Engine Options/Settings

I'm sitting at a Cummins dealer taking care of a few things, and thought I'd ask the group here if there's anything they'd recommend changing in the engine's computer settings.

First on my list is setting the cruise control to allow the engine brake to come on to control speed. I'm also going to have them look to see how things are set up in terms of shutdowns--I've never been shut down, but want to know what to expect.

Anything else that I should ask for?

I'm not sure what it's set at, but when I bought this the computer showed that its maximum logged trip speed was 96 mph--that's getting close to being rev limited. I'm going to see if I can get a printout of what all is stored.

Dave,

When I did mine I stood beside the tech with the computer screen and he went over each parameter that was changeable and asked what I wanted changed. Was only charged one hour shop time.

I plan to do the same. I was just trying to figure out as much as possible in advance. The Cummins PowerSpec software that you can download for free has definitely helped me out, with a lot of descriptions of the engine's features.

It looks like I'm already in for a power uprate--valve clearances across the board have been "tight". Having seen under the valve cover, I'm amazed how easy it looks compared to one of my cars that uses shims to adjust valve lash. It's a threaded adjustment screw, with another to hold it in place.

Dave, someone here has a list of all the parameter options for your box. I did the same as Carl but only changed the cruise settings

to 95 and got a complete printout of everything the engine knew from it's birth. You want to know how many times the fan has turned?

If you talk real nice it is possable to get a print of all recorded work been done to that VIN #

look at that, Scrap did it before I could push enter. :)

Dave,

I got that printout when I bought this thing--I remember paying Volvo ~$200 to look the thing over, and they included giving me that.. You can definitely learn a lot about how the truck has been driven. I'm just getting ready to start moving, overhead done and settings tweaked.

BTW--the new shocks made a huge improvement in ride.
