Microsoft has not unblocked the Windows 10 2004 update for Surface devices, after all

I don't know what the problem is but my Surface Pro 7 tablet hybrid is still not getting the 2004 update. I will check and see if my Surface Pro 4, Surface Go with Pentium, Dell 2720, 27" Dell Inspiron 7790 with 10th gen Intel chipset, Lynn's Lenovo AIO 21", the HP 6305T AMD A8, and the Beelink Mini PC with the X5. I have no systems that I know of that updated - new or older, Intel or AMD, Tower desktop, three AIOs, Surface Pro 7 and Pro 4 both i7, Surface Go, and Intel X5 Mini PC that updated. I will wait until update day next Tuesday to see. It has caused serious problems and I'd rather wait, so my main AIO and Surface Pro systems will be paused for updates after this update Tuesday. I'm in no hurry if it means data loss or degradation of basic functions from a "bad" update.

Excerpt:

"Microsoft is continuing to block the May 2020/Windows 10 2004 update on certain devices, including many of its own Surface PCs, in spite of an apparent lifting of the block a week ago.

Last week, it looked like Microsoft was poised to make the Windows 10 2004 available to some Surface users who have been blocked from being able to manually install and/or use Windows Update to get the feature update. It turns out that is not the case. Apparently, there are still some other issues which is resulting in Microsoft continuing to block the 2004 update on certain Surface devices, including Surface Pro 7, and Surface Laptop 3.

On July 8, Microsoft has quietly updated the wording of its note on Windows 10 2004 availability.

Former wording: "This issue was resolved in KB4557957 and the safeguard hold has been removed as of June 29, 2020. It can take up to 48 hours before the update to Windows 10, version 2004 is offered.

New wording (bolding is mine): "This issue was resolved in KB4557957 and the safeguard hold has been removed as of June 29, 2020. Please note, if there are no other safeguards that affect your device, it can take up to 48 hours before the update to Windows 10, version 2004 is offered."

Microsoft officials are not commenting on what "other safeguards" still are keeping Surface users from being able to install the Windows 10 2004 update. (I've asked repeatedly for the past week for more information.) There are still several officially acknowledged, unresolved issues with Windows 10 2004 which may apply to Surface devices.

Also: It's not just Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7 that are being blocked. I've heard from users of everything from Surface Go 2, Surface Book 2 and 3, Surface Pro X and other older Surface models that they cannot get Windows 10 2004 without forcing the upgrade. And I've heard doing so has created some issues for users who've gone this route.

Some users have reported success in getting the 2004 update by resetting their devices. Others have said removing OneDrive and then reinstalling it seems to work. Microsoft doesn't mention any workarounds for the block in its publicly available information."

My 13" Dell 2-in-1 model 5000 is in the same situation, not updating to 2004.  My ancient 32-bit 14" Acer laptop, which originally came with Vista, and my 15" Dell 7000 both updated to 2004 with no problems weeks ago.

Bill,

Isn't that weird? However my six year old Dell 2720 AIO has not done 2004 yet, or my newest Gen 10 i5 Inspiron 27" AIO with 24GB RAM, 256GB mSATA boot drive and a soon to be replaced 1TB HDD I'll change to a 1TB WD Blue SSD. None of mine have updated to 2004 yet. But I have an AMD A8 HP mid size tower I haven't fired up in a month that I need to try before as well as a new mini PC to try updating to 2004. My Voyo mini PC Voyo Mini PC finally died after seven years. It was awesome for its time and $99.99 new. A couple of months ago I bought one of these with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, to replace it: https://www.gearbest.com/mini-pc/pp_009643703831.html?wid=1433363

Here's the SoC write up: https://www.iacepc.com/intel-celeron-n3450-review/

Good graphics for a home theater computer for 4k movies. No speed demon but good speed nevertheless. I got another Logitech K-400 kb/touchpad for it. They sell for $19.99 online now.

For $199.99 it came with the Vesa drilled bracket to mount on the back of our main TV, or the back of our 2K Acer glare free 1ms. 27" monitor.

My old Dell XPS 1 2720 has a whole new lease with the SSD and extra RAM. So Lynn gets one 27" AIO and I get the other. So her Lenovo 21" AIO goes on the chopping block.

I'm waiting until this Pandemic runs its course before selling anything except the Subaru Baja. That we can let them test drive and disinfect, and neither of us needs to go on a test drive. We can do it all from the garage.

This one just went on sale and I'd have gotten it had it not been higher before. I really like the design and the SoC https://www.gearbest.com/mini-pc/pp_009760498063.html?wid=1527929

I've decided to just wait on 2004.

Me too.  My 3 year old Lenovo T470 (a laptop) and 1.5 year old M920t (a desk-side) are not yet eligible for the 2004 code.  But my two 4 year old Lenovo M700s (mini PCs) are.

Since I only have cellular, I'm waiting until all four are elligible, before I manually download a single image for them.

Still no 2004 on any of my devices. Especially significant is three of them are Surface devices, two Surface Pro and on Surface Go. The Pro 7/i7/16 GB/256GB, and the Go are both 10th gen Intel chip sets. So Microsoft's latest are not ready for 2004.

My 13" Dell 2-in-1 model 5000 just updated to 2004 with no issues.  There is hope the Surfaces will soon be running 2004.

My Surface Pro 7 finally updated last Wednesday as well as my other systems.

Today the Surface Pro 4 got it.

The Surface Go is the only one left.

A couple of days ago I had a failed post 2004 small update and after several tries it installed. I had some issues from the 2004 update with my big 2720 AIO not opening MS Weather app, and my mouse clicks intermittently not working. That little update fixed all of the issues it had after installing 2004.

My Go was designed for Windows X I think it was but I immediately switched it to Windows 10. So maybe it's their last priority.

Bill,

I had to look that up never having heard of the Gram. Ten years ago I knew all the major models of each brand. Nice looking Ultrabook!

A little over an hour.  I don't know exactly since I left expecting several hours.  When I got back it was waiting on a restart which I did.  I was expecting several hours since I have a Samsung laptop with 12gb ram, I7, 1 tb hard drive and it took almost 7 hours to update, but that was on much slower internet.

I was amazed at how fast it really did load.

My last two Surface devices are finishing up now. My Surface Pro 7 took just over 50 minutes.

The Surface Go is just getting started. I expect it to take a couple of hours as it is sloooow next to the Pro 7.
