Ok Shaker fans....... here is the chance to take over the HDT herd from the V-machines in one fell-swoop

I was at the Indian/Polaris/Slingshot dealer just south of Cincinnati a few hours ago, and they had a Slingshot painted in Wildcat livery. Pretty sharp, even if you're not a sports fan.

 

But about those FL's......I'm going to guess they're a fleet of trade-ins?

Almost went with a new Cascadia because of the DD13 engine and the new DT12 Tranny but that KW kept calling out to me. In the end, the K-Whopper won out.

 

You could make a nice RV hauler from one of these though.

We had a interesting tax year so I had some face time with some CPA's and one of the CPA's does some advising to the accounting department of a mid-size regional trucking firm so we drifted a few minutes into the somewhat voodoo world of when to resale a original purchased fleet tractor or portion of a fleet of tractors..........

When and how to sell a truck or fleet of trucks that were purchased new is a dream-come-true-project for a been-counter in the back office......

 

Of course if you "acquire" (Lease / purchase) tractors by the hundreds or thousands at a time you will likely get a heavy discount from the "street-price" to say the least so.......your "unit-aquisition-costs" are fairly low compared to retail.

 

Of course tax related depreciation is a major factor in triggering a resale time.

 

I was amazed at the huge amount of data that is crunched to determine "consumables" that hugely factor the per-mile-costing in the trucking game.

 

The CPA indicated that as modern trucks are equipped with more and more complex systems and sub-systems that many of these systems fall into the category of "consumables" and may not fall under the base tractor factory warranted coverage. Complex systems often require complex and COSTLY defined rework and renewal intervals and these costly reworks can figure heavily into the matrix that determines the proper time to sell a first-run-fleet truck.

 

These days “trucks have a mind-of-their-own” in that the complex computers that are the heart of the truck allows fleet operators to split-hairs with a huge amount of data to determine costing and “asset-management” decisions........

 

In the not to distant past normal day to day tractor consumables were , fuel, oil, filters, tires, brakes, hoses and small incidental repairs........with modern tractors add DEF, ECM replacement / reprogram, DPF service / repair, Auto-tranny repair, Costly limp-mode delays.........as the modern truck ages these complex systems simply become a larger cost factor in the day to day operation of a aging tractor.

 

So large fleet operators sell tractors that they “acquired” at attractive costs into the secondary RETAIL market just before these units approach the more costly complex systems needed repair/ rework /replace life-cycle.

 

Depending on the secondary market demand many of the large fleet resale trucks can reap a tidy profit to the original owner while the new owner obtains a fairly modern truck at a fair price and will likely shop the repairs needed as they occur down the road.......

 

Who said trucking was simple......

They sold to Heartland. But don't forget that the Gordon family owns the Freightliner dealers here so your dealer lease gets mixed in with one of the owner op leases that is in vogue now and one family gets all your money. And remember that they've got plenty of trucking contacts so if it was a screamin deal then they wouldn't need Craigslist........ So sign carefully. But roomer I heard when this was all shaping up last month was 900 tractors so maybe 200 are already sold?

So, following DT's train of thought, if said company is going to sell the trucks at what would be considered a low mileage/age, it might follow that they could easily skimp on fluid changes and other pm's too. So what if the engine only makes it to 800k? It'll be gone long before that.

I know of at least 2 holding lots of mostly Cascadia's with at least 1000 trucks in each one, all fleet turn ins. This is just an indicator of the health, or lack of it of the general economy. Freightliner just laid off another 1000 workers in North Carolina in the first week of June 2016, and another 500 in Mexico. They are down to one shift at each plant. Freight rates are in the toilet, so there is still some overcapacity to deal with.

My plan to scoop-up a dozen or so spare Dollytrolley's might be a little premature........

 

Now that the Brits have bailed from the EU ...........maybe I should wait for the "overcapacity" that you mention "stabilizes" before I do my bakers-dozen-truck-buying-orgy............do you think they just might let me leave them parked with the other +1,000 trucks until I need one of my spares.....?

 

How could I find my spares when they are parked among +1,000 parked trucks? ? ?

 

So.......with many, many, too many thousands of low-mileage-late-model units on the market how thin is the margin for the few new trucks being built? ?

 

"Grumps" always said ......"trucking is tough........just tougher sometimes more...... than other times....."

 

Looks like tough-truck-times are ahead.....
