Update on Dutch & Di

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I finally feel up to giving you an update on Dutch & me. We have had a pretty horrific month but are recovering--We Will Prevail!!!

Dutch went in to the hospital on April 9th for knee replacement surgery. The surgery went well but they could not get him to coherent to do PT and we could not get him to stay out of A-Fib--great, just what we need--both of us in A-Fib at the same time.

After a week of me by his side, they transferred him to a rehabilitation center back in Casa Grande so I was able to grab an hour or 2 of sleep once in awhile. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning so I was moving very slowly but I was moving. After 4 days of this, Dutch called me at midnight saying "something is wrong". I ran over and we monitored him for several hours. We finally called the ambulance and I followed him to the hospital ER. As they were working on him, he saw me slump down. I was having a stroke and they airlifted me to the #1 trauma center in Phoenix AZ. They brought Dutch up an hour later in the ambulance as this ER didn't have what Dutch needed.

I woke the next day to the Dr. calling me his "Miracle Girl". When I questioned him, he said I was 19 minutes from a feeding tube--OK so maybe I am lucky afterall. They had removed a clot from my carotid artery {which I had just had an ultra sound on 2 weeks earlier}. Fortunately, they told me I made a complete recovery!!!

They discharged me and I went up to get Dutch to bring him home and they decided to not discharge him for another 3 days so I just slept at his side. The doctor did not like the swelling in Dutch's leg so ordered an ultra sound and found a blood clot. Yikes! They put in an "umbrella" via the groin, which allows the blood to go through but not the clot. Whew. We had to take a "transport company" back to Casa as we had no truck with us.

Once home, we worked hard to do his exercises and get him into out patient PT 3 times a week. After making several medication dosage changes, I feel pretty confident we will both get back to our old selves in maybe another month. We had to renew here until June 1st but the heat has been pretty bearable overall with a nice cool day today.

Oh yeah, just to make it interesting, Dutch came down with a chest cold

I'm looking forward to slowly start interacting with everyone again as I get my stamina back. I worked as hard as I could to take care of my customers and just about all were very understanding.

Hugs, Di

Yikes! Any SINGLE facet of that story would be a lot to deal with let alone the combination. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

You make me feel fortunate as thus far we have only experienced one of us down at a time. Pam seems to be the "medical girl" of our operation but I'll not complain of being care giver as it sure beats being "co-patients" as you two have been!

Dutch and Di - Sorry to hear about all the "excitement" but glad you're on the mend. Only know you through reading your posts, but agree with J6Pack about your wonderful attitude. Best of luck, and know that you will be in many prayers from you internet friends.

God's Peace.

Dang.......at least it sounds like a positive outcome. That's way to much to deal with all at once. Good job you two.

Makes me think of the old saying...If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Well, we are still in Casa Grande, AZ. Dutch, knee surgery wise, has been cleared and is looking forward to being able to golf in another 4 weeks. His stamina and strength are slowly coming back but not fast enough for him. Heart wise, he will always be in and out of A-Fib and he has to work on not "working" so hard which should do the trick.

He did pick up an infection in the hospital that was just found so we are just starting on meds that should make him "all better" in a week or so--we hope!

My A-Fib seems to be under control and I thought I was in the clear but I was told on Thursday that I need a few more tests next week. I've got my fingers crossed for good results. My goal this weekend is to get out and do more walking to build up my strength.

We still hope to get back to RV'ing the beginning of June but we just don't know for sure yet.

We want to wish those who can travel; safe travels a very Happy Memorial Day! We hope to see you all on the road soon.

Thank you all for the cards that arrived in our last several mail batches. Hugs, Di
