  1. March 29, 2021, 11:36 a.m. ET The coronavirus vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are proving highly effective at preventing symptomatic and asymptomatic infections under real-world conditions, federal health researchers reported on Monday. Consistent with clinical trial data, a two-dose regimen prevented 90 percent of infections by two weeks after the second shot. One dose prevented 80 percent of infections by two weeks after vaccination. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/29/world/pfizer-moderna-covid-vaccines-infection.html --------------------- I'm 72 years old and received my second (Pfizer) shot last Friday morning. I experienced very mild pain in my arm the next morning, but no bruising. All pain was gone for me this morning. If you haven't been vaccinated, please do so, as soon as you are able to.
  2. I served as a juror, on a Federal case, about 15 years ago. The jury selection process seemed to be very similar to Connecticut's process for state trials. It was a trial for an inmate of the Danbury Federal Correctional Institution that lasted 3 days. He was accused of murder and was pleading self-defense. I didn't learn much from the the attorneys from either side. But our private discussions in the jury room were a real learning experience for me. After about 12 hours of deliberations, we reached a consensus: guilty. For me, some of the justifications for a not-guilty vote were eye-opening. I gained some important insights and found the experience valuable.
  3. You deserve to be honored! Thank you for serving your country. I realize that means me, and all those I care deeply about. I sense that you are proud of what you've done - and should be!
  4. Try to remain focused astex ... You started this "Polk Co. Jury Duty" topic with a single question: "Does Polk Co. chose based on registered to vote? If so I may not be able to register to vote..... " What-abouts are irrelevant. If you claim Texas to be your domicile, you agree to Texas's jury selection rules.
  5. Actually, Barb, I refuse to wallow in the mud with you on this. Here are the facts: It's not OK to change domiciles and lie about facts or future intent. It is OK to take advantage jury selection rules (like age thresholds) "What about" things are irrelevant. Things like: "They get yearly bridge fee for vehicles that don't use the bridges, they get federal money based upon population even though we aren't costing them a thing.". These have nothing to do with jury duty.
  6. The subject of this thread is "Polk Co. Jury Duty' I'm pushing back on narratives, that try to justify personal immunity from State and/or Federal jury duty. To me, what-abouts are irrelevant.
  7. You do realize, that there is a difference between a justification and rationalization, right? IMO, I'm a Texan (wink, wink), that is perpetually out of state, is not a justification for escaping State and Federal jury duty. -------------------- "How much time have you spent in Livingston? What have you done locally to establish ties to the city? How much time do you plan to spend in Texas? Sometimes, the response is an immediate shrug of the shoulders. If they explain to me that they don’t plan to spend any time in Texas, I tell them about case law, which says to establish domicile in a new state, you must spend time in that state, and you must show that you 'intend to make that state your home.'" https://www.escapees.com/the-ten-commandments-of-texas-domicile/
  8. No I haven't. But I have been called for jury duty 4 times and served once on a Federal case for 3 days. I consider it a duty of citizenship to do so and I'm pleased to have served. 3+ weeks and drive 1000+ miles would obviously be costly. Presumably, as a TX resident, you do spend some time in Texas. Have you inquired about how to serve when your in, or close to Texas?
  9. Congrats. I just googled (as an anonymous user) the latin phrase, and your post was the #3 hit. πŸ™‚
  10. "So, I ask the collective wisdom of this group, am I the only one who's ever done this? " I have no wisdom to add. But thanks for the head's up. My inclination is that for long, true single lane (without a driveable shoulder), I would stop, put it in neutral and sit for a bit until I had a big gap in front of me. Then close the gap and repeat. Unfortunately, if there is a driveable shoulder, or multiple lanes that are congested, leaving a big gap in front, is probably a poor approach. It seems to me, like creeping in 1st gear and occasionally shifting into neutral, with an eventual stop, is the only viable solution. But maybe I'm wrong.
  11. Both methods are "dead or alive" tests. One uses time and the other uses bubbles. My suspicion is that humidity and packaging of the contents of the opened container affects potency. Assuming that bubbling only has two states seems unlikely. Is a warm water slurry of baking powder restricted to vigorously bubbling, or not bubbling at all? I suspect bubbling (and potency) declines over time and the rate depends on packaging and relative humidity of the air it is stored in. My guess is that the degree of bubbling provides an indication of potency. Alas, I was not able to find a bubbling metric or scale :-).
  12. Kirk beat me to it. I concluded the same. Testing is likely to be the best approach, since the average humidity across geography and seasons varies widely as does the permeability of the baking powder container and how often it is opened. I chose a source that explained it more simply: "To test if baking powder has gone bad, put a teaspoon in a half cup of hot water. If it bubbles, bake away. If not, head to the store." It also appears, than unlike baking powder, baking soda has an indefinite shelf life.
  13. Unlike Jay, I have no professional cooking experience and I did not know that baking soda had a very limited shelf life. Here's a summary of a bit of web research I did: Baking powder includes an acid. It only needs a liquid to become activated. But it has a limited shelf life and is sensitive to humidity. It has a shelf life of between six months to one year. Baking soda requires an acid and a liquid to become activated to help baked goods rise. Baking soda has an indefinite shelf life. -------------- I was curious why baking soda is not sold in tins, perhaps with desiccant packet included. My guess was that that practice would reduce supplier revenue and profit. So I googled: baking soda in a box or tin Here was the first hit: https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-store-baking-soda/
  14. We "may get" is almost always irrefutable. Real life is all about the odds. Let's have a little fun. I'll give you 5 to 1 odds, on a bet size, of your choosing, up to $1,000. I'll be betting that the monthly US inflation rate, will not reach 10% , at any time, thru January of 2025. How much do you want to bet (put into an escrow account)?
  15. We appear to live in different (thought) worlds. Given today's interest rates, the potential loss of return on a small refund is trivial to me. The refund is for my checking account, not my investment portfolio. I trust that your advice was meant to be helpful. πŸ™‚
  16. I just got off the phone with the IRS robo-supporter. It asked me my SSN, Filing Status and amount of last years refund. Then it immediately answered with: "Your return is still being processed" and hung up. Sure glad they have a customer "support" line. 😞 P.S. I filed electronically on Feb 11
  17. My IRS refund, usually arrives promptly. For me, it's a bit slow this year. I filed electronically on Feb 11 and my current status, according to https://www.irs.gov/refunds is : "Your tax return is still being processed." 😞
  18. Barb - I don't think he meant to ask a question. To me he made a statement - he'd rather take any of the 3 vaccines than none.
  19. I choose not to participate in this debate. But I do have a specific suggestion that some may find useful. I purchased a few 3M N95 masks, but other than trying one on, I've never used them. Saving them for any bad situations I need to endure like a round-trip flight from Connecticut to California. I've tried 6 mask types: N95, cloth, surgeon and 3 brands of KN95 masks. I chose the one I felt was the best for me and my relatives and purchased several packages of 10. I chose them because they have an interior Meltblown polypropylene layer (like 3M N95's) sandwiched between two outer layers. I chose the ear loop style rather than the elastic bands style. They are priced at about $1 a piece for a pack of 10. The masks fit my face very well. But if you have a small head, they may be too large (that was true for one friend of mine). The only relationship I have with the company is that I've purchased 60 of their masks. https://bonafidemasks.com/face-masks/kn95-respirator-face-masks/
  20. Me too. I chose to not participate, because I was unable to envision a path that would advance greater understanding or consensus. If this thread fostered a small group, in a face-to-face discussion, I suspect there would be a better chance of narrowing the gap in our opinions.
  21. My thanks too! Just ordered mine. ☺️
  22. Still no proof. What's your source. I already cited mine. It was https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/ ---------------- CA Tot Cases / 1M = 83,546 FL Tot Cases / 1M = 81,147 83546/81147 == 1.029 3% percent is not almost double.
  23. Where is your proof that Florida has less than half the infection rate of California? My guess is that the source you used did not adjust for population. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/
  24. This seems to be asserting that the agreed upon value, in a stated value policy, is irrelevant. That opinion seems to be very unlikely to me. Please clarify.
