Well we just finished 4 months at Okefenokee NWR. Busy months from March 1st to mid May. Taught pondy study and bird migration to about 3000 elementary kids, mostly 3rd & 4th grade on field trips. Ron did historical interp at their restored homestead. Great place except for the yellow flies that appeared early this year mid May and ate me up bad!

I'm spending the summer volunteering for Oregon Islands NWR. They have a partnership with Oregon State Parks. I provide outdoor interpretation on breeding sea birds four mornings a week at Harris Beach State Park, and the state park provides a full hookup campsite in the park campground. It's been pretty foggy here, but it's a great gig.

I am home getting my house ready to sell. I volunteer for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area in the summer on Amtrak with the Trails and Rails program. They do not offer an RV site so I do this when I am home. I ride the train from St Paul to WI Dells area and talk about the Mississippi River and other things out the window for this National Park Partnership.

I will be doing a paid position at Yellowstone in a few weeks to fill in for end of the season at the campgrounds.

We just arrived Wednesday at Grant in Yellowstone and will be here for the summer as camp hosts. This is our 4th year here. The campground doesn't open until Sunday so we've had the campground to ourselves. Peace before the storm I guess.

Still up here in Alaska volunteering at Tetlin NWR. Three more weeks then we start our AK travels. We have had our share of excitement with the forest fire and our order to evacuate and our frequent night time visits by various bears both Brown and Black. Biggest problem has been with the solar system which provides our electric.

We are going to be volunteering at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, just south of Phoenix for the winter season. This will be our first volunteer position & we are SO excited! Any words of advice from you "old hands"?

Sorry to be a bit slow in responding to your post but missed it in the existing thread. We have not volunteered at Casa Grande but have been there and did talk with their volunteers and believe that it will be a great experience for you. We spent time not that far away from you at Boyce-Thompson Arboretum and had a great winter so feel that you will also. It is an area that is very attractive to the snowbird population. If you enjoy the area and choose to go back for another season, you may want to try the arboretum just for a change of pace.

Advice I might offer is to just keep a positive attitude. While not all visitors you will meet will be pleasant, our experience has been that far more good people come to these attractions than do unpleasant ones so hang your memories on the best ones! I don't know what type of position you are taking there but we prefer to do the public contact positions. Pam likes the visitor centers and gift shops while I prefer the interpretive type of positions.

We've finished our volunteer gig at Tetlin NWR and now touring AK. Anyone interested in volunteering for one of two (8 weeks) sessions with USFWS next year it's never too early to get an application in. They generally have more applicants than positions.
