  1. Oh yes, I almost forgot. I spent a winter trapping from a log cabin in the mountains in Maine. Heated with a wood stove. No running water. Outhouse. Wear layers. Wear light layers that you can peel off or add to. The innermost layer should be one that wicks sweat away from you. And wool will still keep you warm when wet. These days the only snow I see is on TV or in friends' email/texts. They had three feet in Saskatoon this week.
  2. We prefer a queen. We have a camper queen (six inches shorter) because the bed slide and wardrobe slide are opposite each other. A full-sized queen is too long. This is my only complaint with the rig; my feet hang over sometimes. 😢
  3. If you are not dry camping a good electric blanket is very nice to have.
  4. Which brings me back to marks on the ground. When we stopped in MD ten days ago I put two markers in the ground four inches out from both the front and rear left tires. We drove the TV all week. Yesterday evening I parked the TV next to the markers. No trouble because I could see them on the ground from the drivers seat (or in side mirror). This morning I backed up close to the hitch from that position. I got out and looked, confirmed that I was spot on, and connected.
  5. I believe the Escapees park in Bushnell requires you to have a tow vehicle. I have stayed in other parks that have the same requirement. OTOH I've stayed in parks where people with seasonal site rentals are not required to have a TV.
  6. If you are only interested in your own stuff and not in the commercial, I highly recommend not going into a commercial venture. You will either be unhappy about the work you must do, or not do the work and be unhappy about the money you have lost and the failure of the project. Any commercial venture takes a lot of work. Even with a coop many of the co-owners will be gone much of the year. Someone has to run it. That means someone mowing and repairing and painting etc. That means you. Most commercial ventures also have a significant money outflow. This is particularly true in the first part of the venture. Rent a site in another park. Buy a site in a coop. Buy land and install utilities and a pad. Or rent it. Don't buy into a commercial venture in which you have no interest.
  7. i don't believe WiFi Ranger will ever match to Verizon. Ours will connect to other WiFi sources. Those can be wireless internet such as the RV park in which we are staying, Hotspots such as our Verizon MiFi, hardwired networks or USB connections to hotspots, or conbinations of the above. Any hotspot connection will use bandwidth. If it is connected to your hotspot that will be your bandwidth. I find two advantages to Ranger. One is that everything I have logs into Ranger and I just have to set up my connection to Ranger. The second is that Ranger provides security for otherwise public networks. A third thing that I use much less frequently is that I can allow guest access without compromising security.
  8. My daughter claims she will run for office on the sole platform of ending daylight savings time.😱
  9. Final followup. We just checked the Sumter County voter site. Our ballots have arrived and been counted. We did have to send them overnight at a cost of $99 by UPS to be sure they got there in time. For now I will continue with Escapees mail service but will watch it closely. Thanks to all who answered.
  10. I like a 410 mossberg pump, spreader choke and 2-1/2" Defender ammo made for the Taurus Judge pistol. It is 12 BB's and 3 discs. Not penetrating the neighbors but ugly at close quarters. It cycles just fine.
  11. My sympathies. Is there any way to get a really big pig and delivery?
  12. That is the I'd-rather-be-judged-by-twelve-than-carried-by-six theory. The other side of the coin is being adversely judged by 12 when the firearm wasn't needed an losing the right to possess everywhere. That's a matter of personal choice.
  13. "Licensed gun" is exactly the issue. If you are traveling outside of CT you are not necessarily talking about a "licensed gun." In fact in some states you may be talking about an unlicensed, illegal weapon. If you have a lawful CCW in a particular state you should not encounter problems for possessing that firearm in that state, regardless of whether you are carrying it. And no, in this instance it may not be easier to ask forgiveness. In some states asking forgiveness may involve asking a jury at the expense of several tens of thousands of dollars and the risk of unpleasant roommates if forgiveness is not granted.
  14. We had to laugh. One of the reasons we have a RV is never having to see -20 again. Wayne and Jinx from Maine
  15. Pardon my being dense, but what exactly does a long dead king of Sparta have to do with this?
  16. A good tool for this to avoid getting grubby hands is an infrared thermometer. $25 from Amazon (and available elsewhere for those who don't shop from Amazon). Every time. It takes just a few minutes. Tire failure is much more costly.
  17. Every month when traveling (and the first day of traveling after a long stop) I add a half cup of Dawn, a cup of borax and five gallons of water to each tank before traveling. When I stop that night I dump the tanks and flush the black water tank. It breaks loose all sorts of things, including grease from the gray tank (yes I wipe the dishes before washing them.) I don't know if would help with a pyramid, but it sure wouldn't hurt.
  18. I have the Ford OEM system on my 2017, F-350 diesel. they have a problem with leaking slowly. I've replaced them twice under warranty with equal success - at least one always leaks. I lose about 2-3 lb per day. Fortunately it is the left front so easy access. I have a good compressor that is quick to set up so I've left the system in place. That experience has led me to not install a system on the trailer. I've no problem with leaking on the trailer.
  19. I don't know about others, but I have absolutely no desire to be in a book anywhere. I like privacy. I suspect it is a personal thing and reactions will run the gamut.
  20. Lay some boards along the sides of the hose. Weed whacker problem fixed. Bigjim is absolutely right about not leaving the valves open. What happens is all of the liquids drain off immediately, and all of the solids set on the bottom. In the black water tank you get a pyramid of poop in short order. The buildup of goop in the grey tank is pretty bad, but a somewhat slower process. Getting rid of either will not be fun. You can leave the hose hooked up, but leave the valves closed except when dumping the tanks (or when running a washing machine.) Black water tank gets dumped first, then the gray water tank. If your unit has a flush system for the black tank, use it between dumping the black and gray tanks. Be sure to leave the black tank valve open when you flush. There are many things you can add to the tank to deal with the odor. I use an enzyme called RV Digest It. It breaks down the solids and deals with the smell, too. It does not interfere with the septic tanks in the RV park where you are staying as do some substances containing formaldehyde or bleach.
  21. We live full time in a 2006 Carriage Carri-Lite 36KSQ. We travel quite a bit. Carriage (the old ones, not the one's called Carriage now sold by Northwoods) are solid and very comfortable to live in. Be sure to have it fully checked out if you are thinking about it. Even the most solid RV's can be ruined by poor maintenance. Also, appliances and equipment can just wear out.
  22. You said it in a nutshell. It is spiking across the nation. I'm of the opinion that most places will be equally bad. I think the primary question is whether the place I am going is likely to allow me to be comfortable while maintaining the necessary safety precautions. By safety precautions I mean distancing from others, masks, hand washing and avoiding being indoors for more than a few minutes where others are or have been present. If SoCal allows for that, why not? One caution - is it an area where natural disasters are likely? Fires and hurricanes can put you in jeopardy if you have to go to a shelter. We left Florida for Maine in July for that reason. It looks like SoFL may get its first significant storm this week. We are heading back slowly. I would look for areas that have grocery shopping either by pickup or delivery. In many places there is no reason to go into a grocery store. Delivery is more expensive than pickup, but has the flexibility to chat online with the shopper regarding substitutions and the like. About the cheapest grocery pickup is Walmart. Either way you shop online ahead of time and pay by card. No contact with anyone is involved other than parking outside and identifying yourself to the employee who brings out the groceries. I have them put it in the back of my pickup, but a car trunk works too. For others stores we only patronize those with curbside pickup. Areas that have outdoor activities that you can enjoy while maintaining safety procedures can go a long way toward maintaining your sanity. For us walking, biking and golf top the list. For golf we found a course that does not require us to go inside to check in. We mask in areas close to others, but do not mask on the golf course or when hiking or biking in open areas. At Acadia NP this summer we stuck to the carriage paths and avoided narrow trails because the park was very busy and the folks there had mixed ideas about safety. The highest risk activity we have is laundry. We try to pick mid-week times when it seems campground laundries are used the least. We try to be the first ones that morning. We swoop in and load the machines, and set our watches. When they are done we go back and load the dryers - set watches. Swoop in and stuff it into the baskets. Then back to the rig to fold it. It may be a little more wrinkled, but we keep our total indoor time down to under fifteen minutes. Both of us do this chore; that cuts the exposure time in half. We are not waiting by the machines, regardless of what the signs say. For us campground activities are at the bottom of the list this year. No bingo, poker, dinners or the like. No clubhouses or doubles pickleball (outdoors but too much proximity and hard breathing, at least for doubles.) Maybe next year. Travel safely. Let us know what you decide.
  23. You've had dogs before so you are likely pretty good at training. Even so I recommend How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With I'm a bit envious. I lost my Lab in December but am not ready to take the puppy plunge yet.
