docj Posted July 8, 2018 Report Share Posted July 8, 2018 Quite a few of us on this forum drive large MH's and/or HDT's and I'm sure everyone tries to stay cognizant of which roads are more suitable than others for vehicles of that size. I just came across a useful tool to aid in analyzing proposed routes, the online CA maps of which routes in the State are restricted for buses and RV's greater than 40' and which are considered acceptable for vehicles of that class. Our MH is only 40' but with a towed car we're over 60' long. The one time I happened on a road that had the 30-foot kingpin restriction (which is equivalent to <40' only) I didn't find it to be such a pleasant experience, so having an easy reference of these routes I think will be a significant stress reliever. packnrat Posted July 8, 2018 Report Share Posted July 8, 2018 not only that but there are some roads NOT listed that should be avoided, and some you must stay off of. and yes state hwys. sonora pass- hwy 108, eberts pass - hwy 4 hwy 49 between maraposa and hwy 132. ?something ferry rd? off I5 between redding and red bluff. hills, grades, turns, limited room. sure there are others but these i know. Some, if not all, of these are included in the Mountain West Directory which I didn't mention because I know that lots of forum members are aware of it. noteven Posted July 13, 2018 Report Share Posted July 13, 2018 I think 40’ restriction means a single vehicle that does not bend in the middle. If you are towing you don’t add trailer or toad for purpose of the restriction. There will be other restrictions noted such as overall trailer length permitted and king pin to trailer axle restriction. The idea is your vehicle or combination will fit in it’s own lane without tracking across the center line. "Are we there yet?" asked no motorcycle rider, ever. ( sorry tried to insert a photo of a fliped/jacknifed rv on sonora pass. his brakes heated up and lost it on of all places the last tight curve .
