Maricopa county parks

We've stayed at all and love them all!  No hosting experience at them though.

We did host at Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction - a great experience.

The longest we ever stayed at any volunteer position was 4 months and most were 3 months. We were at Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior for 3 months and at Imperial National Wildlife Refuge for 4 months. Both were good experiences.

I need to know how much we will love each after five months?

No one could tell you that!  That would be personal preference as to what you like to do both in the park when you're on the job and out of the park on days off.  Management, volunteers and duties are always changing so hard to say.

Ourselves, we enjoyed staying particularly at Usery for the hiking and lots to do in the immediate area, Cave Creek to be close to daughter & it also has nice hiking, Lake Pleasant we stayed in the dry sites; the park is huge with many camp areas, great if you have a water toy or like to fish, kind of far for things to do in the greater Phoenix area... same with White Tank, nice hiking but far from to-do things outside the park, McDowell is nice if you're into biking on trails... again, not convenient for the greater Phoenix area activities.

They all utilize many volunteers so that could be good for work load or occasionally switching days for an important event or Dr appt, etc.

The host sites are nice in all of them.

How many hours are they asking of you?  Five months is a long time but they probably want you for the full busy season without having to train new ones.

Each one is different so it just depends on YOU.

We have turned down many gigs that wanted long term commitments and have also negotiated some shorter lengths. Two months is max for us in volunteer gigs, anything longer is too much like a job and really that should be a job. It takes 1 month to learn most jobs and the second month to enjoy the job. Volunteering is about us experiencing the gig and then moving on, if we were in it to be devoted to the gig, then we would just stay there long term, even year after year which a lot of folks do. But by doing that, you will miss out on the next new (maybe even better) experience.

For AZ, we volunteered at "The Nature Preserve" in Patagonia, AZ and got introduced to birding.

We also negotiated with parks, including Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park.  We preferred not to be there the 4m they wanted so we got another couple to split it with us.  It worked great.

The Nature Preserve in Patagonia is a top place for birding.  Awesome and beautiful area.
