Hard To Find Stuff

Recommended Posts

I am going to start a thread on hard to find parts and services in hopes it will generate enough interest to act as a guide for HDTers.  If folks are interested maybe it could be pinned to the heading page or be incorporated into the resource guide by one of the moderators.  If you have had trouble finding a part or service and found a reliable source, I would ask you to post a link here and then the thread would be searchable.  A comment saying just search Google, ebay, Craigslist, or Facebook serves no purpose.

Not quite what you asked, but here's a tip I used for years......

Most of us have Volvos.  Dealers aren't on every street corner.  But, Mack trucks use many of the same drive components, so perhaps you can find a Mack dealer near you.  I used a small local Mack dealer for all my parts needs.  Close to home, helpful, and WAY cheaper than the nearest Volvo dealer.  It helped that I also had a Mack for my farm truck.

Unfortunately, dealerships are consolidating, with many now handling both brands.  But you might get lucky.......

I applaud the thought!

But I'd prefer that you take advantage of Mark's website (IMO, a hero in the transition to HDTs for RVers).

Dan,

I agree.  A monumental endeavor by Mark and in no way trying to diminish his work.  Mark and I are friends.  If you re-read my initial post you will see I suggested maybe including something like this in the resource guide.

Great, we agree.  Please consider working with Mark to incorporate it into the Resource Guide rather pinning to the heading page.

Not to speak for Carl, but I took what he wrote to be that either a new "pin" be started, OR include in the Resource Guide.  Either way would be better than nothing.

Here in the PNW, western Oregon, near Hillsboro, there is a local owned shop that has been in business for decades. Many mechanics have served their entire career at this shop. I use them first.

 Hillsboro Diesel. 503-640-4669

They do not have all of the laptop softwares, but high level Cummins and Cat ET I know they have.

They are also Detroit 2 stroke specialists. Very few of those left in the world. But many older conversion buses have Detroit 8v and 6v engines.

I'm a work'n on it.

I have to say that Carl's idea to sticky this at the top here on the forum is a good idea.   I just looked at the link Dan mentioned, while thet may be a great resource it seems rather static.   The updates are from 2018

The more places obscure items and services are noted the better.   Searching for something when you don't know the correct 'terms' to search on, is trying.    I am not sure the linked site has ever come up on a search for big truck RV's at least for me?

Good observation Steve.  The Resource Guide has helped me plenty over the years, but at times can be a bit frustrating if you don't think to look in the right place.  Plus, Mark's not going to be tending it forever, and who will step up as caretaker?

The top of the forum really makes a lot of sense.  Someday, we might even have separate lines for Volvo, PACCAR, etc.
