  1. Power factor comes into play when you have large inductive loads like in some commercial settings. Then it will have to be figured in when supplying power to the facility. For general residential houses including RV it's basically meaningless. The backup power supply the OP has that rating because it is a inductive load but very small but if a place had a very large bank of computers all on this type of device then it will come into play. No need to worry about over current protection because everyone of them I have seen have it built into it because it's a 120V rec and you know someone will try and plug something like a electric heater into it so they protect the device from overload. You will also see a lot of rec on them because think about how many USB chargers the average household has anymore. The power factor is for the incoming power not the power supplied buy the device. In my 40+ years being a electrician and retiring with a Class A Electrical Contractor license and numerous certifications for the refrigeration end of my business and way to many hours in code classes I did get asked what VA was a few times and some were worried like the OP that it was voltage and I gave the same answer, it's just watts and don't worry about it. I'm not sure but that rating may have to be on there to get UL approved. Denny
  2. Let's face it guys for the average person VA is the same or close to the same as watts. Denny
  3. 750 VA is another way of saying watts, at 120 volts it has a max output of 6.25 amps. Denny
  4. I take it your trying to run your A/C off a small generator like a 2000 Honda and it won't start it. Look at getting a inverter big enough to start and run it and wire the A/C circuit to it. Then just hook your trailer to the generator and let the batteries take the surge when it starts and the generator will keep the batteries up and run the a/c after it starts through the converter. Denny
  5. Before early retirement my wife and I were EMTs on our VFD rescue unit and I can tell you that 80% of our calls for elderly patients was drug reaction problems and some were very serious. Because of what happened to my now passed sister years back and what happened to my wife's now passed cousin I have a very deep distrust of the medical community. Anymore it seems it's all about the almighty $ not practicing medicine. Denny
  6. I ran across this unit https://www.dometic.com/en-ca/professional/ca/products/truck-solutions/truck-air-conditioners/dometic-rtx-2000-_-262673 and if you read down the article it's using a variable speed inverter compressor so new technology is working it's way into the RV industry by way of the trucking industry. Denny
  7. In the winter months they are no where to be found in the dry areas that everyone is drawn to. In Florida it's not just mosquitoes it's this little flying bugs that you can't really see but they bit like crazy and let's not forget the Love Bugs. Denny
  8. I found this interesting http://www.nlcpr.com/Deceptions1.php Denny
  9. Well Kirk the technology for these small compressors hasn't changed much and all the add on gadgets won't change the way they are designed to operate. But I have noticed that refrigerators are starting to use capacitors and that is a step forward, the residential frig I just put in our rig and the dorm refrigerator both have them. What I've been watching is the variable speed technology that's working it's way into HVAC both compressors and fans. Variable speed is a whole new design made possible by inverter technology. They take the incoming A/C and convert it to DC and run it through a variable frequency inverter and supply specially wound motors. Start circuits are gone and so is high start currents. I can see RV units running off 12VDC in the future if some manufacture is willing to do the R&D to make it happen. I've been looking at new heat pumps to replace our 22 year old unit in our home base and there's a lot of new high efficiency stuff out there because of variable speed. Denny
  10. But how fast is it? You can take any motor and measure the resistance and you will find it's almost a dead short and when you apply power that's the inrush current and you can't change that but the faster the motor starts and builds inductive reactance (resistance) the shorter the inrush current time. Denny
  11. Trying to measure start current with a meter takes a very special meter. If you have a standard digital meter it's to slow to react, a old analog works better but still won't record true inrush current. I always keep a old Amprobe meter (the name brand) in my truck for checking start circuits. When a motor starts the inrush current is always the same but a hard start kit starts it faster so the high start current last for a shorter period so the meter doesn't have a chance to measure it accurately and if your trying to start it on a marginal generator it's fast enough that the generator circuit doesn't see it. This new device is NOT wired into the start circuit and it limits (clamps) the total current witch will keep the start circuit energized longer causing higher current flow in the start windings that will be damaging over time. Denny
  12. Actually a true hard start kit starts the compressor faster if it's sized to the unit. Denny
  13. It's going to damage the start windings, start capacitor and start relay. Start caps are designed to be in the circuit for milliseconds and the start windings are designed for low current and the longer you delay full current so it came make high starting torque the higher the winding current going to be causing heat. It won't happen right away but over time it will degrade the components. Denny
  14. I know I've been retired from my electric/ refrigeration business for a few years but I don't think you can magically soft start a compressor without being directly connected to the start winding. Denny
  15. The only part of your post I don't agree with is the VFW and America Legion being clubs because they are veteran organization not RV clubs. Yes our membership is dwindling but it's because of no major long wars and no draft so it's all volunteer with service members making it a career not required service like the draft years. Denny
  16. You have to look at some of the clubs and the way they were run in the past and now in the present and they went from it's about the members to it's all about the money usually after they changed hands or new management. Denny
  17. I used ShadePro, ordered it online and it work perfect, replaced both window awning and main awning. Denny
  18. We spent a month there a few years back in the late fall and the night sky is brilliant but that's about it and remember it's the desert at 3000 ft so it will be cold at night and cool during the day in the winter. There's a Escapees park in Yuma that you may try, we stay in a park in the foothills of Yuma and love the area and the weather. Denny
  19. Run a wire from the inverter chassis to the frame just to keep it the same potential as the frame for safety. Do not bond the inverter neutral to the chassis ground or any other ground or trailer shore power neutral unless you want to be buying a new one. These small inverters are isolated from the any shore power and have their own return paths back to the point of generation and that's the inverter itself. Denny
  20. It will work if you watch your load and don't let the house batteries get to low, we've done it with our old Honda 650 watt generator when boondocking in the mountains. What I'm playing with now that we have a residential frig because our 5 year old Amish cooling unit died is to plug the converter into the generator and run a 2000 watt PSW inverter off the batteries. I wired the slide that has the refrigerator and entertainment center off the new inverter and because the inverter is running off the batteries I can run the refrigerator using the small generator because the batteries will supply the compressor startup current. When I was playing with it I also started our dorm refrigerator with the same results. I also ran the TV, reciever and tap player and it all worked and the battery voltage stayed at 13.7 with all of them running. Our plan is to run the small generator when dry camping for the night until we go to bed and keep the fridge and chest freezer running along we the the TV. Because the frig and freezer will already down to temp because they run off the inverter and the truck keeps the batteries up when going down the road the load will be light most of the time. Our inverter is Bluetooth so I can monitor the load and control it from my phone. Our little Honda sips fuel and the big generator sucks fuel so running a cord will be worth it. Denny
  21. We have never been turned away from a CG because of the age of our rig that's now 19 years old but it's been well maintained and doesn't look it's age. That rule is in place so the parks will have a reason to not let you in if you are run down poorly maintained RV. Denny
  22. I did this for a living and nobody has come up with the first thing that should be checked and that's that amp draw with a amp probe. Without doing that it's just guessing. If the 12 volt is dropping off and the circuit is opening up and then restarting to soon the over current relay mounted on top of the compressor will cycle before the breaker tripping. The amp draw had to be checked at the breaker panel and the connections at the same time, not just the breaker connection but the neutral also. Then checked at the unit and last at the compressors C terminal (common). The compressor amp draw will be less fan amperage. From experience 95% of the time with problem is at the breaker, it may be a bad connection or a weak breaker. You should also remove the breaker and check the connection where it clips on to the buss bar. Breakers by design will trip if they are run at 80% of rated trip amperage for long periods from heat and after they have tripped a few times that way they become weak and need to be replaced. It could also be a weak run cap causing the compressor to draw high amps under the strain of full load on hot days. Denny
  23. When you say you cleaned the coils did you remove the covers and clean the condenser on the fan side of the coil. Remember the air gets pulled into the coil from the compressor side and out the back and unless you look in there you will never see how dirty the coils are. Next remove the inside cover and make sure the air can't get from the outlet side to the return side, you need all the air going into the ducts. Using the dump will drop the air straight down and get pulled right back into the return and sometimes the RV just isn't insulated good enough for hot weather. Denny
  24. Your chances of getting the studs out without removing the manifolds are slim to none. On my 4.6 Triton V8 that had the same design and same studs instead of trying to remove the remaining nuts and breaking them off I used a right angle die grinder with a arbor so I could use 3" cutoff wheels and cut one side of the nuts off, you have to be careful not to damage the threads, then a impact driver with a 6 point socket to get them off. The remaining studs didn't want to come out so I reused them. The broken studs that were below the head I drilled a 1/8 pilot hole being very careful not to get into the water jacket and then used a left hand twist bit and got one to come out but the other one I drilled and taped because it would come out. The Ford style metal gasket works great when it's all new and flat but not so great after many heat cycles so I used the same style of Fel-Pro gasket I've used for years, it's way more forgiving. Yours will look different but same material. Denny
  25. What we are doing is casting with two Chromecast devices one for each phone. Our Moto 5G phones will not mirror through the USB port but we changed our plans to two single 5G planes with 50GB phone data and 25 GB of hotspot premium data so for now we have 50GB of premium hotspot and for $20 more a month we can raise our premium hotspot to 50 on each phone 100 total. The premium hotspot data works and you don't get slowed down during busy times, we tried it over Memorial weekend and it works as advertised. Denny
