sheldons65
I’m going to need a new rear axle due to damage to the spindle caused by a bearing failure. It is a Dexter axle. None of the measurements for the spring center distance seem to measure the same as axles that can be ordered. Is this pretty common for travel trailers? Maybe some customization is needed? What is y’all’s experience? I was kind of hoping to replace it myself but may end up having it done. The place where we store our TT seems to do good work. it’s going to need new hub and brakes for one side so it’s good to just replace it all in that case. Darryl&Rita
The axle will have a tag on it, with the manufacturer, weight rating, and the serial number. Give the info to your parts supplier of choice. They can order an exact replacement that way. Sometimes, you get lucky, and an off the shelf axle will suffice, but not always. For your trailer, disk brakes are likely overkill. ALLOY
You might be able to find Dexter distributor that can build the axle for you. https://www.dexteraxle.com/distributor-locator/us-and-canada Quote 2011 Cameo 34SB3
Ray,IN
FWIW, the axle stub may be replaced in the axle tube. Axle stubs are sold separately at some RV supply stores. If axle bearing surfaces are not worn-away I have repaired several that were nicked and grooved with a fine smooth file, then polished the filed surface with emory paper enough to get where i'm going and find a trailer repair shop to have a new stub welded into the axle. Randyretired
Ray,IN has some good suggestions. If you still need a new axle I have ordered these without the spring mounts welded on and welded the mounts as needed. Another, less desirable way is to cutoff the spring mounts and weld new ones as needed. sheldons65
Thanks all. I've submitted the serial number to a local Dexter dealer. They are checking on price and lead time.
