Keep an eye on what your towing

Massive fire burning in Warm Springs, OR due to RVer towing a trailer with a blown tire or lost wheel (or something). This fellow pulled this trailer 6-8 miles across US 26 Wednesday and started several fires along the road. Today the fire is over 55,000 acres!

Hope he has good insurance!

From what I've read in other reports, the driver was aware of the tire/wheel issue, and was trying to haul the trailer to a tire shop some miles away. Apparently he wasn't paying attention to what was going on behind him on the way though.

Summer of 2008 was workamping in northern Michigan and some guy came into the campground with a flat tire on his travel trailer. I told him about the flat tire and he said he knew about it just didn't have a jack to replace it with the spare. Was hoping that after he got set up at the campground someone would have a jack, come over and change the tire for him.

I've seen this sort of thing a few times now. It seems people would rather keep going to a repair shop rather than deal with it themselves, no matter what the outcome.

So let me try and understand. This guy had a blow out, or something, on his trailer and knew it. So rather that pull over and fix it at a minimal cost he some how thinks it's a good idea to wreck the wheel, possibly the axle, and damage the trailer itself. Not to mention that it wasn't even foul weather!

Boy, I sure would like to hear his reasoning on that.

While a TPMS is mandatory with a trailer, a camera on the towed vehicle should also be in use. Things can happen that retain air pressure.

Fully agree. Our TireMinder alarmed due to temperature after a long down hill on the Alcan a couple months ago. I looked at the wheel in question and discovered the axel seal had gone and grease had blasted all over the brakes. The drum was hot but the high air pressure alarm had not (as yet) gone off. This was the second time our TPMS saved our bacon. The other time was with a pressure alarm.

If he knew about it intentionally towed it would / should be liable for the cost of fighting the fire?

Not a blow out, just a flat tire. But yes very interesting. Didn't have a jack and they were only a few miles from the campground, so he pulled it there and like I said he hoped someone at the park would change it for him.

More to the story. My wife and I were the ones who went over and changed the tire out for him. I have a bottle jack in our truck. Got it done. Didn't get a thank you, really appreciate your help, but got could you take it to a repair place and have them patch it for me? I told him he was on his one on that one. For some reason he wasn't very happy with me.
