Excerpt:

"President Obama has signed a new law that calls on all Americans to pause voluntarily for two minutes to honor the sacrifice of veterans. The silence will occur simultaneously across the nation on Veterans Day — at 2:11 p.m. eastern standard time on Veterans Day."

I believe President Obama did the same thing on Memorial Day. We were at a visitor center in Coldfoot AK, on the Dalton Hwy and a ranger came by and asked those of us in there if we would like to join the staff in 3 or 5 minutes of silence in honor of our veterans. We happily joined everyone at the flag pole.

Al,

Memorial day has had the minute of silence at 3PM as long as I can remember. But I am glad he has done this for the first time.

I seem to remember it being at 11-11-11; the month, day, and hour.

I'm really not picky about what hour, minute; just as long as everyone remembers WHY we do.

Ray,

The UK and commonwealth countries that were once part of he British Empire all celebrate Remembrance day on 11/11 at 11AMwhich does take place on the same date and time of the end of that horrific WWI.

Although the paperwork was not completed (Treaty of Versailles) and formally signed until the following January, the cease fire was more or less the 11/11 date at the eleventh hour (11AM).

Excerpt:

"It went into effect at 11 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918,"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistice_of_11_November_1918

Memorial Day and Remembrance Day are one and the same event, to remember the fallen and decorate their resting place/s.

"Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law restoring the original date to November 11th."

"Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime."

As such Veteran's day is more to thank the living, as Memorial Day her focuses on all who gave all.
