lockmup68
So wanted to charge up the batts before I wired them all in, so I've been taking time charging one at a time in the various campgrounds over last 3 weeks. My bro-in-law came over the other night and said he heard a hissing sound. I had the battery sitting on a board under the 5th overhang. It was hot, and I had left this one in the box and thought maybe it was the box and styrofoam packing. It was late, so I simply unplugged the charger and went back to bed. In the morning I noticed the charger wasn't "clicked" all the way over to 6v from 12v. So I guess I was 12v charging a 6v battery. Toasted it, was all bloated and I took it to the battery recycler and told them to be careful. Chunk of change down the tube. Duh....So don't do that. 2003 International Eagle 9200i, Cummins ISX, Freedomline 2007 Teton Scottsdale XT4

beyerjf
You are very lucky it didn't blow. With the charger on it providing a spark and significant hydrogen gas in the immediate vicinity. We all are guilty of not respecting the hazards that batteries represent. Did I tell you about the time.... Did I tell you about the time.... Wow, you ARE lucky. I'd get to a Casino. I've been in the same "space" as a battery that blew up. It is very, very UGLY and can have catastrophic results. In my case I was protected (serendipitously) by a stem wall. That wall was COVERED with battery acid and pieces. lockmup68
Arrow was pointing to 6v, but it hadn't actually clicked over in the slot. Yes, we were lucky. maveric
Wish I had read this last night.... I put the battery from our pop-up on the charger last night....and just remembered it was on there when I read this. Have to go home and turn it off. edit... Seems my charger drops to 2 amp trickle when fully charged. Good thing, since I had left it on 15 amp. justRich
Not so lucky. I'm not sure why this happened - it occurred while I was away. I found it like that when I opened the battery compartment. It still gave a 12 volt reading with a volt meter. ~Rich
JCZ
Very, very lucky! Reminds me when I was a kid and my parents owned several auto wrecking yards (everybody else called them junk yards. LOL). One of the workers had a charger hooked up to a battery that was still in the car, hood open. We were in the shop when it sounded like a bomb went off right outside the door. I remember they turned off the charger and used a water hose to rinse the car, motor, everything. I didn't know why at the time, they were using water. Within a few days, it started becoming very clear why they were using the hose. The fenders, even on top of the hood, over the top of the car and the fender wells on the inside, firewall, etc. begin to blister and in short order was right down to the metal and begin rusting by the fall. That car never looked right again. It was relegated to us kids to drive in the junk yard. LOL I can only imagine what it would have done to the front of your 5er (and your truck, if it were parked close by). You got off cheap if it was just the cost of the battery. 2017 Grand Design Momentum 376TH pulled by a 2014 Ford F-350 Lariat, FX-4, dually, longbed
