k miles for only $24k? You must have left a 0 off of each number? I just found a 1991 Prevost for $89k!

It was in Utah, owners were without children to leave anything too, and were on their way to a retirement center. They sold everything for pennies on the dollar. The coach lasted 3 hours on E-bay, 2 cars, condo in southern Arizona somewhere, were all sold at auction.

WOW!!! Now that was a heck of a deal!! I probably wouldn't even have looked at because the price was so low...my father drilled it into our heads that if a "deal looked to good to be true, it probably was" and that little saying has saved me from many scams along the way and I probably missed out on some "deals" too!!!

Back to the question about a location to look at high end RV's...here is one that fits that description...http://motorhomesoftexas.com/ and they are some of the nicest folks to talk to. They helped us out tremendously when we were first looking at class A's. We had no clue about the difference in quality and what to look for and they spent lots of time showing us the high end models even though they knew we would probably never be able to buy one!! The deal mainly in Newmar, Monnaco and usually have quite a few Foretravels.

Might I suggest a DRV Mobile Suites. We love ours and they are high end at a reasonable price. Contact Rolling Retreats in Elk City, OK Slade and Alica are super people and have some very good deals on new and used units.

I agree with your assessment on the new units but the units a couple of years old (before Thor) are still high quality. We are taking our 2011 36RSSB3 with Vanity Slide over to Slade for an upgrade to the Samsung RF18 residential refrigerator. Slade does a lot of these upgrades and the factory is now offering the residential units as standard/optional equipment. He charges about $4,000 for the complete upgrade including the Magnum Inverter.

Since we plan to keep this unit until we are through RVing we felt the upgrade was warranted. Reports by other RVers give the upgrade a two thumbs up. With the inverter and dual T-105 batteries they can get about three days of use before needing to recharge. We bought a Honda 3000 watt generator for $800 to recharge if we do any long term boondocking.

Good Luck in your search and decision.

Thanks Helio, We have looked at many rigs in the past 3 years, DRV included. We are fulltime, 4 years now and love our Carrilite. But we are considering moving to a different rig if we can find one we like. DRV comes close but there are items we don't like or want. We have talked with RR about having a DRV spec'd out to what we want, but for that price, we can go to SC or NH and more of what we desire.
