Another HDT Project

We've carried our ramps a variety of ways, and have never been totally happy with it.  Last week, we were piddling around in the shop and I had an idea.  I called Carl Wagner as I thought he'd done something similar.  He told me what he did, and why he no longer used it.  Hmmm.. I went in another direction, and asked my bride to see if we had some light angle iron out in the storage rack.  She came back without the metal, but had an idea of how to make Carls method work.

She'd found an old "basket" of sorts that I'd built back in 4/90 (thus the numbers) to carry flood debris out of the fields.  It was mounted on the front of a 4wd tractor and pivoted to dump.

I shortened it and made a door in the passenger side.  I also mounted a tube to slide in the receiver hitch.  I discovered the hitch was out of square in all three planes. 😒

A test fit, put in four mounting bolts through the rear of the bed, and it's ready for paint.

I moved it outside for painting.  Where would you hang the door to paint?

Installed, ramps loaded and secured.

I made "skids" or runners from scraps of HDPE cut from old fertilizer tanks and plastic barrels to facilitate the in 'n out of the ramps.  By using a heat gun, I was able to mold the strips so they "snap" onto the ramps, no fasteners neaded.

Now we just need to hit the road and see if it all works.

Nice job!  I've got a "stinger box" off the hitch for firepit, wood and some bow targets, so wouldn't work on mine.

I ended up putting the ramps vertical, alongside the drom.

Nice to see how everyone solves their "build" to suit their needs.

Your wife had an excellent idea. Oftentimes they truly are the better half!

She's been hitting some home runs lately, and we're getting the scrap pile trimmed down to size in the process.  It's a game between us, to see what we can re-use and re-purpose.

Another reason for mounting this way is that it gives me a surface to attach additional mud flaps, full width.  Stone chips in the fiver suck.
