Learned something about cancelling the Escapees Mail Service

Recommended Posts

After several years we have "retired" from fulltiming.  We have very much appreciated the Escapees Mail Service and highly recommend it to all.  However, now that we've returned to a stix and brix we've been moving all our accounts to our home address.  I called Escapees and mentioned to them that I won't be renewing the service when it expires in a few months.  To my surprise I was told that they will continue to forward mail for six months after the end of my paid service.  That's a pleasant surprise and an unexpected level of service.

Another reason we're glad we found Escapees when we were preparing to go fulltime.

When we came off the road and cancelled the mail service, Escapees explained that they would forward every month for 6 months.  We received most things by email, so these were easy to change our domicile.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Escapees mail service for over 10 years.

"U.S. Postal Service regulations require us to continue forwarding your first-class mail for six months after you cancel the service. This post-cancellation forwarding service is included with your enrollment fee. If your postage deposit account balance becomes negative during this time, we will ask you to add funds to it. At the end of the six-month post-cancellation period, we will refund any remaining balance in your postage deposit account to you."

At least part of the reason for the 6 month policy is while you can file a change of address to instantly start sending your mail TO a mail forwarder, you cannot issue a similar change of address AWAY from a mail forwarding service.  The post office won't pre-sort the mail going to the forwarder to look for your mail.  When you leave the forwarder you have to notify everyone of your new address and mail will continue going to the forwarder until the senders make the changes.

Which is also why it is good to get your mail service started a few months before you go full time. It takes time for all those address changes to happen. It's OK to have everything go to your service because you can simply have them send it on to your home until you actually leave.

When we were getting ready to go full-time, we started the Escapees Mail Service about 6 months before our transition.  By the time we were full time, everyone had us as a Livingston, TX address.
