Battery Time

These are 1100 cca batteries.

Monday I'll be able to get out and check for prices and tighten connections, etc.

This is a super timely topic as I am about to replace all four of my batteries.

I just got off the phone with the Volvo dealer he quoted me $92.00 per batter for Interstate 925CCA. Those are Canadian $$ so with the exchange that is closer to $75 USD.

Cheers,

X2 As I said before, you are looking at alternator output (in volts), not battery charge. Mine shows 14.2 right after start up and then levels out between 13.8 and 14 when running. Check your belts and alternator before you start messing with the batteries!

My first set of batteries lasted 8 years, mostly vacation use and on the Battery Tender when parked.

X3 on looking at the alternator first. Could save you some money. Or piece of mind.

When I bought my Volvo, the wire from the Alternator to the power stud on the starter had been replaced. I found I had to run the truck every 2-3 days or I had to jump start it and it takes hours to jump start with a Ford Focus.

I could only read 12.5 volts at the batteries with the truck running and yet I could read almost 14 volts at the Alternator and at the Starter stud. I could not figure how I was dropping 1.5 volts on the 4 foot batter to starter cable.

At a check up at Black Hills Volvo in Rapid City, the dealer found a poor connection on the wire connection to the Alternator. With a new end I was seeing the proper voltage at the batteries.

I had been using a digital meter and one of the things a digital meter can read is an AC component o a DC voltage. Apparently the poor connection was passing the AC component but not all the DC current. Don;t discount cleaning connections.

Yup, getting the voltage there is easy, getting enough current (amps) to charge the batteries is another story. Checking and cleaning connections and belts is the first place to start.

UPDATE:

I had the batteries tested out and they tested okay (which they should be since we keep them on the Battery Minder whenever parked). I also had the connections all cleaned and had the alternator checked out. It appears the alternator is on its way to full failure, so it's being replaced tomorrow, and we should be back on the road.

Yeah, 570k miles seems a short life for an alternator :P , but I s'pose the new one should hang in there for another 570k. They're charging me $375 for the part and then labor.

Sounds like a pretty good price. Now you know it's good to go.
