  1. I have often thought of the EMT option in the past for extended travel and camping including very remote BLM areas of the west and in the end decided on a 28 foot TT towed behind my Dodge Ram pickups. Cheers and good luck to you. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1734514206850757&type=3 My mission is complete and successful!!!!!!

  3. I live on north side of Lake Tahoe and drive those mountain roads extensively plus occasional towing of a TT. There are a some highways I avoid especially when towing and/or night driving and take another longer also scenic route. Interstate 80 from Reno to Sacramento over Donner Pass is normally pleasant drive and easy tow except for inclement weather or big wrecks bringing traffic to a standstill for many miles and hours. This has happened to me twice in 5 years. When towing the John Day Highway 26 in Oregon the rear of my TT was hanging out over thin air as I rounded the curves in places in the canyon areas with no shoulders or retaining walls. Very narrow to me two lane road. My trailer did not sway but bounced quite a bit on washboard and bad roads but I got use to it. When first towing in mountains of Oregon, California and rockies I made very good use of Google and Bing maps street view feature. Very helpful along with a trucker's mountain road/grade directory and still use all this today. Cheers Retired Acct & SEC CFP. 4. Thanks bigjim. The article confirmed what I said about having higher number axle ratio for towing heavy trailers and my previous comment was based upon reading the comments of RVers who have towed very heavy trailers and 5th wheels with HD pickups. "If you are constantly towing, the highest axle gear ratio possible is what you're after. The choice of a numerically higher axle ratio will only knock off about 1 mile per gallon from the truck's fuel economy. But since pickup truck fuel efficiency is low to begin with, even a 1 mpg reduction is significant". Sounds like they afford the extra gas cost. "Before you leave for the dealership, take a moment to think about how you're going to use the truck. When in doubt, default to a higher numerical axle ratio. While it will lower your fuel economy slightly, it will also mean you will be more comfortable while hauling and towing over long distances." They may change their minds and decide on longer trips and/or even larger trailer in future.
  5. Well axle ratio makes for a huge difference in towing ability especially heavy trailers in steep mountains or on rough 4X4 type off road conditions. For instance my Dodge Ram 2500 HD V10 truck had the 4.10 axle ratio I towed a 4500 to 5000 lb trailer with ease in the rockies and west coast mountains. Of course my trailer was not considered heavy or long. My two rams 1500 had only a 3.55 axle ratio and would tow same trailer in flatlands of Texas only. Of course the V8 engines were only 5.2 and 5.9 whereas the V10 was 8.0L. My V10 also came with the 3500 HD rear axle for the truck camper package. The 2500 diesel 6.6L is plenty powerful truck for towing many heavy trailers and 5th wheels and a higher axle ratio would also add extra hard grunt work (strength) for towing such as starting your tow from a standing start uphill and in soft terrain. "Before you leave for the dealership, take a moment to think about how you're going to use the truck. When in doubt, default to a higher numerical axle ratio. You can find axle ratio of your truck on the drivers door post in many trucks and stamped on rear axle ( differential cover) of many trucks. P.S. I think many HD 2500 and 3500 trucks comes with at least a 3.96 ratio and with diesel power this would be almost perfect but more is always better.
  6. Electricians are expected to have expensive latest greatest tools of the trade however not all RVers have a need for those expensive sophisticated gadgets sport depending on type of RV used. No cheers for My mission is complete and successful!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. I have had 3 dodge rams including HD 2500 V10 and loved all of them. Towed several types of trailers including in the mountains of western usa + rockies. Great tow trucks but the new fords really impress the **** out of me.
  8. In case your display stops working or becomes inaccurate there is a cheap voltage read out tester that I bought at the auto parts store. Has one prong for negative and the other for positive that you touch to the battery post. The readout in green shows 12.5 and yellow as low when below 12.5 and then red for very low. When generator is running it will also show status of generator and if it is charging the battery. Very small tester that fits inside a small sandwich zip lock bag. Can use as backup only and can use I would think on tongue mounted RV battery/s as well as truck battery. My display in the TT became inaccurate and unreliable. This little tester unit has saved me from battery failures out in the boonies several times. Cheers and Happy Trails. Retired Acct & SEC CFP. 9. In all my travels across the western USA from Texas to west coast over several years I have not needed any dealer work done on my TT thankfully. Many if not most RVers travel great distances for extended periods of time from their selling dealer home location so this puts them in nearly impossible situation for warranty work on their unit I would think. I was able to do my own small repairs and avoid expensive dealer non warranty work. In visiting the several RV dealers for spare parts including big and small mom and pop dealers I have found them to all be smart alecks and rude and is reason I am Amazon Prime customer and I tell them this as I leave their store. I don't miss them at all. One useful RV dealer in Reno did pay me a very good price for my used TT only because of Burning Man festival in the BR. Did I say I love AP!!!!! Cheers to many and jeers to a few as I was born lucky. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1739912699644241&type=3 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1735404620095049&type=3 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1735592953409549&type=3
  10. Please note I am not a Ford truck driver but maybe soon. Newer 150s have built in generators and now these added new features. https://www.foxnews.com/auto/ford-f-150-built-in-scales-payload-weight Retired Acct & SEC CFP. 13. For the very few if any who may be affected Burning Man is again cancelled for the second year due to Covid according to local Reno newspaper a few days ago. As this is also an RV event with 80,000 members I am posting this as a PSA only. Several times a year I camp on BLM land close to the BR desert with sometimes a great view of the BR from mountains overlooking the area. Very remote and isolated most of the year with only a few cars seen on the 65 mile drive from Nixon to Gerlach (nearly a ghost town) on my very recent visit. Link to this news is easily found by anyone interested. BM propaganda that is probably true claim that many of their members are professional and wealthy people from all over the world. I have no interest in this event and normally don't camp in the desert in summer heat. Cheers to many and jeers to some. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1739912699644241&type=3 Capt. 14. Parts of the movie were filmed in northern Nevada near Reno. One scene was at an RV park at Wadsworth that is part of the large Paiute Nation Pyramid Lake reservation. I pass thru there frequently on the way for fishing at Pyramid lake. 15. My Ram 2500 HD V10 8.0L gasser was a towing monster in the Rockies and west coast mountains. It was 4X4 with the 3500 rear axle for camper package. I also owned two 1500s a 5.2 and 5.9 that gave me excellent towing service with no issues. Towed 5000 lb TT with all. Used the 1500s for flatlands towing only. Yes I could easily afford the gas for the V10 hog. Cheers to some and jeers to others. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1739912699644241&type=3
  16. When I made a return trip from Oregon around May 2018 on 101 through the Red Woods SP area the road was under heavy repair/construction in more than a few locations and it was down to single lane, very rough at times very narrow at other times. It was early Sunday morning in heavy fog so lucky for me no traffic or construction crews but lots of machinery on the shoulder. This time I was only towing a 5X8 Uhaul so no great problem. Being an experienced RVer I am sure you will get latest road condition report before heading out. Happy Trails to some but not all. Retired Acct & SEC CFP. 18. Agesilaus I see you do same thing as RV with your evidence link to support your statement. I doubt if few including me really care. And like I said "maybe someday". ZZZZZs One cool cat waiting on a ride to the Vegas Strip.
  19. As usual RV you support your statements on technical and important issues with solid evidence. You still the winner sport. Cheers and Grins all around. Capt. Lucky. P.S. I am a fusion fan and maybe someday
  20. In 2010 to 2012 I traveled and camped extensively through out the great scenic and friendly state of Oregon including most of the coastal area with my gasser V10 truck towing a TT. Everywhere including small rural towns the fueling guys and gals were fast and friendly, helpful and often refused my offered tips. Yes I could afford to tip and the gas. No self fueling allowed then at any of the locations I stopped at. No problems and I checked my gas cap after each refueling. I enjoyed their service. Did another return great trip to the state in 2018 and will be going again soon to central and coastal Oregon. No more trips to Portland for me though. 21. Just a note that I have a very aggressive email spam filter and may not receive messages from some forum members. I check my spam folder only infrequently. .
  22. My reply to agesilaus. Well many expert tech people believe that sport. I am not one of those non tech people who believe that because now retired I only care about my fun stuff such as fishing, camping, outdoor scenic activities in western USA, etc. Other people are paid big money to worry and solve any and all problems. As one famous actor said in a movie "I don't care". By the way a close family friend who was an Army Warrant Officer with the AEC was assigned to the Chicago Stadium atomic bomb research/design project known as the Manhattan Project. This info is on the Wikipedia website using simple first grade Google search.
  23. Well let us see now we sent men to the moon, split the atom, invented the A Bomb, etc.,etc. Lot of smart people out there, there. 24. Well said RV and I will continue masking for foreseeable future. Each time I visit the VA hospital/clinics such as eye, dental and PC they test me for Covid and my temp is taken several times a week at local casinos. Looking good from my position. The Mask Bandit.
