I would Really like for the exhaust brake to function again. Truck has the volvo motor if that makes a difference?
ddm502001
Exhaust Brake should be a Disconnect Switch on Clutch. On the old Jakes were three connection points also where One(Usually Center) was Common, one end was NO or Normally OPEN(That is when switch is in Relaxed State, IE Pedal Away from Clutch Pedal applied) and the other connection NC or Normally Closed same position. With pedal in normal operating position check with a Ohm Meter Center to each end, then apply the Clutch and check those Continuity points should have reversed. You Want the one NO to Center and the Center as to normal connection. Again NO when Pedal is Depressed, and closed when pedal in driving full up/released position. It is just a switch, I will try to PM you with the full PDF. Chet That did not work to send picture. Watch for PM. Anawilliam850
In a 1998 Volvo with a clutch switch, the clutch switch should have two wires connected to it. One wire is typically connected to the COM (common) terminal, and the other wire is typically connected to the NO (normally open) terminal. To reattach the wires, you will need to identify which wire was originally connected to which terminal on the switch. Typically, the wire connected to the COM terminal will be a ground wire, while the wire connected to the NO terminal will be the signal wire from the clutch pedal switch. Once you have identified which wire goes to which terminal, you can reattach them to the switch by securing them with screws or clamps on the switch. It's important to ensure that the wires are properly secured and insulated to prevent any electrical hazards. If you're still having trouble or are unsure about how to proceed, it may be best to consult a professional mechanic or electrician for assistance to ensure that the switch is properly installed and functioning safely. West_Coast_Racer
just to update this thread, I got the switch wired correctly, and also found that the plug to the back of the exhaust brake switch wasn't making good contact. I was delighted to hear the 1st stage of engine brake come on. The 2nd stage wasn't working so I was thinking it might be a switch issue. I was happy to have the 1st stage working to be honest. About 120 miles into my next trip I had the switch set for both stages to work an while going down a 6% grade I heard a "pop" and the 2nd stage started working. What a difference it is to drive now with both stages working. At 49k total weight the truck is a lot happier now!
rickeieio
Congratulations!!! Yes, a functioning engine brake is a wonderful thing. Our Volvo had a Cummins, and after the engine brake was fully engaged, the next thing to engage was the fan clutch. It's pretty cool to be going down a mountain and feel each stage kick in.
