Yeah... sure...$50 wouldn't even pay for the sales tax on the system I was looking at....

WOW....you know you get what you pay for and it's 2019.

X'lnt info.....(success story) from -  CARLOS!

IMO - you did well  - appears you *DID* get what you paid for.......even if it "wouldn't even" cover the sales tax for RT's  choice!

Go ahead and laugh it off....a dashcam is not the same as a forward collision warning and lane assistance system....

Hmm,   it's certainly cheap... I'll give you that. But, not very elegant.... looks like an old transistor radio from the 1960s.  Glad it's working for you. I hope you have this securely fastened while you are moving.

Again, you're talking apples and oranges...as I said before,  the system I was thinking about was more than a dashcam .  It was a forward collision warning system... sorry, you just don't get it..... Very sad.

Perhaps if you had capitalized the name in your post, left out the space, and included a link, we might have had a better idea what you were referring to...

We don't have dash cams in or on any of our vehicles.  Most of them are simply showing a certain view out the front of your vehicle.

If you are involved in a serious crash and an actual complete reconstruction is completed by police then they will pretty much know how fast you were going, how fast the other guy was going, who turned which way, and who did what when.

I'm not saying there isn't probably minor situations where it could come in handy.  I guess if you are that worried about any type of traffic incident that may turn into a "he said, she said" then maybe go out and buy one.

We had a situation where someone turned left in front of us and said he had a green light. All of the witnesses agreed that he did not. He still sued us. We’re still waiting on the case but because no one can say 100% that they seen the light, it’s our word against theirs. A dash cam would have resolved this immediately by providing unquestionably prof of the light. All I can say is, people lie. A video may only capture one or two angles but you may only need one.

Many cars are beginning to offer dash cams built in. I had add-on dash cams in my last two cars. Our Tesla Model Y has dash cams, cabin cam, backup cam, and sentry mode, built in standard. It uses all its cams 360° around. My back up camera shows the left and right views under the main straight back view.

I set up a 128GB Flash drive for it and have it set for saving on my honking the horn. :

Nice. Does it record so many seconds before you hit your horn also when activated?

The Tesla camera recording is limited and fraught with problems.  I have a model 3 LR.  I've spent a lot of time messing with the cameras and the video.  I've also managed to see a number of interesting incidents while driving it, and then found that the video wasn't there when I went to get it.  For this reason, I now have a Raspberry Pi with the Teslacam Pi software doing the recording in the car, and uploading/storing it.

While you can optionally set the car to save the last five (or so) minutes of video if you honk or press the save button, it's not always reliable.  Several times I got a video where the last file actually ended just before the horn/save, and therefore, missed the actual event.  The Sentry will keep recording to "recent clips" so if you wanted to get something and didn't hit save, it will be gone.  This became an issue when I found out that a neighbor had a security issue at his house, and I would have had the video to help, because I noticed the problem person getting into his car as I came home.  But it didn't seem important enough to save at the time.  Overnight, Sentry had overwritten it (it does so every HOUR--only saves one hour).

Sometimes there are just gaps in recordings.  Last week I saw something pretty funny, and decided to grab the video when I got home.  There was about 35 minutes of just missing video.  Which the Tesla forums say basically, "yeah that happens."  Great.

Here's one that did work...idiots everywhere.

Oh, also, the forums seem to agree that flash drives are most error prone.  They are not intended to be written to at the rate the car does, and constantly erased.  They don't seem to have any reliable wear leveling.  The common recommendation is to use either an SSD (the car will support it fine), or a dashcam-specific micro SD card in an adapter.  I have a 256GB Samsung Endurance video-specific micro SD in the Pi.

Tesla cam is for sure a "barely there" afterthought from Tesla.  Luckily, nearly everything else about the car is absolutely awesome.

The few times I looked my flash drive was fine. They just updated the whole system and I'll have to relearn it. Gaps you bet.

I'll check into that as I have several spare smallish SSDs already in USB 3.0 enclosures I for which have no use.

As you know they've been steadily updating and adding features to the whole camera systems from the backup cam to show left and right, and then adding a button so I can turn on the backup cameras while driving forward. And the ability to watch in the car. That is the beauty of OTA (Over The Air) updates, the hardware is there. Maybe we'll see more fixes.

I defer to Carlos as I hadn't messed with my system at all save a peek to see if it was recording and it was. I'll have to go through it all again and replace the flash drive, which is a USB A not a USB C. I'll have to look into USB C flash drives which don't have the USB A speed and data limits.

If your car has USB-A, then it really won't matter much, but A is capable of everything the car can use anyway.  My M3 is a 2019 with the A ports.

By default, save on honk is off.  But you can always save with the screen icon, and it will save if a collision is detected or motion is detected when parked.  Sentry is super sensitive.  I'm tired of watching videos of lizards walking on my car.  It was cute once.  Sentry also puts a monster load on your memory device, because it's recording 24/7, no matter what.  And then it simply moves event files to another folder, or deletes non-event files.  This is unlike your standard dashcam that records only while driving, and some record AFTER detected motion while parked but do not record all the time.

But again, a super important thing to remember is that without some sort of third party add-on like the Pi, the car will always erase anything older than an hour unless saved.  Which is so damn dumb.  The basic $80 dashcam in my other car just keeps saving days of stuff until the card is full.

Also worth noting...  The interior camera is not recorded except for a collision or an auto-braking event.  There is NO AUDIO, unlike every other dashcam on the market.  The left and right repeater (fender) cameras are recorded, but NOT the B-pillar camera.

Here's another very important programmable feature.

I just checked Carlos, my 2020 Model Y has one USB A and once USB C in the front of the center console where the flash drive goes, a very fast Patriot USB A 3.1 128GB drive.

The rear passengers have two USB C ports in the middle on the back of the console.

USB C data and transfer speeds are very fast. If Tesla switched to them they would likely have wired for both PD for charging and DATA for the Cam functions with the attached drive. I guess I might have to go read some more on Teslarati pages for specs of the installed USB C ports.

These cars are full of features I discover every time I talk with fellow owners and on You Tube.

Yeah, in 20 they started putting in C, lucky you.  My phone's magnetic charger hates the Tesla.  It's C only, with an A to C adapter, and fails to charge on the first drive every day.  WTF!  Yes, tried four different adapters.  Small pain.

The rear USB ports are charge only on the 3, which is likely also true on the Y.  No media, no recording.

Earlier USB ports were USB 2.0 according to a thread I jut read but the USB C ports on the newer ones have more Amps for charging in the back and the front.

I will have to research a bit more and find out.

I did find this which indicated the ports are very different from the Model 3 ports prior to the Y.

"Jun 22, 2020

We're happy to say that we have worked through many of the issues we had with the Model Y ports. Why was the Model Y more difficult? The internal engineering and power distribution/delivery, was completely different from the Model 3, and exhibited very unique behavior with the USB C ports. As such, as we had to work on new PCB boards and electronics, and test countless board after another to create a perfect working hub."

Yeah, I see 2.0 speeds, and right under 2.1 amps max with my USB power tester.  But...my phone only actually gets a true 1.9.  Meanwhile my Jeep feeds almost 3a (USB-C).  So to overcome this, I picked up a generic A/C hub that has a 12v power input, and I'll power that directly to get max charge and more ports.  The Pi also powers right off its port.

The wife also wants to plug in a game controller.  Sheesh.

The USB C Ports are set for the PD power specs so should be fine for anything I need. Mine was a June factory build so should have the latest thus far hardware wise.

I forgot I was a member of the Tesla Motor Club until today.

I've been setting up all new systems here and deciding which ones I am going to sell. Since we are staying mostly home for the duration of the pandemic I don't drive but to the Commissary and to Home Depot and Best Buy for our new phones we picked up last week and since they only had one in stock, got the second yesterday.

So many toys, so much system build options -

That's what you meant earlier mentioning Pi! Yes I already bookmarked it for later. Way back when, I bought one of the first Raspberry Pi the original. I may give it a try if the newer USB C circuits are no improvement. I did use the wireless charging at first but our Motorola phones needed the battery backs which we have but makes them too fat. I also had one of the adapters that are a pad that goes under the case and did a fine job but they ran hot. So I just put a USB C to USB C new cable in its place run through the gap in the console ids just fine when needed. But our Motos have two day batteries and I have never needed the charger.

So I just might try the Pi system you linked to. I do park in my garage where the Tesla is 20 feet from the WiFi router, and also have a 50 Amp charging outlet there.

All good info. Now I can insure my dashcam does no lose clips if the USB C have the same issues.
