  1. Do you really think there was that much weight shift? The tow truck is carrying most of the rear axles weight. And judging from the pictures it's not like he towed it far enough to matter.
  2. Me too. Welded a washer on the release pin handle too and made a tool for it also.
  3. I know that Brad...but sometimes I need to get an early start to get outta town before they notice I'm gone. Hey, they actually are paying me more to stay home than they were paying me to go to work. I gotta do something with the extra money Dennis, yes, I have the lights in both positions in the fog/driving lights. I got all 4 lights (headlights and fog lights) on Amazon as a "set". It came with ALL the bulbs for the set. I got the set for $409. HERE is the listing.
  4. It's not the old frame they want, Lou. They want that old, pre emissions, engine with a new truck and frame around it

    Smart car help?

Chief, my tires have always worn evenly. Maybe I weigh more than you?

    Applying Decals

For the guy applying the decals or for locating a helper?
  7. I installed new Depo brand headlights and driving lights yesterday. The new ones went in easy enough but getting the old ones out was a pain in the butt. They all use several metal "nuts" held by the plastic housing and plain old bolts. After 18 years the rust sort of takes over. The hardest one was the drivers side fog light. I literally cut the plastic housing from the front so I could access the "nuts" and hold them with a pair of vice grips in order to remove the bolts. I put in all new bolts and used some anti-seize on them. I'm gonna keep an eye on them for a while to make sure the anti-seize doesn't let the bolts loosen up. The new lights came with all the bulbs installed but I am tempted to see what a set of LED headlights would look like. Anyone tried them??
  8. So after watching the video it sounds like the EPA hasn't moved up there deadline but the manufacturers just aren't going to build 2020 gliders? So not a loss in court but out maneuvered by the truck makers?
  9. Carl, I'm confused. The only things I find on the subject were dated one year ago, and they all basically say the same thing. "end of next year" means the end of THIS year....so another 6 months, and then they can only build 300 trucks. Of course I have no idea how many they are selling now. Limiting them to 300 a year might be a death warrant. You can read the article HERE. Can you post a link to this video?? Thanks
  10. I just picked my truck up from Herrin Welding today. The box is done....I've got to clean up the carbon from being run with a broken exhaust, wire it up and then get the bed liner applied to it and the bed and that project will be done. 1 down, 467 million projects to go. I couldn't pass up that commercial grade 7.5kw Onan QD. Pictures here
  11. If the water intrusion was through cracked caulk then I would bet your floor is rotten also. If that is the case, rebuilding the slide is about the only option you have.
  12. Throw away all those pages from CFR 49... They are not applicable to anything you want to do. They will only confuse the clerks at the tax office (something you do not want to do. they are already confused enough). Next year, after being registered as a MH you can simply get a standard "vehicle inspection" at any inspection station. That $40 inspection isn't what you will need ever again. You do not need a bed or a deck. Exile had a bunch of people that were incapable of reading, comprehending and/or making a decision on their own. Hopefully your county has more intelligent people than that. You never mentioned what county you are in, not that it really makes a difference. Walk in and tell them "I've got everything the books says I need, are you ready?". Show them what you have and hopefully they will be capable of reading their own material. It isa their book. They wrote the rules. How hard should it be? The fact that they have never done it before is a lame excuse. If you have issues, PM Exile or me and we can supply you with the name of the people in Austin that got the mess straightened out with his county. They were slow as molasses but they got it done. Exile has a lot more patience than I would have.
  13. You dont need a "dot" inspection and did you try to contact Exile like was discussed in your previous thread?
  14. Don't do it. Register your rig as a MH to begin with. There are plenty of people that can walk you through the process of registering in Texas. Like Chad said, the odds of getting a citation are slim but Texas says a truck needs a CDL, a MH is exempt from CDL. Section 522.003 defines a "Commercial Motor Vehicle" as: a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used to transport passengers or property that: (A) has a gross combination weight or a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, including a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight or a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds; (B) has a gross vehicle weight or a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds; That is you if you are driving an HDT.. Section 522.004 says the following are exempt... #1,2,3 and (4) a recreational vehicle that is driven for personal use; It also defines a recreational vehicle as: a motor vehicle primarily designed as temporary living quarters for recreational camping or travel use. The term includes a travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, and motor home. So technically as long as you are towing a travel trailer or are a motor home you are exempt from CDL. Once you unhitch your "truck" from your travel trailer you will need a CDL. Again, the odds of getting a ticket are rare, and I have heard rumor (don't bother to keep up with the legal updates since I retired a month ago) that the legislature has changed that language to include any personal truck, but the law hasn't changed at this point in time. So why bother chancing it? Register it properly the first time and you won't have to worry about changing it later for any reason.
  15. 10 years ago, at a rally, several of us were looking at a new demo trailer. Someone wondered, out loud, "I wonder what's in this compartment". Everyone else in the group pulled out their keys, and we looked in the compartment. Of course we locked it back when we were done being nosy.
  16. https://www.taninautoelectronix.com/ This is the guy I used to repair mine. If I recall someone told me he doesn't do older model Volvos (Gen1) but I am not sure. Worth a phone call..
  17. $Spot, somehow I misunderstood your first post...and missed the word "trailer". My trailer is registered for 22500 lbs, which is empty weight plus carrying capacity as stated on the manufacturers tag on the hitch (also on the Certificate of Manufacture, since I bought new). Now, my Volvo is registered for 18000 lbs which was empty weight (as per a scale ticket) plus whatever the heaviest load I expected to carry and then rounded up to the max weight allowed in that weight category. Sorry for any confusion.
  18. Dave get the most expensive one. It is bound to be made better than the cheaper ones, even if they are the same manufacturer..... at least that is what they want you to believe.
  19. Texas uses gross vehicle weight (not gross vehicle weight RATING) plus heaviest load carried...so my HDT is registered for it's weight plus the weight of the smart (yeah, I know it's already paid its road tax, but when it is on the truck it is a LOAD). So YES, you will need a scale ticket unless it is currently registered as a MH and the title has its empty weight......but as cheap as it is to weigh it, take a scale ticket just to be safe. If I had to use GVWR, then my truck would be in the 55,000 to 70,000 bracket (oh hell no!) and I wouldn't be a Texan anymore. Here are the 2019 fees.... ALL VEHICLES 6,001 lbs. – 10,000 lbs. = $54.00 The annual registration fee for a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 6,001 lbs. – 10,000 lbs. is $54.00, plus applicable fees and local county fees. Note: The gross vehicle weight of a truck is determined by adding the empty weight of the vehicle and the heaviest load that will be carried by the vehicle (carrying capacity) during the registration year. WEIGHT BASED REGISTRATION FEES Vehicles 10,001 lbs. or more will pay the following registration fee*, plus applicable and local county fees 10,001-18,000 lbs. = $110.00 18,001-25,999 lbs. = $205.00 26,000-40,000 lbs. = $340.00 40,001-54,999 lbs. = $535.00 55,000-70,000 lbs. = $740.00 70,001-80,000 lbs. = $840.00 EDIT: BTW: welcome to Texas
  20. Randy, why does "empty weight" make a difference in what TYPE of registration you get? In my state registration goes by actual weight on a non commercial vehicle. So get a scale ticket, figure out which weight group you fall in and register it for the max weight in that price group. But if your motorhome weighs 30, 40 or 50000 pounds, so what?
  21. How easily will a 41ft NH and an HDT fit in the state and national parks where you are?? I know a lot of state parks down here just aren't big enough for a 41ft'er pulled by an HDT.
  22. Send Exile a private message with your contact info. I know he uses that feature since he and I have chatted back and forth.
  23. It also depends on what county you are registering in. Livingston is fairly well versed in it. I had absolutely no issues in Montgomery County years ago. Exile had a boat load of issues in Austin County. Like he said, he should be able to help you, he has the experience of being put through the proverbial wringer and he survived.
