  1. This just out, and to this, Let the Lawsuits Begin. California is banning any and EVERY pre 2010 truck from their state. Guess it is time to cease purchasing anything from CA make every attempt to stop dealing ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM With CA. California bans 230,000 trucks -- what's next? | Overdrive (overdriveonline.com) Fines will be levied for use of a Pre 2010 machine in the state that emits at a level THEY determine a hazard to someone, anyone. And Does NOT matter if Not Registered in CA, Is REQUIRED the machines are established as set up under CA Regs.
  2. Neighbor that drives OTR Distance cannot enter CA, has to await his loads at AZ or NV border in swap yards. He noted there are allowances unless CA has changed the laws, for Out of State NON Commercial as in RV Licensed machines, cannot use a RV plated truck to haul as a True Semi Truck as are skirting Weight restrictive and fees licensing laws. RV does not pay those fees. You can only tow RV. My KW is registered Truck not RV, will have weight rated plates so I can perform as you note yet is not legal in CA commercially either. Dave
  3. Got that from the Engineer that helped develop it for Cat, he lives out by us currently as he Remote Works. ALL the end results of SCR or DOC is to produce heat by that function of creating N and supposedly 0 from Nitrous oxides, HOWEVER he noted Nitrogen Oxide is the smaller portion leaving Nitrogen Dioxides that do not respond the same, where EPA is pushing now to ADD More crap to reduce that release. The DPF is supposed to collect ALL the particulate from the exhaust stream to be "CONSUMED" which it does not do during Regenerations or when the SCR/DOC is in full cycle. He stated was one of the more serious after effects of After Treatment equipment that DOES NOT function as designed. The ONLY time a SCR/DOC achieves what it was designed to do is at 90% Full HP delivery as he called it 'Duty Cycle'. Cannot achieve the heat required of the action even spraying DEF into the stream so add fuel to generate more heat, self defeating equipment unless on a Generation Station engine or in a truck that is loaded fully greater than 90% of the time. Empty, Bobtailing, light loads and the systems fail to produce desired effect. The term Destroyed or Consumed is used by EPA grunts as to the elimination of the materials in the DPF during a Regen, it CANNOT by laws of materials properties. The current program for Choked DPF units is to exchange them for lab regenerated units, those are cooked in a Natural Gas Fired heat stream to remove the deposited materials from the filtering media. That Ash is then bagged an sent to landfill. He noted CAT regenerates more assemblies in house as regenerations in the field do not work than they ever imagined would. Tier IV is on their offroad machines, he doubts they will ever return to road power for trucks.
  4. This more or less fits here, as to EPA and other as CARB environmental departments getting heavy handed. I just flashed off two letters to my State Senator as to the ineffectiveness and worthlessness of the EPA Mandated devices and equipment on all too many variations on a theme for both Gas and Diesel engines. Primary law of Chemistry, Human cannot Create nor Destroy elemental materials, Can Combine, separate and otherwise reduce to component parts but NOT remove a compound or elemental material in general, this is the primary Lie of the EPA. Catalytic Conversion cannot CHANGE the base material, there is no alchemy applicable, can be compounded to a different end result is about all. This in essence is a Fundamental Physical Law that CANNOT be broken. To which a Selective Catalytic Conversion or DOC unit on a diesel can only change the release, NOT remove it, the base compounds and basic elemental materials will remain intact on exit which is an Emissions release of some type. The devices required today are designed for 90% Engine Duty Cycle at peak hp and torque as in Dynamometer loaded. Placed on a machine frame that equates to fully laden miles 90% of the time which is NOT in any one's imagination practical nor feasible, except to EPA people. Vocational Enterprizes as Rock or materials haulers, local delivery agencies, RV and Personal machine users will NOT EVER achieve greater than 50% duty cycle, EVER. The latter likely not ever 20% duty cycle to effectively purpose those devices currently installed. Thus prominent, Expensive and repetitive failures of Electronic mechanisms will occur. DPF units will choke as do not achieve regenerative heat level, performing routine regenerations do nothing more than consume excess fuel without saturating the mechanism long enough to fulfill that regeneration purpose. DOCs which are the heat creation mechanism cannot achieve the design basis as do not also ever achieve that heat load long enough to perform the function again at a fuel and maintenance expense unduly applied to a low power range use. Diesel Particulate Filters reduce engine efficiency as they choke up, uses more fuel so chokes even faster. As to regen sitting at a fast idle making the SCR/DOC heat to regen that DPF the system is consuming Urea to convert to Ammonia to produce a Catalytic Response of Heat to "Consume" (Which it is NOT) the Particulates in that DPF. In the process it digests them to as small as potentially possible and releases the FINER particulates to atmosphere, It is NOT EVER fully "Consumed". Carbon can only be reduced to its smallest atomic value as a ELEMENTAL Material, or Fine Ash, IE Particulate. Finer particulate is ever more deadly to humans with lung diseases as it penetrates DEEPER into those lungs. Science has Laws that CANNOT be physically Broken, this is one of those. This is what I noted to my Senator. Dave I do not care what anyone has noted to you, mansplained to you as a Engine Company rep, these facts are very basic and economically cumbersome upon those individuals in the aforementioned uses of these machines.
  5. Been a truck mechanic longer than want to remember anymore, at over 200# was not uncommon to walk across a Pete, Freightliner or even as my own KW Hood, built to handle that.
  6. CA Cannot 'Ban' the entry of Personal Diesel Machines, the state has ZERO right to stop visitors and US Citizens from entering. They cease sales of Fuels and likely no one will ever enter that uses a Petroleum engine ever again but then that is their bad luck as Tourism always has been major revenue and will slow to a trickle. Perhaps as Newsum gets a little further along someone will challenge and push his itinerant butt out just for being stupid. As to HDT diesels, as is my own, they can limit time in state, that has been evolving for awhile. Will see where it ends up.
  7. I opted to a Tekonsha no line kinetic, preferred it on my Ford SD 250 as worked exceptionally there and only tie ins for lights, actuation delivery and ignition. Dash cover panel here was destroyed so came in handy.

  10. Not ever heard of a Non-CDL Class A, how many states are presenting that as a option, Missouri is not currently where is either considered Commercial A,B, or just conventional license which does not have Class A or B allowance. Dave
  11. Did get my State License Inspect done and a DOT inspect. ONLY three faults on DOT did not affect license inspect. Steering column u-joints had "Detectable" Play, the lamp for ABS Self check did not light, Bulb IS Bad and a Specialty size, and the MV-3 Dash Push Pull valve did not set at correct level of dumped pressure drop. $350 for MV3 valve(New) bought six bulbs $1.12 ea and two column joints $22ea. Will be here some time next week, then will await a tad warmer than 8F to work on this. License will get bought end of Jan. as 48BL Missouri plates are $700 for a year, Truck titled as a Road Tractor, not RV as want multiple duty of it. Did weigh it at local Quarry, 19340lb. at 1/4 tank fuel, so around 19,500 average weight plus Humans.
  12. Found out fuel sources are Adding BIO to stretch short diesel supplies, attacks many of the older fuel system components that were not rated for it. Notably Cloud point will decay on Blended Bio mixes in cold weather so can actually see it.

  14. Just completed as to finalized the MO State Inspect to get the License for this. Passed flying colors. Have a Decal Shop designing and getting ready to print the information labeling the 48BL License will require. Truck is to be our 5ver toter, sub duties around the farm as a true truck but for the most part our method of moving a toy hauler with our Harley so can enjoy the ride out to remote places we want to see and meet others doing the HDT RV path. I am retired, a 21 year HDT and Eq tech that changed career path in '96 to Power Station worker, that after 20 years was my retirement job as a Nuclear Power Station Plant Operator. Wife and I enjoy tour bike riding, seeing places never been and seeing sights few ever get to. Her retirement is but a few short years away. 2005 Kenworth W900L, 42" flattop bunk. Repairs and upgrades two years in the making. C15 Cat 500hp out of frame overhauled at 440900miles speedo 675000ecm. 18spd Fuller Eaton 46000lb eight bag air ride tandem. 5ver ToyHauler being looked for and reviewing options we can purchase used.

Mr Stough, NOT going to get into a political battle here, Family and literally Dozens of ex co-workers live in TX, OK, CA, GA, IL, LA and work construction trades within or in the actual refinery process systems I spoke of. Not ALL of the US Refinery Fleet of 125(In Service) of the 130 the Energy Department shows actually produce Motor Fuels as Gas or Diesel, many produce Petrochemicals for other industries, further refine Light Ends for consumable gases or heavy oils for lubricants. The Fuel Production Refineries are AT CAPACITY while the US Sells Fuel Oils to Nations that are not always aligned or in many respects Friendly to the US, Argentina, Peru and Brazil come to mind. There are other fuel refining nations, leave those nations fend on their own in open markets and stop BEATING our Own people with high costs of transportation for the goods we use daily. Japan is an Ally as is S Korea, we do not need to support fuels to other nations where DO need to supply our own services FIRST. You wish to make it a Good aspect for the US current admin as opposed to what it really is believe as you wish, sorry though as it is what it really appears as, a beating upon the US Consumer. Current Admin changed EPA allowances that essentially quashed US Refining into Diesel, would need to rebuild at least three of seven shuttered refining facilities but cannot be due to EPA Guidelines to Update and Uprate the systems for environmental discharges which is outside of a ten year financial recovery value. Family has been in the refinery industry as workers or repair staff close to a century. With Brazil, Argentina, Columbia in S Am, and S Korea, Japanl the shipments of US Refined diesel abroad has not diminished but expanded where only two refineries are capable of delivering sweet crude Diesel (Aramco Product) and only three heavy crude (US/Canada oil) refined products out of the nearly two dozen, with many now closed completely, US Refineries. US Deliveries are slowed by the continued pressure to feed the foreign consumers.

  19. According to reliable sources, Current Admin has been allowing shipment of Refined Diesel to S Am nations and S Korea at a reduced rate to overseas costs. Not certain if under a treaty of some sort.

  21. I do not believe the Online Diagnostics became a thing until the later 2012-14 period and there newer. Many makes still do not have that, cost prohibitive and required a Subscription per truck to owners' groups. Volvo dealer anywhere near to you? Other than laying hands to a Laptop at a couple grand plus software as a subscription, with that a few $Benjamins may be a cheaper alternate for now. Dave
  22. Sorry if came across harsh. Ran into this on a 09(Built 09/08) Western Star no Start DD13 engine, was a Central PCM that took signals from Cab Control Modules to start engine, Has four Cab Modules. Had to See Brakes Module, Trans Module, and Ignition Circuit Feed module. HVAC Module did not play during this, the Main PCM then actuates the Engine ECM to start and control that engine. Ended up having a tech from the dealer brought out their test module, swapped and started right up, swapped back and explained would be a few weeks to get a replacement. Sealed in Epoxy so non repairable electronics, also buried alive inside dash area. Dave Had to edit, are Five cabin Modules, the other is Emissions Control that monitors the DEF/DPF systems as get into Tier Four.
  23. With the Multiple PCM Management systems for 2007 and newer trucks, without access to a Diesel Laptop with correct software to access this becomes a big money guessing game. These do not work as Pre'07 machines, they do not respond well to back testing voltages as done on the older machines and cannot use simple test lamp power confirmation tests. I left the industry prior to these type machines becoming prevalent but have kept up with the testing sequence programs, the only alternate way to determine if have lost a PCM is to replace with a dealer test module, only a dealer tech can do that. Freightliner and Volvo group supplied machines (Several side application makes) have upwards of six PCM Modules responding to a central PCM that delivers signals to such as the ECM on the engine delivered to these manufacturers. The main Engine ECM actually starts the engine off a Control Signal from the Cab PCM. Overly technified mechanisms of our future.

Still not licensed or even been inspected, called SHP as to driving to a shop for labeling dimensions, less than 5 miles, trooper said would notify officers a Unlicensed but approved is moving to a service center. Gal that does HDT decals for DOT requirements did the measuring she would need. Not decided on Batt/Tool box lids position or on Sleeper doors for Base Name, City of Origin, Base License weight, S/N. working those ideas and others, going to draw out a few patterns, overlay to a side photo of machine and send them to me email Made up last decals for our old grain box truck. Very satisfying getting it to speed for a number of State Highway Miles. No leaks feels good at controls. Dave
