I five decades in Maine I never heard of chains on trailers. I've used them on a truck when logging in the winter in the woods. Rather than give that as an answer I went looking on the internet. To my surprise I found that CalTrans requires chains on semi-trailers. The only reference to RV's in the the CalTrans documents showing chain use is to Class A and C type RV's. Nevada's chain requirements were clearer. If there are brakes required on the trailer chains are required. So the answer is: Yes, chains can be used on some trailers and are required in some places. BUT, with an RV II would be very careful to insure that there is sufficient clearance in the wheel well and between the wheels of tandem axles of a RV trailer before using chains on the RV trailer. Right. OP was going from Wisconsin to NW lower Michigan. The ferry is an alternate route. Absolutely, although the actual route to the ferry at each end is pretty well marked. I looked it over on Google maps before going, but it wasn't too difficult. The ferry itself is actually a part of US-10. Lots of semi's use it. We crossed on the Manitowoc ferry (SS Badger), twice with the rig and twice without, in the summer of 2019. It is a great trip. The crew moves your RV on and off of the ferry. We had a 5er with a total length of 54'. The cost each way with the rig was $125 for the two of us (one 65+) and $378 for the rig. That saved over 400 miles of driving and a whole lot of Chicago/Gary traffic stress. I can't remember whether there was tax. On the ferry our dog rode in the truck with the window cracked. Make sure to walk the dog just before embarkation. It is a four hour trip. They will also ask about explosives, and will ask about firearms because their bomb dog will sniff our firearms, too. No problem having firearms, you just have to tell them. They don't go into the RV with the dog but it detected my firearms from outside. I suspect they were designed with that in mind. It appears that what was once a 100 year storm is now a 30 year or fewer storm. If we are talking about older used 5ers, don't forget Carriage. They went under in the Great Recession. We bought a 2006 Carri-Lite 36KSQ. We lived in it for a year to figure out what we wanted to change and then had a rebuild done. We still came out way ahead of new on costs and made very few compromises. Another message that the world is moving on. In the summer of 1959 I was 9. My mother, 7 YO brother and I drove 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago and then continued on New Hampshire. We were tent camping and traveled in a Vauxhall Victor (small British station wagon.) We did the reverse trip in August to get back for school. We did the circuit again in 1961 but had learned the lesson of no British car repairs east of LA or west of Philadelphia so traveled in a Impala convertible. Four amazing trips.

We rarely travel more than 300 miles in a day. And we travel more than one day a week or ten days even less frequently. Over the course of the last three years travel has been getting shorter and less frequent. We also agree with north in summer. We will be in Maine August - first week in October.
