What Type of Ladder do you carry?

Need some advice/input on buying a ladder. I would like for it to fold up small enough to fit into a bay but be strong/safe enough to be useful. 10 ft will probably be long enough. Anything new on the market that you would recommend? Thanks in advance!

Pugsly, that is the reason I am looking for a ladder...never felt safe on the ladder that is on the back of the RV and yesterday one of the steps broke as I was coming down...thankfully it was near enough to the ground so I could just hop off but had it been at the top it could have been a disaster...it will be coming off this weekend!!!!

I could not find the one that we have so it may not be made any longer, but it was very similar to this one, but in an 8' version. I wanted a stepladder that could stand alone. We have friends who carry this telescoping one and are very happy with it.

I have carried the 7' version of the step ladder for 10 years or so ...I originally wanted the 8' but after measuring found it would not fit in the full-width compartment where I wanted to store it. I use the 7' for many tasks around the RV, and often to help me get to the upper part of the rear ladder rather than having to dig out the extension that is in the basement. It alone would not get me on OR off the roof safely. And I have been tempted many times to buy the telescoping ladder, but haven't done it yet.

I am pretty sure I am going to give the "telescoping ladder" a try. Since I am a bit over 250 pounds it will be a good test on its durability and sturdiness. I will definitely report on how it performs.

X2 on the telescoping ladder. Stores nicely and only weighs maybe 15 lbs. Been using it for about 2 years and very happy with it. Just make sure it is properly locked at each rung before using.

Interesting what you said about your installed ladder. I rarely use mine since it seems so flimsy and hearing that yours failed makes me even less likely to use it again.

By the way mine is a different brand than the other links in this post. It is the Telescopics brand and can be found on Amazon.

I carry a Telesteps collapsible ladder. There are a wide variety of heights. Well made and sturdy.

I went to lowes and bought a fiberglass 8 foot ladder. It just fits across in my front storage area. I like it much more then a telescoping one as I do not want to lean a ladder on my rig.

I would love a step ladder for things like washing the rig, but i only carry the telescopic one since Im tight on space. The telescopic one will carry my 210 weight well, but if you have to go full length and go up top, definitely have someone hold it, abd be prepared for some bowing. Also, make double sure that each section is locked into place. A couple times I've found myself listing slightly to one side because one side of one section wasn't locked into place.

Carry both a Telesteps Ladder and a 7' collapsible ladder like Kirk linked to. Both have their own places of use and take up very little space. The collapsible lays beside our one of our siding storage trays. The Telesteps is under a 4" high platform in a short bay that holds tables, trays, aluminum entry step, cleaning supplies bag and gas fire pit. Both ladders can be accessed in under 3-5 minutes.

I also have the 7ft that folds to a 4 inch square for storage. Serves its purpose. Never been on a ladder this shaky. Most of the time I need to stand on the next to the top rung and it is a bit of a balancing act if I'm not on a concrete pad. On concrete it wobbles a little less. Will be looking for a collapsible ladder soon.

Ooops! I mis-posted. My ladder is the Telesteps as well. Don't know where I came up with the other name, but it doesn't show up in Amazon if you do a search under the wrong name.

We have the telescoping ladder, but there are a couple of safety concerns you need to be aware of. First, after having an experience with ours while using it on a paved site, had the bottom end of it slide out away from the trailer while I was near the top. Fortunately, I only hit my head on the rear bumper of the truck. Rung my bell, but no real damage done  The other thing to be aware of is, when collapsing the ladder, make sure no part of your hands and fingers are where the sections can pinch as it slides closed, or you will have a nasty injury. That injury I have not experienced, and don't intend to. Otherwise, we have had our ladder over four years and it works great.

I bought an 8' fiberglass step ladder which I cut 4" off the bottom legs to fit into our storage garage.

Greg

So that's how you do it. I cut 4" off the top of mine. It fell apart. Rats.

I also like to have the stand alone feature of a step ladder. What I did was buy an 8ft fiberglass ladder and cut about 3" off the legs so that it fit crosswise in our basement compartment. If you're careful you can remove and reattach the feet to the shortened legs. For my 5er it seems to be all I need for access.

We have been using a "Little Giant" knockoff purchased at Walmart for10 years. Much safer than many of the telescoping ladders. It can be set up as triangle at various heights. Can be adjusted for uneven topography and opened up into a straight position to reach 13'. It folds up nicely for storage in our basement area. Made of aluminum so not to heavy. What I like about the triangle set up is that access up and down from two sides if you want or it can be straddled for more stability. If you prefer the Little Giant, Costco has/had them for about $130 bucks as I recall. I think I paid $80 at Walmart for the knock-off.

Just wanted to up-date this thread...I decided to go with the knock-off version of the "little Giant". Lowes had them for 85 bucks!! I used it this weekend as a step ladder to string lights and it worked great. Yesterday afternoon I used it as an extension ladder to climb up on the roof of the RV and once again it worked great. It is much more stable than the ladder on the back of the RV and much easier to climb up and down on. Folds up very nicely and fits in the bay. My wife also used it in the step ladder mode and loved the stability. I would highly recommend it! Thanks again for all the great input!
