lappir
Have you considered upgrading the "Infotainment System"? That's what I did and have Android Auto mirrored to the device. It was fairly in expensive less than $400 installed. Unfortunately I upgraded to an iPhone just a few months after. I think I can still use my Android phone on WIFI in the truck, but haven't tried it yet. There are much more expensive and said to be wireless that communicate both Android Auto and Carplay. kb0zke
Yes, we have considered upgrading the truck's system. That's what got us talking about an RV GPS. Upgrading the truck's system would cost around $200 or so and would have it updated to that point. A new road or an existing road that closed the next week wouldn't be in the system. Also, the truck's system is (I think) the same as what we had in the Lincoln MKT, so it doesn't consider towing a trailer. Kirk, thank you for your recommendation. We'll check it out. Mine is an older model too, not that old but I did have some issues with one before I did a map update. sandsys
If you buy a Garmin be sure to get one with the Lifetime Maps option. Keeping it up to date is critical to its usefulness. I updated ours twice a year--spring and fall. it still didn't always have new streets because it takes time for those to be added. Oops. But good they do that now. I never understood why anyone would buy one without updating capabilities. That does indicate how long they last, though, as I haven't needed to buy one since 2008. Ray,IN
On 2/22/2024 at 11:00 PM, kb0zke said: Reviving an old topic. We're looking to get a stand-alone GPS. As some mentioned, the navigation system that comes with new cars/trucks is good as of when it was installed, but over time new roads are built and existing roads are straightened, which sometimes leaves us "driving" off the road. The system doesn't quite know what to do with that. The phone navigation works well in a car, less so with a pickup, and a lot less well with an RV. What's the current thinking about a good GPS? We have a pickup towing a 40' travel trailer. I used to have Rand Mcnally GPS' but their lifetime maps timed-out @ 3 years. So, I bought a cheap OHREX Chinese trucker GPS off Amazon for $70. It has been entirely accurate here in the lower 48 for 3 years now. Maps updates must be purchased and come on an SD card for something like $26 ea.
