7-Eleven Now In EV Charging Business With 7Charge

THis caught me by surprice. And their principal stakeholder in Japan just died so things could change fast.

Wow! If they follow through they just might replace the national gas chains as the charging stop and convenience stores in addition to their gas pumps today. For tomorrow they are doing the transition early enough to make a big dent in the revenues possible in EV charging.

Excerpt:

"Everyone, their mother, and their dog can see that the auto industry is electrifying. That includes oil companies (like Shell) and gas stations & convenience stores (like 7-Eleven). Regarding the latter, the news this week is that 7-Eleven has launched its own EV charging network! The name of that charging network is 7Charge.

The first stations in the 7Charge network are in FloridaTexasColorado, and California — and they’re already operational.

The stations each include CCS and CHAdeMO charging options.

“For over 95 years, 7-Eleven has innovated to meet our customers’ needs – delivering convenience where, when and how they want it,” said Joe DePinto, President and Chief Executive Officer at 7-Eleven. “Now, we are innovating once again to meet our customers’ where they are by expanding our business to provide EV drivers convenience of the future … today.”

Naturally, 7Charge comes with an app as well. You can downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, or by visiting 7-eleven.com/7charge.

The company also hints at expanding access and improving equity in the EV charging world with its move. “By expanding the 7Charge network, while continuing to utilize third-party fast-charging network options, 7-Eleven will have the ability to grow its network to match consumer demand and make EV charging available to neighborhoods that have, until now, lacked access.”

Across the United States and Canada, 7-Eleven has more than 13,000 stores or franchise locations.

Unfortunately, 7-Eleven gave very little in the way of details. But another quote from the company indicates that it intends to grow its network to a very large scale. “Once the network’s expansion is complete, 7-Eleven will have one of the largest and most compatible fast-charging networks of any retailer in North America serving communities and customers at charging stations across its entire family of brands including Speedway® and Stripes® stores.” We’ll see!

Again, we got very little in terms of details from 7-Eleven. That’s essentially all the news we have for now."

After seeing how 7-Eleven's run in Taiwan, this does not surprise me.  In Taiwan, and I assume other Asian countries, 7-Eleven stores are more full service than in the USA while still being small.  Lots of food options, with tables, and you can pay your bills there, including parking tickets.

Asia and India are the only continents I have not lived in or visited for TDYs. Interesting Bill. I was surprised because Japan manufacturers hesitated even longer then GM, Ford, VW etc. in producing their first electric cars. I think Toyoda who just resigned in disgrace as Toyota CEO for failing to successfully promote hydrogen fueled cars and fuel cell electrics over Battery EVs, and had his teams fail to produce a viable competitive BEV in the last decade (2010-2020 even taking over the EV teams himself.

Now that the Japanese manufacturers are producing and ramping up EV production it makes sense.
