GM passes Ford to take No. 2 spot in EV sales behind Tesla

Excerpt:

"DETROIT (AP) — General Motors rode strong first-quarter sales of the Chevrolet Bolt to bump crosstown rival Ford out of second place in the U.S. electric vehicle sales race.

But GM's EV sales of 20,670 were still far below those of industry leader Tesla, which delivered more than 161,000 vehicles in the U.S. from January to March, according to estimates from Motorintelligence.com.

Ford sold only 10,866 EVs during the quarter, but the company said that's largely because it had to stop making the top-selling Mustang Mach-E electric SUV while it retooled a factory in Mexico to increase production. Spokesman Said Deep said the company didn't build Mach-Es for seven weeks during the quarter, cutting into sales.

Also, Ford was forced to stop making the F-150 Lightning electric pickup in February after a battery caught fire during a pre-delivery quality check. The problem was fixed and production resumed March 13."

I can see how the Bolt EV would carry the sales numbers as it is considerable less money than either Tesla or Ford EVs.

This is the one my son-in-law has and the Bolt is surprisingly (to me) quite comfortable and definitely peppy making it a nice little car in a no-frilly kind of way.

I learned just last week GM is owned in part by China, not wholly but partial.  https://investguiding-com.ngontinh24.com/articles/what-percentage-of-gm-does-china-own#toc-0

China likely owns a piece of every auto company, American or otherwise, by stock ownership or simple control of the raw materials and/or components that go into them.

The article said in the first para that they were number two not even close to Tesla sales figures.

So GM in two months sold 20,670 EVs versus Tesla's 161,000. Hardly "carrying" the sales numbers.

Tesla also just dropped the price of their cars again. The 2023 Model Y is now the same price for a new one, $49,999.99 as my Model Y in 2019 for the exact same price.

"Tesla's decision to slash U.S. vehicle prices comes ahead of the implementation of new battery and mineral component requirements to qualify for the full Inflation Reduction Act $7,500 tax credit for EVs."

And I did not say it exceeded Tesla sales. I just said it was not surprising it carried the sales numbers it did due to price. Not every comment made about EVs is anti-Tesla. Although, my son-in-law says that if he were to spend the money it would cost him for a Tesla S or X he would buy a BMW iX for the better fit and finish. I don't have the money to consider either so I just nod my head knowing that his research and reasoning are sound.

Elon Musk doesn't have to ask before acting, like GM and Ford must do with their BOD.

Yep, plus his margins are still high even after dropping prices, so he can change course nimbly.

That is not entirely true. The SEC forced him out of his position as Chairman of the Board because of Tweets he made on potential actions. He does remain CEO and while the Board generally backs him, he does answer to a Board that answers ultimately to the stockholders.

He does have quite a bit more leeway than any other CEO, because he owns a larger percentage of stock and founded the company.

Tesla was founded by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning.  Musk is the largest "individual" stock holder, but his 13% share is far from a majority.

I think they listen to him because he is smart and has good vision about where the company should go.

Thanks for correcting that Don I missed that. Ray is good people but that was an error.I spend less time here nowadays. And I just had surgery with a month recovery time. No biggie. You're right and I have said that a bunch. Thanks for catching that. Look at the dwindling participation since Mark Nemeth left as Forum admin. I have got to get a round tuit and redo my website. I make the rules there.

Disregard GM becoming Number 2 behind Tesla with the Bolt. Even then the numbers were far apart:

Ray??? Um no it did not.

No problem bud! But I had to correct that. I have seen it at $17-$22.5 on IPO when I first bought it. And I believe it went briefly at or near $2k just before the five for one split in 2020 just before I bought my Model Y that year.

Watch the rest of 2023.
